Anyone know of a good 5 or 6 string fretless acoustic?
5 string is doable, but six?

Oh I was just curious about a six, five is fine
How necessary is it to learn notation, I can read rhythm and I can read tab, but music theory is over complicated when it comes to note reading with key signatures and accidentals and to be honest I can't be bothered to learn all that, and I seam to be doing fine with rhythm and Tab. What do you guys think?
I didn't learn music theory or how to read until I was playing for like 3 1/2 years. As such I am able to improvise and ear-play well. The problem comes when people use the theory to substitute their ear.
Even now that I know decent amount of theory, the reading side is not a skill I use often. I use the actual theory all the time while improvising and writing though.
At least get some basic theory going such as how keys work and what notes are in them and your basic major and minor scales. Your playing will improve for it, I guarantee. You can drop into most music by just asking what key they are in and listening.
Basic theory really isn't that hard, you just need a decent learning resource that explains it well. I went to college to learn music and the teacher I got for the theory was excellent.
It really is just a personal choice, If you can't be bothered then don't there is no rule saying it is a requirement of all musicians. It's just another tool you can use.

you can live without it, but knowing basic theory is a great skill

I know most music theory on bass, my problem is converting that to non-stringed instruments. I know how to read but I can read music like I read notation like I can read words. I can read rhythms well but I just find the way a note can be written confusing. I know my scales and stuff it's just reading and converting to different instruments difficult. If I go out and learn a different instrument then that might help, I'm considering learning the tin whistle and/or Keyboard.
i don't get your problem, music theory is easily applicable to all instruments
i don't get your problem, music theory is easily applicable to all instruments
I mean I can't unconsciously switch between different instruments, It will take me a lot longer than a few of my friends who are proficient at music theory.
Music theory may seem very confusing but once you get into it, you can see how everything fits together like a puzzle and it will eventually all come naturally to you. I've been playing my instruments for only a couple years but I picked up on it fast, do what i did and try getting involved with your school's music program! My band director recruited me to play tuba and since then he has inspired me to join marching band, jazz band, symphonic band, and even music theory class.
It isn't necessary to know notation and theory but trust me it will make you 110% better of a musician if you do.
Is it possible to get a bass amp (that doesn't need to have speakers) and a USB recording lead for less than £75 (it must be half decant)? If not, my budget increases by £25 every month, so how long will it take to get on decent?

Thinking of buying this. y/n
Bumping because i bought my first bass the other day and i'm just wondering if buying a book on learning the instrument would be worth it or if i should just stick to using the internet to learn.

If you have 830 dollars lying around then i'd say go for it.

You should get a teacher, it helps you progress faster in a shorter period of time if you have a good teacher.

I guess thats an option, only i don't know if i'll have enough money to go to a teacher.

Just get a recording interface and an amp simulator.
I keep asking this question in Guitar discussion and never get any answers, I'm getting my second bass amp and I need advice, I want it to be powerful enough to be as loud as a medium guitar practice/small gig amp but I also want to be able to do a range heavy metal sounds and be able to do a bit of recording. My budget is £100 - £200 but I don't mind going a bit over, I was thinking about 100 watts.
Guys, i'm far too poor to afford lessons but i really want to pursue learning bass. Any tips for being self-taught, where do i start? etc.
bass is pretty easy to pick up on, espeically if you've played guitar. i self taught myself both by just looking up lessons/advice etc on the internet. practice practice practice.
my bass, one on the right obviously. lyon washburn, piece of shit, got it from my old band. he stills wants it back but he can go fuck himself.

if i'm not able to fix it up this week (second time sometime i've had to take it to the shop due to something i couldn't fix) i'll just get a new one.
my new amp, fender rumble 75 watt

I myself don't play bass, but my best friend does.
I really want to learn though.

I'm slightly worried about the reaction i'll get from my friends and family because i quit drum lessons after having them for about a year, i'm just assuming they'll expect me to do the same with bass whenever we are not in such a shit financial position and i can afford lessons.
I get no support or encouragement from friends or family, they're all pricks.

Thats what happened to me and guitar, I wanted to learn and ended up with two of them, but I took up ukulele instead and now my mom wants me to put the guitars to good use.
No idea what to do with them.

I will probably end up sticking to books/online even when i can get lessons, most of the music teachers in my school are incredibly patronizing. :v:
I have a pretty crap SX bass, that I never play through an amp cause some of the electronics are broken. But I was given it free by a friend, so I'm not complaining
Take it to a store and see if they can find out what's wrong with it
Or your can inspect it for yourself. What goes on in a guitar really isn't anything complex.
