Nova Prospekt was my favourite, for so many reasons. You realize how hostile the world has become, Antlions are the main example here, and how simple wildlife can bring a massive military base to it's knees. Also the fact that the prison has dedicated "Land-Sea Intercept Teams" (as labeled by the Overwatch voice) manning a series of MG Bunkers facing the ocean implies there is some unknown sea creature or creatures that pose a significant threat to them, and that it is capable of entering land. I wonder if Valve will ever shine light on what Nova Prospekt's Land-Sea Intercept Teams were watching for, or if even Valve has forgotten these small details. Another is it gives insight to the Combine's inner-workings. You see how they respond to disasters, you hear Overwatch and the unseen Commander relaying orders to the troops, and the surprising lack of internal security aside from a couple companies of soldiers, a battalion max. You see crumbling infrastructure and headcrab infestations in this supposedly high security area, you see escaped prisoners who have succumbed to the headcrabs, and even a couple Soldiers who were killed by hazardous infrastructure and headcrab zombies, problems that went completely ignored. And of course, it's the point where you stop running, and start attacking!
You're overthinking the sea monster, when I hear Land-Sea Intercept, I think ships and boats, theres plenty of unused tug boats that have been shown, some derelict and other still looking like they can operate, It's only safe to assume that the resistance has attempted to assault nova prospect in the past by coming from the sea, and the guns are there to just cover, along with the intercept teams.
Loved it, reminded me of this old gem:
I doubt Valve even remembers they even made the game at this point. They're too deeply buried under the pile of cash Dota2, TF2 and CS:GO has made them.
chill out

The only reason the Resistance is even alive is because the Combine don't care enough to kill them, with the exception of Ravenholm which they shelled because launching artillery takes zero effort. And when Breen feels threatened by Gordon's sudden return, every major Resistance network and outpost is obliterated by sundown (with the exception of Dr. Kleiner, who is well hidden).

Who knows what else made it's way into earth's oceans. Just look at how fucked up and invasive antlions are, I don't think your theory is far fetched at all.
I'd argue that Half Life 2 has visually aged really well in many ways. There's something about the crispness of the textures that I enjoy compared to the glossy-ness at times games like Skyrim have.

How can anything still live in the water when leeches and Ichtyosaurs are present?
Damn, reminds me of years of playing Gmod, long since past.
How can anything still live in the water when leeches and Ichtyosaurs are present?
I think there's a line present in Half-Life 2: Lost Coast where the Fisherman explains that the Leeches have wiped out a majority of life in the ocean. There's also another that explains that seagulls (and presumably people) have started to eat Leeches to keep the population down.
chill out
Didn't HL2's 10th anniversary come and go with Valve not even acknowledging it?

Even today this game still looks like it could be a low-budget FPS. Valve did great work on the graphics all things considered.
