easiest thing to do, provided you're sure it's a 2:1 ratio, is to simply animate the larger gear rotating 360 degrees in whatever timeframe you want, then in the same timeframe, rotate the smaller one 720. all a simple matter of math. provided your teeth are the same size, and spaced correctly, everything should look good. ...off-topic, what's with these boxes showing up everywhere?

And thanks! Really, though, I want to make it to where something moves up and down to connect with gears lower down. I understand sizes and how they correspond to revolutions, but I'd like to incorporate some kind of piston like movement. The only problem is I'm having trouble finding out how gears can do this. I know I could do it with steam, but I'm trying to keep steam out of the equation. I also want to try at a gear type thing that looks kind of like how steam engine train wheels are linked together and such.
Inverse Kinematics is your friend, in that case. here's a tutorial, click the image! ...or the link http://www.freeitsolutions.com/3ds/viewTutorial.aspx?id=92
I dont see the image WTF now script gives 5 dumbs at a time.

Thanks! I've seen that tutorial before. Picture doesn't work for me, by the way. wippetty wip cream. I'm trying to go for a complex look while trying to keep with simple gears and such.Don't comment on the fact that all the gears are outside of the clock because it's supposed to be that way. [editline]02:03PM[/editline] nevermind it works now
edited post with a link, for future viewers' sakes. also 5 boxes woo! must be moving day.
also 5 boxes woo! must be moving day.
Where are all the packing peanuts?
Why is max rendering my flipped faces? I have a sphere that has flipped faces and it still renders the ones that you shouldn't be able to see.
Why is max rendering my flipped faces? I have a sphere that has flipped faces and it still renders the ones that you shouldn't be able to see.
Screenshots please? Most likely you have turned on "double-sided" or something like that
Screenshots please? Most likely you have turned on "double-sided" or something like that
I don't. It looks correct in a scanline render but in mental ray it's just like this.
I am not sure how mental ray works, but do you use mr specific material?
I'm using a standard material. And 2-sided is unchecked. [editline]04:55PM[/editline] As is force 2-sided
I think you have too choose the physics engine in the reactor toolbar and then click simulate, but I am not sure.
That doesn't work. Does anyone know how I can like simulate tearable PhysX cloth and keyframe it so I can render it as an animation?
That doesn't work. Does anyone know how I can like simulate tearable PhysX cloth and keyframe it so I can render it as an animation?
There was a rewritten maxscript for that, I think on nvidia dev forum
There was a rewritten maxscript for that, I think on nvidia dev forum
-snip- Nevermind, I found it. Thanks :3

I really want to learn 3D modelling, I think I'd be a great 3D artist. I just don't know what program to use... I have some experience with XSI mod tool, made a couple of things in it, but I always hated the interface. I have recently started using Blender but it makes me confused. What program should I learn?
My personal advice would be to get used to Blender, it's a really great tool once you got hang of it.
3ds Max is really good if you ask me, but you have too get it from somewhere *talks too parot on shoulder*
Okay I have a texture that only covers part of my object because it's set to not tile. How can I make it to where the part where the texture isn't covering to have something else? Composite? I can't figure it out.
meh i fail. wewt, dumb rating agree that i fail? oh god, another dumb.
some of you upload these to fpsbanana. It could make an excellent skin

Just practice dude. Sure, it's not amazing at the moment, but, like anything, with practice you could be great.
Yum Cool Wip Added the mario reference cuz SM64 is bitchin'.

xD xD XD xd No gay smilies unless you have an orange avatar. Look up tutorials on lighting, modeling, and texturing. Find a sword tutorial. There's bound to be thousands of them.
My wip. Not sure, to finish it, or not.
My wip. Not sure, to finish it, or not.
I'd like to see it finished. I'm assuming buttons are different objects. are any extrusions/intrusions done by boolean operators or did you do it by hand? Anyone have C&C about mine? [editline]09:33PM[/editline] Dammit. We're one page closer to the end of this thread and the start of v3

We're one page closer to the end of this thread and the start of v3
I only used boolean for 3 holes in the back that can't be seen from this shot. Everything else was cut manually. Yes buttons are different objects. Why would they be the same? :D Also, I need some tips on cutting holes, because right now if I need a lot of holes in one mesh, it fucks up badly. And my poor skill is really limiting me.
