Progressive is a very vague umbrella term to be honest.
I see progressive as innovative basically [editline]5th June 2011[/editline] with a touch of technicality
I see progressive as innovative basically [editline]5th June 2011[/editline] with a touch of technincality
Which Deadmau5 isn't really, he's found his ''winning formula'' and stuck to it for a while, but that's really made him unable to innovate. See: the car crash that it 4x4=12
There's a definite argument for a definition between "prog" and "progressive" as I'm sure I've said before
There's a definite argument for a definition between "prog" and "progressive" as I'm sure I've said before
What's the point any more. :smith:
Because people will label bands which aren't progressive as progressive because they share a similar sound to the classic progressive rock bands from the 70s. Hence, "prog", because these bands aren't progressing music in any way, but do share a very prog rock sound. Explained poorly but I think it's there
Ahem: Progressive: although the common belief is that it is music with too many notes, progressive music is actually defined as music which will get you laid less than playing World Of Warcraft would.

I'm not too sure about Deadmau5, is he really the best example of prog house?

I'm speaking mainly about progressive rock, I've never really listened to progressive folk so i don't know if my definition applies. I wouldn't call Deadmau5 progressive house at all. I do think however that in every genre there will be bands aping someone who came before, or just generally not attempting to do as much for example (not that this is a bad thing necessarily) so in my opinion a label such as "prog" is more appropriate. I mean progressive is as much a descriptor as a genre, so having bands which aren't actually progressive being labelled as such seems a bit backward. Some bands are both, some bands are only one, for example, I would consider Haken progressive, and also sharing a sound with the classic prog rock bands, I would consider Andromeda "prog" considering they haven't really deviated from the form put in place by progressive metal bands like Fates Warning, but I would consider Radiohead progressive for inciting something of a musical rethinking, despite not sounding like other "progressive" bands [editline]5th June 2011[/editline] /rant
To make things worse, the guy who's Facebook I found this on claims he likes all music, yet he bashes my taste in music a lot. most people who say they listen to everything are 13 year old girls who really just listen to paramore
all sorts of music = anything on popular radio stations
when I say I like a load of different stuff, all my metalhead friends say 'hurr durr people who say that don't really like any types of music' but I listen to stuff ranging from Black moth super rainbow to Burzum to Lady Gaga to Tyler the creator to Bruce Springsteen to Notorious B.I.G
I hate when people will go "OMG A GOTH!" then do this guitar noise and think theyre funny around theyre mates but when theyre on theyre own and they walk by you they dont say anything.
I really hate people who think a band or a song sucks just because it's "old". :argh:
I don't think anyone above the age of about 15 thinks like this.

My girlfriend tried to make me listen to My Chemical Romance last night, I tried guys I really did. It's just not my bag. I tried to make her listen to the verve, but she really doesn't like them.

as for what progressive means to me, I was always under the impression it was doing something innovative and out there, that people aren't doing. I remember once I was listening to metalcore (christian too, I think) and I was accused of being a satanist. :downs:
