Oh well, best of luck to you because this wasn't exactly a hard problem.
You did read the thread, didn't you?
my answer is John the Photographer, as it is him who took took the picture, and it's therefore his

Yes, I read it and noticed you got it wrong.
father of this man = Stephen's father's son
Stephen's father's son = Stephen
father of this man = Stephen
this man = Stephen's son
Simple logic. :)
Facepunch demonstrating profound intelligence.
It's obvious. Since Stephen has no brothers or sisters, that means that we can replace "my father's son" with Stephen. So let's do it:
"I don't have any brother or sister, but this man's father is me."
Is it clear now?
Most important sentence in the question:
This man's father is my father's son
So his father's son is the father of the guy in the picture
Repost for my answer. Since the argument is still going on.
READ THE QUESTION PROPERLY.
THE MAN IN THE PHOTOS, FATHER, IS MY FATHERS, SON.
THUS THE MAN IN THE PHOTO IS PERSON A, THE FATHER OF THE PERSON IN THE PHOTO IS PERSON B.
A's father is B's father's, son.
B's father is C.
A's father is C's son. B is C's Son, and B is A's Father
Thus its B who is A's father (A=the person in the photo's father.)
But, the point is not who the father ends up as, but who the picture is of.
B is looking at A, and that's how the chain of conversation starts. B is looking at A, and B is A's father, so if we call B Stephen and A Stephens Son, then Stephen is looking at Stephens Son.
I think i'm right. fuck.
Furthermore.
The 'my fathers son' part obviously is himself as he is an only child.
So rewrite the statement as.
That mans father is me.
So it's his son!
So he goes to the class the next day and asks how to think it through if he couldn't. That's how education works. That's what the teacher is for.
The teacher isn't there to say, "haha you couldn't figure one of the first problems out, I guess my job is done here folks. You are the weakest link! Goodbye!"
Sorry, but everyone who thinks it's anyone other than stephens son is wrong. It's so obvious.
My god who else could it be besides his son. My fathers son (which is him) is this mans father. Which (with on brothers or sisters) is his son. Frankly anyone who thinks differently is an idiot!
[editline]10:13PM[/editline]
Also no one who say that it's a picture of himself has any sort of proof. Everyone saying it's his son has a full list of reasons why.
So if you're looking at yourself in a photo nobody would ask "who are you looking at?" because it's fucking obvious.
It's his son.
It is HIS son.
His fathers son = him.
Theres no one else it could be.
Well done facepunch. Let's all rate OP dumb even though he's right.
Yes, I read it and noticed you got it wrong.
He said it's Stephen's son. He got it right.
No offence but does that mean your mom and your teacher is dumb?
if you switch the places it's really quite easy. my father's son is this mans father.
He's EVERYONE.
No offence but does that mean your mom and your teacher is dumb?
No, they're not dumb. This is a really confusing riddle, and just because they don't understand it doesn't mean they're dumb.
Let's all rate OP dumb even though he's right.
I'm using the boxes to fortify my castle fort. :hist101:
My god, this puzzle is so simple. It's obviously Stephen's son. How did this thread reach 6 pages?
Why does the OP have so many dumbs when he is right?
Your teacher may have said that the answer was himself to make a point. Seeing as it's a critical thinking class, he may want to demonstrate how the students will most likely accept his answer as being correct just because he is 'higher up' than them, which is what critical thinking aims to counter. In your next class he might explain this.
Either that or he's just an idiot and you should quit the class.
Alright guys, status report.
First 30 minutes of class consisted of everyone arguing over this question. Everyone was still torn between "his son" and "himself", but my instructor finally understands the logic between the "his son" answer. However, most people (including my instructor) are convinced that both answers are correct depending on how you perceive the sentence.
I still don't understand the "himself" answer, but oh well, I tried my best to convince them that it's wrong.
It's the sweet lord Jesus Christ

Damn. You should have shown them the logical fallacy that results from the "himself" answer, a couple of people figured it out.
The "himself" answer just plain doesn't make sense. You end up with Stephen = Stephen's son.
And Stephen = Stephen's father.
holy shit, I just realised both of those mean the same thing
what the fuck
It was what stephen saw after ingesting too much illegal substances.
Damn. You should have shown them the logical fallacy that results from the "himself" answer, a couple of people figured it out.
I did, but they didn't buy it. For you and I, it's obvious. But our brains work differently than their's. After a few hours arguing with my mom about it, I didn't feel the need to try and convince them more than twice.
0 = Dad
1 = Grandad
You are the role of the son.
This man's (0) father (1) is my fathers (1) son (0).
