I wonder how they are going to sell this game, it would make a fair amount of sense if they made it f2p considering how many micro-transactions there are in the current KF.
Have we been playing the same game ? because as far as I know, this game does not have micro-transactions (no in-game shop like TF2). I do agree that the current DLC's are a bit too expensive for my likings but they're just visual gimmicks and the weapons hardly change anything.

I don't mind the weapon skins or new character models, however, the new weapons costing something kinda brings an itch to my back. It isn't bad, but it's not really wanted. I rather them release the weapons free and bring a nicer, new looking, aesthetic skin to buy.
They are microtransactions, you pay money to unlock weapons and skins in the game. And some of the weapons do matter, the flare revolver is really good and makes up for some of the firebugs weaknesses, the buzzsaw bow adds a good ranged option for berserkers, and Dr. T's LDS is just a really solid weapon.
And it would just make a lot of sense from a buisness and moral standpoint for them to go free-to-play, co-op games benefit greatly from f2p because customers will more easily get their friends to start playing the game, and because they are so keen on selling gameplay affecting 'dlc' they would dodge a lot of bad press from selling stuff in a multiplayer game that already costs money. Because the thing that people hate more than f2p games is paid games that try to sell micro-transactions.
Actually, from a business standpoint they don't need to go f2p at all. Killing Floor was hugely popular with millions of copies sold in total, and there's already lots of hype built up for KF2 from what I've seen in the last few days. If they simply release it as a full priced game it's already an almost guaranteed success for Tripwire, no need for them to risk it by going f2p. If it turns out to be a great game, people will keep playing it for years, as was (and still is) the case with the original KF.
I totally agree with you about the paid for weapons though, that shit left a bad taste after all the amazing stuff they've done for KF through the years. What made it worse is that straight up paying was the only way to earn those weapons, they could've at least added in a way to unlock them through playing or something. I'm completely fine with microtransactions in a paid for game if the things you can buy only affect your looks though. If they have to go down this way, they should take a page from Valve's book and do something similar to what CS:GO does. Because GO actually barely gets any hate for being a paid for game with microtransactions. In fact, the majority of people love what Valve did with them. The combination of free drops, the market and trading means that they can earn lods of emone from the microtransactions even after people have paid for the actual game, and still keep everyone happy at the same time. Not to mention that the competitive market brings you microtransactions in the truest meaning of the word. What other game out there allows you to get a good looking skin for something like 30 cents?
Anyway, considering that Tripwire are already integrating all their games with Steam, I hope they're at least going to implement the Steam inventory and all the things that come with it if they decide to include microtransactions in KF2.
