Something that is pretentious is pretty bad, but it's even worse when people misuse the term and just label whatever they don't understand as just dumb.
"something that is pretentious is bad" would mean that all studied music before the 20th century was bad
only ignorant people call an artistic piece shit unironically
Or how about it is my opinion that this 'music' is shit and calling me ignorant for not 'understanding' it is being ignorant yourself
Whatever I'm gonna go listen to dubstep.
irony
that doesnt make sense
Just like 4'33"
"something that is pretentious is bad" would mean that all studied music before the 20th century was bad
What I meant by pretentious was something like Random Access Memories where Daft Punk claimed that it would be groundbreaking and that no electronic artist tries anything different when the album is just some throwback to 80's disco.
Just because something is experimental doesn't mean it's pretentious. It's when you begin to claim that it's the most incredible thing ever and that everything before it doesn't live up to it is when it becomes pretentious.
Just like 4'33"
Wow nice one m8 lmao #owned
I love all music. Classical is the foundation of every genre. I've heard of John Cage and his compositions (and wasn't even aware this was his most famous), but this wasn't a new concept when he devised it. It's got an idea behind it which I get, I just think it's a bit of a waste when I think of why else he composed.

that doesnt mean its bad tho, it would just mean its disappointing when it doesnt live up to its expectations
opera is pretentious as all hell but its still pretty enjoyable
Just like 4'33"
it makes sense to a lot of people so maybe its like a personal thing

I'm not saying your ignorant for not understanding it
I'm saying your ignorant for having the hubris to think that the music is objectively shit music and has no redeeming or respectable aspects about it

agreed experimental != pretentiousness
Claiming your music is the best thing ever in any situation is pretentious even if it is really good music

I meant to point out that an artist calling something that they've made to be mind blowing and everything else before it is shit when it isn't is pretentious, not really something that's just hyped up by people.
I should of said what I originally stated differently I guess because I think you think that I called 4'33 pretentious.
if you dont think this is the shit you have no ears and need to turn them in at your nearest record vendor:

Do you listen to this in the same way you listen to what most people regard as music? That's a genuine question, I'm not trying to be snide

Different genres require different mindsets
People listen to post-rock differently from Jpop, same goes for noise genres as opposed to rhythmic and melodic genres

nah not necessarily, i think some people would call 4'33" pretentious and that was more what i was responding to, using your post as a springboard
i didnt mean for it to sound like an accusation :)
I respect silence when sleeping

well the black dice arouse me so probably not
I actually really enjoyed this piece. Thoroughly engrossed me. I think if you didnt enjoy it you probably just dont "get it"
You're not cultured enough
I remembered searching up hit 70s song on youtube, and I listened to this song where there's electric guitar in the background and this guy talking about driving fast cars for the entire duration.
Can't remember the name anymore.

Just because something is art doesn't mean it's good. Half of modern rap or dubstep is shit, but it's still considered art.

Not that I'd "listen" to it, but it's an interesting concept. The idea behind the piece is where the creativity is in this case.
Lol, are you seriously suggesting music isn't objective
Lol, are you seriously suggesting music isn't objective
yes the only objective thing about music is that daft punk is terrible
[sub][sub]its a joke[/sub][/sub]

Art is all about perspective. Some people love modern rap and dubstep, and some may back them up claiming that they have substantial messages behind them.
The impact of music differs from person to person, and that's literally the entire point of this piece.
By saying it's a piece of shit, you're doing exactly what John Cage was hoping to accomplish.
this discussion is pretty much the point of 4'33 do you guys not get that???
Is this a joke?
Full Orchestral version? Seriously? It's something a sleeping animal, species of your choice, could 'perform'
I wish they'd stop treating it like and calling it Music. It isn't Music
Whatever I'm gonna go listen to dubstep.
dude self-deprecating backpedaling nice display

I regard art as something that invokes emotion in any shape or form and while I think of 4'33 relate-able to modern art museums it's still invoking a huge amount of emotion, anger, passion and other feelings so it's completed its job.
However there has to be a line when it crosses over from different views, something like The Beetles or whatever you regard as your favourite band etc has more talent and more understanding of a medium, and in my eyes deserves more respect than something like this.

okay? nobody ever said you need to respect this guy at all, let alone more than the beetles or w/e your fav band is.
[editline]2nd June 2013[/editline]
tho he was an amazing composer so i think its funny to say the beetles had more understanding of a medium lol
