• Doctor Who V8 -Oswin à bout de souffle

Even if Clara's perfection is a plot device, it doesn't make interesting viewing. Typically, a good character is someone who is either relatable or interesting (i.e. they have some kind of fault in the lives). After 2 episodes, Clara has none of these qualities. She's practically perfect in everyway. Her only faults are that she burnt a souffle and quit her job without giving her employer much notice - that's it. Tension in a story is caused by us rooting for the main character/s when they face somekind of opposition. If we don't care about the character/s, then there is no tension in the story, giving the audience no real reason to care about what is going on. This is sort of negated by The Doctor, who is magical and whatnot, but most importantly flawed. He has incredibly lonely and selfish in recent episodes. Clara is likely to make the Doctor more whole than before the fall of the Ponds, which goes further to highlight the darker sides of the Doctor, with Clara healing them over time. But that doesn't make her interesting herself. She is only interesting in relation with her impact on the Doctor and the mystery surrounding her 2 deaths. Is she an interesting character in and of herself? Not really. She's too perfect. Seriously, tell me where she is either relatable or interesting (i.e. flawed)? She isn't relatable nor interesting if she is comepletely perfect. Also, I'm really trying to like her as character. I really am, because she will be the companion for the 50th Anniversery and I want her character to work in order to make these episodes as good as they can possibily be. But, if she continues to be a Mary-Sue, then it will damage these episodes for sure. I hope her 3rd incarnation isn't a Mary-Sue, otherwise why should I care? OK, rant done. Yell at me if you disagree.
Also Donna is the best post-revival companion, hands down. Except for maybe Wilf.
Is it a coincidence that the two best companions are related? Donna, the super-temp from Chiswick. Unable to hold a job down, kinda loud and scraggy but full of so much heart and compassion. And Wilf, the old war veteran, who runs a newspaper stand during Christmas when everyone else ran away, who was the only one that knew what the "labour camps" really were. And he had so much faith in the Doctor. Quite honestly, I find the Donna arc the most heartbreaking.
I doubt Wilf was the only one who knew what they were, just the only one on screen.

We won't know what *the* Clara will be like until we actually meet her properly. We don't know about her life. Her friends. Her job. I wouldn't worry too much about her being the 50th anniversary companion, either. With a story-arc like this, I expect it will have to be solved by the finale. At which point Moffat would be free to write her out if necessary.
I think we all need to get right down to it and address what is clearly the biggest problem. Moffat, you are not clever when you make a character say "Doctor WHO?" It was dumb and cringeworthy the first time, and it gets worse the more he says it. Seriously, it was said like three times in The Snowmen alone.
what was the first episode this was said in, was it the one with the slitheens?
I just find Oswin like just another pretty companion, it gets boring after a while.

He's smart enough not to let this Clara business interfere with the 50th. I don't think he gets enough credit when it comes to celebrating the show's history.

the only problem with clara is that she's not wilf
I cringed when Clara kissed the doctor. It should have been wilf.

Did anyone else think of Game of Thrones when he said "Winter is coming"?
Just finished watching the episode, loved it so, so much. It was a Doctor Who episode with a sprinkling of Christmas this time round, as opposed to being a Christmas episode with a sprinkling of Doctor Who, like basically all the other Christmas episodes since the first one have been. The [sp]Sherlock-y music when the Doctor was pretending to be Sherlock Holmes[/sp] was brilliant. Actually, that entire scene was brilliant :v:
loved "its smaller on the outside"
We moan when the companion is normal. We moan when they're different. We moan when they're the centre of the universe. We moan when they're boring. We moan when they're flawed. We moan when they're perfect. Ah, Who fans. We only don't moan when they're Wilf. Unless they're not Wilf.
Wilf needs his own spin-off series.
I liked Clara a lot, but I'm not a huge fan of Wilf... Does that mean I'm not a real Who fan? :(

Engrossed in thought? (about Wilf?)

Martha was aight. Donna annoyed the shit out of me right from her shrill, screeching introduction.
