See this Interview with the Director.
If this movie does get picked up, there will still be mystical shit in it, and I'm fine with that. He also says that he wouldn't want to put Cyrax in this reboot because he was too over the top.
Michael jai White in a fan made video? I dont know...
guess theres not to many original MK fans out there now a days. ive wacthed it three time's all ready i still dont like it. its problem is it's too realistic an explanation for everything i dont like that. i like some unaswered questions
Like most things, this kind of thing is highly opinionated. I've been a fan of Mortal Kombat since the first game was released on home consoles (weren't any arcades where I live), and I love what they're doing with this pilot. You have to think of who a movie is appealing to, and here's a hint: It's not 100% the fans. While you may like some mysticism involved in your stories, Lost has shown, if anything, people hate to have their questions unanswered. The idea of this movie is to make a good movie out of what is honestly a mediocre franchise that has had generally horrible movies (I still love it though <3). He's probably going with realism because it's not only appealing to a wider audience, but also because the magic shit didn't work in the previous movies. Even if they did decide to bring some magic into it, WB probably wouldn't accept it because of how those other movies went.
Welp, that's my opinion on how it all works. I hope that makes you think more about why it's different than what you want to see.
I'm a huge Mortal Kombat fan, and I honestly like what they've done to the story, how they've reimagined the characters. Mortal Kombat's supposed to be this really brutal, gory fighting franchise, and as of late the story and characters have gotten way too goofy.
Plus, Michael Jai White is Jax. What's not to love about that choice. They got fucking Spawn to play Jax, not to mention the guy already has a huge amount of martial arts experience.
This reminds me... somebody I know met the person who played Goro. Or some guy like that.
You have to consider a couple of things:
1. It flashed on the screen for less than a second, you're not exactly meant to see it in detail.
Assuming people wouldn't really look at it isn't an excuse. They still took it without asking, and that's not very nice and also hilariously lazy. Yeah sure they're not making money off it, but it's still not nice (and still very funny) and whats gonna happen if the movie does get made? If they make a subzero based on that or exactly as that, there is gonna be drama now, unless they give a bunch of money to the guy that designed the model. And what if he decides he doesn't want them to use his work? Then there will be even more problems. It's just a dumb move, plain and simple.
2. It wasn't supposed to be leaked online so that people could dissect every image, it was only supposed to be seen by some execs.
Where'd you get hear that from? In all the interviews I've read for it I've never heard them say anything like "We didn't want anyone else to see it". They put a lot of effort into it not to show it to anyone but a few execs. He's trying to get a movie made, of course they were the ones that uploaded it to youtube, what better way to convince a studio to fund you then showing them what the reactions of people are gonna be like.
will turn out like any video game movie

Hahaha wow postal, I didn't figure you for someone who would jump to conclusions like that.
They didn't put any credits anywhere in that short. So I guess now Michael Jai White is gonna want to bitch because he put in so much of his time and effort on that movie and didn't get any credit for it.
Not to mention, you're a fool if you think that this in any way represents an actual full fledged movie with a large budget and set in stone cast. Of course they're not actually going to put that design in the full movie, that would be idiotic for more than one reason.
It was very obviously just something they found that was 'dark and disturbing' that looked sort of like the masks that the MK ninjas wear which they tinted blue to make it look like Sub-Zero. It is simply a placeholder, which is apparently too large of a concept to grasp.

The link was just a couple of posts above you, an interview with the director. http://www.collider.com/2010/06/09/kevin-tancharoen-interview-mortal-kombat-rebirth-feature-film/
Here I'll quote some of the parts so that you don't have to go through the painstaking task of reading it:
You know at first I was just making this to prove to Warner Bros, but then I sent the link to some friends privately for their opinions. All of the sudden it was on some websites.
lol why are you getting so worked up all of the sudden. did you make the short or something? chill
I didn't know they didn't mean for it to appear online. That kinda changes things because then you can get away with changing lots of stuff later without having to worry about confusing everyone. I still stand by my point that's its pretty funny what they did. But yeah you're right it is silly to assume they'd have to go with anything like that in the final film (if it happens), especially if this wasn't mean to be seen by the public.
Also comparing them taking a design from a random guy on a forum to micahel jai white staring in the movie is silly haha. Not having credits is one thing, not telling someone you're using their work is another. But it seems this wasn't meant to be seen by us so it's a non-issue
Is this the movie? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293429/

will be a couple years.
I think if this becomes an actual movie it will be good. I like the concept of reiventing the characters to make them more believable. I don't understand why people get upset at the idea of changing story and charcters. if the copied the exact source material it would not work as a movie (just look at what happened to the origial MK movie). i'm actually a big fan of reinventing things like this. besides making things "realistic" worked for the Dark Knight.
Looks pretty shit to me.
