What happens if they get separated by a traffic light?
Pretty sure this would only be used on freeways.
If i remember correctly the driver forgot to turn the breaking system on.
No, I'm pretty sure he did just that :v:
No, I'm pretty sure he did just that :v:
No, it was never turned on. I remember reading about it when the video came out. :v: Believe Mercedes Benz did the same thing once, with the same kind of test.
No, it was never turned on.
If i remember correctly the driver forgot to turn the breaking system on.
it can only be attributable to... human error
DID NOBODY ELSE NOTICE HE FUCKING LET GO OF THE WHEEL AND THE CAR DROVE ITSELF HOW IS NOBODY ELSE BLOWN THE FUCK AWAY BY THIS YES I KNOW IT'S MORE OF A CONCEPT BUT HOLY SHIT

Would never use this. As a rule I don't drive behind big trucks, and if I do it's far, far away. They kick up too much shit from the road and throw it back at your car for my tastes.
well theres like 3 cars between you and the truck
would never trust this one second even if it worked perfectly I'd still shit my pants
You'd probably get over it after the first ten times, and be alert but relaxed.
A BMW in a Volvo convoy? (2:20)
Its not just a Volvo convoy. The SARTRE is a project that (if successful) will be implemented in new European cars. Volvo just happens to be the pioneer for this.
I trust a computer to drive a car far more than a human.
Computer is made by humans. WHOOPS human errors in the software/hardware.
Reminds me of. Take them onto the autobahn.
Nürnburgring :v:
Thats a great idea. Give the most stressed and most tired driver on the whole highway the responsibility to fuck shit up.
That would sure be usefull on a highway!
Thats a great idea. Give the most stressed and most tired driver on the whole highway the responsibility to fuck shit up.
Also probably the most experienced.
I can imagine a series of accidents where a child in the backseat does something to the driver because they don't realise the driver is in manual mode (like cover their eyes).
I can imagine a series of accidents where a child in the backseat does something to the driver because they don't realise the driver is in manual mode (like cover their eyes).
I thinking something more drastic like for some reason someone gets the impression that they don't need to wear seatbelts using this.
gonna whack off as i drive now on
Sweet now i can get drunk while my car drives for me
I can imagine a series of accidents where a child in the backseat does something to the driver because they don't realise the driver is in manual mode (like cover their eyes).
If your child is dumb enough to put their hands over the fucking driver of the thing they are in's eyes then they probably don't know that the car drives its self.
What kind of asshole dad is too lazy to drive his kids to the beach
This pretty much screams "crash" A tire in the convoy explodes, whoops cant break fast enough enjoy your chain crash [editline]26th September 2012[/editline] Or a failure where it has to go back to manual mode (e.g loses connection or something) and the driver doesn't notice

Still probably the biggest flaw though (what if the driver is a heavy sleeper and doesn't hear the alarm)

Eject all passengers on disconnect.
What's the point of the request thing? Why would you need to request permission to drive behind someone?
Because you are programming your car to follow them. Thereby putting responsibility into their hands for any reckless driving. If they accept, then they know not to do anything stupid like making any sudden lane changes. It's a safety thing. As for the request to leave the convoy, I'm assuming it communicates with all cars to let them know you're pulling out so they can make the appropriate adjustments safely. It also lets the leader know that there is one less car behind him. I'm sure he will have a similar feature to leave the convoy when he's nearing his destination.

I'm sure they will have thought of these things aswell and will make sure there are counter measures before they release it to the general public.
cool idea, hard to implement.
it's not just an idea http://green.autoblog.com/2012/05/29/volvos-sartre-road-trains-autonomous-cars-go-50-mph-in-spain/
What happens if the truck drives off the road?
I have a feeling this would only work in america. England only has about 40 miles of straight road across the country.
