Do they not know anything about Townsend other than his music? The guy himself has actually said "So yeah it's about Ziltoid on a great journey of self discovery, he's the main protagonist HMMM I WONDER WHAT THIS COULD ALL BE A METAPHOR FOR" He said it himself it's about how he was feeling at the time, that he had to set out to prove he could really do solo stuff amongst other things, and the re use of certain riffs links his work together, which again fits with the deeper concept.

When words are used over and over. I listen to post-hardcore a lot, and I hear the word "change" and "you" in almost every single song. It's so annoying hearing that. Every album seems to have a sad song and each of those sad songs aren't about something depressing, they're about the lead singer bitching about some dumb bimbo.
Really low unclean vocals. They're just annoying.
Pig squealing. Kill whoever thought of such a thing.
Pretty much grindcore in general.
