Yeah, I couldn't figure out how to texture separate parts of the lighter, so I made 2 and attempted to put them together. Pretty good for not doing any modelling in over a year I guess.
[editline]03:30PM[/editline]
And then I need to figure out how to make it all shiny and such.
Started modeling again yesterday, I'm very rusty, but I still got some skills. This is the first thing I made yesterday, please don't crucify me, just made something I thought like doing, very easy, but still, I like it.
Oh, if you see something I should improve, please tell me, as I really want to get back into the game.

Update, made the material glass instead, I think it looks better:

I think it should be a bit more wavy no?
amazing 3D work!
anyone has tutorials about mental ray for maya?
How do I enable HD on my youtube video? I made a little tutorial for AlarinTaylor.
Got it:

I really appreciate that video, but...
:braces-for-dumb-ratings:
I already know how to do that. My problem involves the use of LINES, not shapes. Each straight section on the image I posted is its own line. I cannot boolean lines. I cannon extrude lines. I can extrude and boolean the circles, but not the lines.
Do this:
Go into Max, and draw four separate lines that intersect to form a rectangle. Then attempt to turn only the enclosed area of the rectangle into a plane. This, is partly what I am trying to do.

I know this. All you have to do is make it a closed object. Make more lines and then make it a solid object. Then boolean. Easy as that. Turn on vertex snapping and it'll be easy as hell.

You can't extrude straight lines because they have no volume.
Some shiz I been messing round with.

I'll be making tons of these.
Oh also just made this:

Tried another bump map thing with light:

Oh I also made a title/intro thing for my site, i'll probably make a better one before actually starting work on some production animation:

By the way I started 3d animation again yesterday, I never actually did anything good the last time I attempted it, but this time i'll make a concerted effort to make awesome shiz.

I'm aware of that.

I do have a closed object.... Oh wait, should I add four lines through the circles connecting the four original lines? Also, how do you turn on vertex snapping... Before I just zoomed in as far as it would let me and eyeballed it... :v:
[editline]04:21AM[/editline]
Wait... My circles have only 4 vertices... How am I going to snap to that...

Hide the circles. They don't matter at the moment. It was assumed you would make the 4 lines a closed object before you used boolean. All you have to do is use attach under editable spline and make all of those lines one spline. Then just make more lines that attach the original 4. Then you weld all the vertices and presto. The lines you make to connect them don't matter because the boolean operator will get rid of them anyways. Snapping looks like a magnet in the toolbar. Right click and you can change settings and enable tons of different types of snapping.

Awesome, I'll try that in a bit.
Alright, i got my 3dsMax 2009 working right in Windows 7, but fumeFX can't be installed because it has some trouble with IE8.
Vray is next to have a try, i sure hope that works.

Yep, I had the same problem with IE8 and fume. Delete/uninstall ie and it should work, at least it did for me.

But doesn't windows fuck up if you do that?
But doesn't windows fuck up if you do that?
Yea, I thought windows needed IE...
That's why I've kept it and FF installed.
I've never used fume, despite my desire to try it. How does IE8 mess it up? Does it integrate with IE somehow?
[editline]01:02PM[/editline]
Yea, I thought windows needed IE...

Man I killed that IE shit. It sucks. FYI IE has nothing to do with your internet access. AOL is the only service that takes absolute control of your computer's internet.
When I was on vista, well not me, but whatever, I removed IE and it worked.
Ie fucks up it that way you can't authorize the plugin. It goes connection interrupted or some shit and won't let you choose anything.

Still how to render with mesh and wires on top?
2 separate render passes and then combine in photoshop.
2 separate render passes and then combine in photoshop.
Okay then, how do I render wire only?
This may be more beneficial.
Or just using a fucking composite material. :p
I got it working with vray technique. Thanks a lot.
Or just using a fucking composite material. :p
That was one of the things listed in the PDF :v:

Currently a WIP, I can't texture so I doubt it will ever get finished. It's 707 vertices, I was experimenting with Normal maps
Looks like it has a LOT of smoothing group errors or maybe just general model errors.
Any tips on making and posing a chain? It has almost 100 pieces, would be an ass to do by hand
I think you can copy along a spline. Not sure how though.
Any tips on making and posing a chain? It has almost 100 pieces, would be an ass to do by hand
Make one segment of the chain (basically one torus would do) now copy them 100 times, make a spline, now select all the chain segments and assign a "path track" modifier to them, fuck around with the parameters. :3:
There is no path track modifier. Or I am doing something wrong. All I found is path deform, but it doesn't seem to work like that

Oops, it's actually the pathDeform.
