Also be kind to the workers at the airport. They already deal with enough shit and don't need yours.
Also be kind to the workers at the airport. They already deal with enough shit and don't need yours.
this pretty much goes for every job that involves dealing with the public
My aunt's a stewardess so we get to reap some discounts.
this pretty much goes for every job that involves dealing with the public
True, but imagine having 50 passengers (a lot more if mainline, 747's can hold 500 people) who each paid a grand for their ticket standing in front of you enraged because the flight's been cancelled.
I love the feeling of just being in an airport during the early morning. I get this feeling I can't quite describe, but it's awesome.
This. I remember this feeling every time I watch The Terminal.
Airports are really awesome I've considered working at one since the first time I visited one
I love the feeling of just being in an airport during the early morning. I get this feeling I can't quite describe, but it's awesome.
I agree, no idea what's so awesome about it, though. Just have this feeling.
I remember when we at the Delta Hub in Atlanta, Georgia. The sheer size of it was amazing and was really busy.
On the pilot thing...flying would be amazing but it is a LONG road. Ask mscmn. You have to get a license first, then after a shit ton of hours THEN you can apply for the commercial license. You're also going to need a college degree, usually just any will do...don't necessarily need to major in aviation. Of course, if you go to an airline's pilot school all of this is different.
There's only one thing that makes airplanes fly; money. I'm $35,000 in the hole on a federal Direct Plus loan, it's just about the only educational loan you can get that will cover flight training. You really do need to enjoy it to do it. Every instructor I've met so far loves what they do despite their low pay. I'm not sure how many flight hours you need to have logged on every airline, I think American Airlines requires about 10,000 hours minimum if I remember right. The good thing about where I'm going to school (Aerosim Flight Academy, formerly Delta Connection Academy) is that they guarantee an interview with a few regional carriers once you're all finished. I'm still gonna need to log a lot of hours though, I'll probably spend a while as a flight instructor where I'm studying now once I've graduated. It's a lot of studying as a student pilot, most of the weight in my flight bag is books, all I need with me on the plane is my kneeboard, checklists, charts, AFD, headset, and my GATS jar to sample fuel for preflight. All the studying is well worth the flight time though. Once you're up there with flight controls you feel like you're the coolest motherfucker in history. At the moment I'm only working on my private pilot certificate, single engine land and instrument ratings. Once I finish up with that I move on to my commercial certificate and multi-engine rating, etc etc. Right now I'm training in the Cirrus SR20/G. It isn't approved for spins by Cirrus though so I really wanna get into the 172 to do spin recovery. I'll be flying a Piper Seminole for my commercial/multi. Here's a picture I took of my plane for the day right before preflight, last Saturday morning For anyone who is interested in looking into becoming a pilot, feel free to PM me, I'll be more than happy to share my experience so far with it. Also, I found this site to be extremely useful reading before I started flight school: http://thetruthabouttheprofession.weebly.com/some-final-advice-from-me.html
Oh yes, not sure why I didn't touch on that. I don't think most people realize that you pay for every single flight hour. That adds up. I cannot recall the hour specifics from talking with pilots but before applying to a regional airline you do need a portion of your time in multi engines. Even after that it's still a while before you can even attempt to get in a mainline carrier.
That is a sexy picture where is it?
Flying isn't as great as sailing. Something about the open sea that is just magical.
Flying has been a childhood dream of mine. Unfortunately here in the UK it costs more than twice as much to learn to fly than it does in the US, not to mention how much more scarce jobs and opportunities seem to be. My dream is slowly being dissolved away. I would have to be an upper-class posh kid to even consider it :(
I think I'm going to do something like this, thanks for giving me direction OP. I love you.

My flight instructor's been hooking me and a few of his other students up with free sim time though, he gets free personal time to himself with it, and since he doesn't do anything with it he gives us some free instruction sometimes. ExpressJet has 3 awesome simulators at their offices in Houston.
Flying isn't as great as sailing. Something about the open sea that is just magical.
Truth.
When I went to Tenerife (and Amsterdam) I had pints at about 5am at the airport. I think that's the earliest I've ever started drinking.

his point is there is no "The Chicago Airport" he probably means either O'Hare or Midway
akku bar
wow, pretty interesting read thanks for sharing that with us, hah, i want to work at an airport for the benefits and shit now
I feel so home at airports. I don't know why. Would love to work at one.
I had a job at an airport for nine months. I was pushing the lab cart around (poop cart), cleaning out the insides of planes and polishing them. it doesn't matter how freezing it is outside, if a plane had to be dumped (hurr pun), you had to dump the labs. I had to deal with idiots the entire time too. It paid $8 an hour. It was a different experience, sure it didn't pay much but at least you got to work at an airport. Seeing the big planes come in and out, watching them trying to fit it all in the building and watching them take off was amazing.
The Chicago Airport :downs:
If someone says The Chicago Airport in all caps they are clearly referencing O'Hare, stop trying to be clever.
If someone says The Chicago Airport in all caps they are clearly referencing O'Hare, stop trying to be clever.
uh they could easily be talking about Midway that's like say "The Chicago Baseball Team"
woah, nice story. so there are actually some funny jobs out there i didnt know of
That's a cool read. I'm aiming to become an aviation pilot. I dunno where to start from. I guess it's the Physics first. Then I need to build some will to read books about flights.
Even though I'm in the computer industry, I'll certainly try to seek a job at a nearby airport after what I've read.
