Are acoustics any good to muck around on? I may plan on getting one in the future.
They are cool although their volume is very low, you need to amp them up if you are gonna play with other people. Contrabasses are where it's at in the acoustic world for basses, but why do they have to be so damn expensive.

I don't play bass or have a bass, but here is Bootsy Collins talking about the funky bass formula.
2 parts funky + 1 part bass = funky bass
Metallica isn't classic rock. But go for the Squier VM Precision. Or if you want complete tonal control, the Squier Jaguar is best. (Yes I know, I recommend Squiers. But they're good in tone, good quality and good pricing as long as you buy the Vintage Modified or the Classic Vibe series (The latter being more expensive and only available in a few colours.)) Anyway, my stuff: Steiner Acoustic Jumbo [img_thumb]http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s130/nardix/IMG_0021.jpg[/img_thumb] Squier VM Jazz Bass, which I nicknamed Anne. Everything else you named afterwards is classified as classic rock.
I got my bass a few weeks ago, as I wanted to start playing an instrument for a new hobby, I dont know what to start doing on the bass though, all I have is an Ashton Ab-2 bass with no amp or strap :(
Buy an amp?
Might not have the money? I got a mate who has an electric and no amp as he only had enough for the guitar.
I play my electric bass unplugged all the time, it shouldn't be a problem if you are just practicing. As for songs, try bands like Green Day, Sum 41 or Metallica.

My current bass is a cheap 'extreme' strat copy, but I'm getting an upgrade to this.

I played bass clarinet in band class. I didn't like it that much because the reeds pissed me off.
I just noticed I must have cut up my pick guard on my bass from slapping and popping, when my hand comes down, my fingers sometimes slap the pick guard itself, and it's leaving it with gouge marks.. I just got it a week ago :gonk:

Very sexy bass.
Dat bass
I think a bass (and a bass amp, obviously) would probably be my next major music-related purchase. It'll be a while though, my current PC is dying and needs replacing before I can consider getting a bass. I'd probably go for a Hofner Club Contemporary; [IMG]http://www.doctorbass.net/imagftp/Hofner-Club.jpg[/IMG]
Guys I need help. I used to be able to play fast but I'm having trouble keeping up.
Keep practicing with a metronome or a drummer. Eventually you'll be able to play very fast again.

I´m probably getting that for christmas along with a Rumble 30. It sure is sexy as hell, I love natural finishes on guitars and basses.
It is completely worth it...
Have to learn ace of spades, paranoid and run to the hills by tomorrow, both on bass and singing, I have ace of spades on bass done and the singing is allright (I need lyrics in front of me), I just need the work out where everything goes on paranoid (along with lyrics) but run to the hills is causing problems, I can play it, but I can't learn it.

I've been playing bass seriously for a couple years now(I also play tuba and i'm teaching myself to play piano) Currently I play a Schecter stiletto custom 5 string with the natural satin finish. I'm definitely looking into buying a six string sometime soon as well as a fretless. i'm very open to different styles( I'm a progfag at heart) I'm actually going to be majoring in jazz studies/ music education depending on which auditions i pass (I have yet to find out!)
to be honest you really don't need more than a 5 string unless you're playing on your own, with no guitar or anything. even then a 5 string stretches it.
