Changes that might make the game better for some people might turn off existing CoD players. Or it may not. It's a risk, and one a company doesn't want to take after building the massive following it has.
yeah but companies need to introduce some risk into their product otherwise it'll be teh suck
it's not as if many earlier FPS games had "tactics" outside of clans, in public games (quake, unreal)

there have always been casual FPS games and they dominate because they are more accessible and easier to jump into and learn, with a higher rate of positive feedback than a game like counter strike

Ahh, that was hardly a big game.
I could cite other smaller games that have been released, but the fact remains that most "blockbuster"(is there an analogous word for games) games aren't set in WW2 anymore.
I'm really less annoyed by COD itself and more annoyed by the stupid trends that it started. I hate bloody screens replacing health bars, I hate the high damage/health ratio, I hate bland color palettes and so called realism, I hate low movement speed when firing, I hate increasingly simplistic level design...
I just generally hate how most modern FPS's baby you. If you like COD that's fine, I don't care that it simply exists, I just care that everyone's trying to copy it.

Am I the only one that likes the regenerating health trend? It makes the game more immersive since you don't have to run around looking for health packs every 5 seconds. If a game can put in great level design, plus regenerating health, I will be a happy camper.

It has it's upsides and downsides. It's nice and works well in CoD but I don't think every shooter needs to copy it.

I find it more immersive to have to search for some way to patch myself up after getting torn to pieces, or having to think more carefully when fighting when i'm injured, rather than just sitting in a corner until my wolverine healing powers put me back to full health.

Well, I think there are certain ways to do it. Mass Effect 2 did it well, and especially 3, where your health would regenerate to the next full bar(so if you had 2.5 bars of health left, it would regen to 3). Also, the way the game is set up, there isn't a lot of time where you can simply sit in a corner and wait for yourself to heal, since you have mass enemies charging at you.
Survival games would probably be better with the traditional health system, since it adds a level of urgency and excitement; trying to avoid monsters and find more health(or the time to patch yourself up).
I don't think it's a catch all for every style of FPS, but I actually really appreciate the idea that health can regenerate instead of being a static number.
Regenerating health works in games like CoD and Battlefield (singleplayer) where it's essentially an on rails, fast paced, cinematic playthrough of setpieces. That said I wouldn't want regenerating health in games like Hitman, or Metal Gear Solid, or certain RPG's. It's a perfectly reasonable design.

That's one of the things Far Cry 2 did a great job in my opinion, segmented regenerative health with a limited number of times you can heal yourself during a mission.

Is FC2 a good game? I've heard it was shit so I never bothered, but if it has a nice health system it can't be too bad, right?

Far Cry 2 is what happens when you spend your entire budget on fire propagation and gunplay.
Shooting feels good and the tech is pretty nice for the time but there is absolutely nothing to do in the game other than shooting people.
This video pretty much hit it square on the head when it mentioned the propaganda and well-camouflaged facade it holds deep down. When a new one of these comes out, people (naturally) won't stop talking about it, even claiming that the game itself compels them to go into military service. I'm all for more people serving our country, but not if it's for the wrong reason. Call of Duty really just needs to take a nice look at what it's become (besides a cash cow bred from war-hungry despots) and just stop for a good long time.
This is just like any other good thing; Great in moderation, shitty in masses.

I wouldn't mind it that much if they did more of a Halo style implementation, but I honestly don't think COD style regen is suited to combat games. It's fine for games like the dinosaur one mentioned in the video, where you want to represent a more immediate threat, but otherwise it just turns a combat game into a shooting gallery.
