Anybody but Gattis and Chibnall. [editline]9th September 2012[/editline] Actually Gatiss has proven himself as a showrunner on Sherlock. Maybe he'd be better if somebody isn't telling him what to write about.
Who should take over from Moffat whenever he leaves then?
I heard Russell T Davies is a good writer, I'm sure he wouldn't fuck the show up.
To be honest, I didn't care that there wasn't a sense of imminent threat. Obviously the argus filch character was pretty ruthless, but you're right, in the long run. But I'm so sick of the endless amount of episodes where there are these huge consequences for failure, big epic mysteries that could mean the imminent death of the universe if things could go wrong. Season 6 was all about that and while it contained some good individual episodes, it itself was not a good series. To use the analogy of an album, you can either have an album that stands as a great album, or just get a good collection of songs. Season 6 was a good collection of songs, but it was a bad album. For once, I was just super happy to watch this merry gang running around a spaceship causing trouble and getting out safe and fighting dinosaurs and incompetent childish robots and coming out on top. It definitely wouldn't work for every episode in a season. But for this one, it worked well. Also, Matt Smith was on fine form.
Why do Chibnall and Gattis get two? Because the episodes always get a lukewarm to negative reaction.
That's not completely true. I don't think there's much to say this one got a lukewarm to negative reaction, except with all due respect from you. Also didn't the Silurian two parter get a good rap? That was written by Chibnall. The others though, yeah, they weren't great. I think Chris Chibnall has a lot of potential to do a lot better. He writes light hearted episodes and does better steering away from scary stuff. He also seems to have a Silurian hardon? Definitely interested to see where his next episode goes and if it's any good. I agree about Mark Gatiss though. Not a fan of his episodes and yes, they should really give other authors some time to shine if they want to make the show better. I wonder if Moffat's style of having a long story arc makes writers less willing to write episodes because they feel constrained. I know I would.
As a show runner Russell T Davies was incredible. He picked up this ancient tired show, dusted it down and shot it with adrenaline with some great writers and creative peoples. He paid respect to the classic show without impersonating it and created modern television out of what was a in-joke of cult-sci-fi fans. He wasn't an awful writer either, the problem he had was he became too self obsessed. But look what he did in 5 years, reinvented a show and created 2 successful spin offs. His casting was totally unexpected too. I think one of the better Eleventh Doctor stories is the one he wrote for The Sarah Jane Adventures.
It seems to me that Moffat and Davies suffer from the same problem is that they get above themselves with their ambition. It seems odd to me that the three best series out of new Who have definitely, easily been the first series for each respective Doctor. For Davies it was constant cameos fanpleasing in that respect, with Moffat it's these intricate plotlines that get too twisty to follow. I hope he keeps his promise of simplicity this time.
I maintained my optimism from back when we were discussing which episodes would probably be disappointing... and I expected to enjoy each of them. Sure, there were issues. But probably for the first time since 2005, I just sat back and enjoyed it for what it was and I'm more than pleased that the seven-year old in me was entertained. A refreshing change of pace in contrast to Asylum, and a nice reminder that standalone episodes can be fun. Two down, three to go!
I dunno, I always felt that many of the Davies-era episodes (9 and 10) often felt badly written/acted. Don't get me wrong, there were some good stories. But the one with the fat alien who sucked people into his stomach and left their faces sticking out? The entire character of Mickey and his actor's questionable acting? Sometimes it ended up feeling like one of those super low-budget student-written 4.00pm short films that get shown as part of children's afternoon telly
I believe the reboot of the universe made it as if the Bizanthian never crashed, and therefore Amy never had the Angel in her eye.
But the Byzantium still crashed, River comes from the Byzantium when she tells Amy that The Doctor is still alive.

Also I forgot to say, David Mitchell and Robert Webb were great even if the characters weren't to taste, they just pulled it off well. I really wish we could see them in some other role.
Holy shit I can't wait for next weeks episode. I love cyborgs.

Wouldn't the TARDIS still be known as an object from The Timelords though? Erasing all knowledge of The Doctor shouldn't mean all of the knowledge about Timelords becomes erased too..

Moffat has left twitter.
Mercy - SpoilerTV Teaser: “That’s what you said when you left your phone charger in Henry VIII’s suite” There’s another ********* reference ** “Hey you! Bowtie! Get back across that line. Now” “He shoots people’s hats??” “I think the time for subterfuge has past. Good afternoon, my name is ****** ***, and I am the Doctor” “That’s not the plan. He’s not following the plan” “Looking at you Doctor is like looking into a mirror, almost. There’s rage there, like me. Guilt there, like me. Solitude. Everything but the nerve to do what needs to be done!” The Doctor brings a secret weapon to the High Noon Standoff. “Go, just go. I can’t save them while you’re here” “I am a ******** ** ***; I have no role to play during peace” ** it must be Christmas again ; )
Moffat has left twitter.
Only for a bit because he's busy
I just finished watching my marathon of Peep Show over the last week, and it was really nice to hear Mitchell and Webb at their most cynical. I started grinning every time they spoke.
Personally, I couldn't stand Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. It seemed to just be pandering to a much younger audience, and focused way too much on the wacky. I never had a moment where I could genuinely believe that things weren't contrived or idiotic. They need to make Eleven just a little bit more serious rather than complete goofball, otherwise he can't be used very well in serious situations. He handled the brief serious moments of the episode very well, but it was offset by him acting completely wacky for the rest of it. The queen was obnoxious and pointless, but the hunter and Brian were great. To finish off my whiny rant, I must say that I preferred it when the Tardis just kind of teleported from place to place. I know it was because of special effect restrictions, but it just seemed a bit more unique to me.
I just want Wilfred to come back.

Christmas is the new Mr. Saxon
Kept reading Cibnall as Chinball on the last page.
Christmas is the new Mr. Saxon
Christmas is the new cracks is the new missing planets is the new Mr Saxon is the new Torchwood is the new Bad Wolf :v:
Kept reading Cibnall as Chinball on the last page.
Holy shit, I just looked back. it isn't Chinball? That's how I've been reading his name this entire time, thought it was an unfortunate name.
The scanner probably didn't notice the tardis because you know they are designed to be camoflaged and it would be foolish to try and add one to your database.
Christmas is the new Mr. Saxon
reminded me of how much I want John Simm as The Master to come back.
Made my parents watch Doctor Who with me. Ended up they loved every bit of it. My mother loved the Doctor's random, kind of upbeat in the face of danger cheekyness. While my step dad, well, Pond, obviously.
Cultflix Advance Review of A Town Called Mercy: http://cultfix.co.uk/doctor-who-a-town-called-mercy-advance-review-18565.htm?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+DoctorWhoTv+%28Doctor+Who+TV%29 - In terms of the plot, this episode is a very strong one, - The acting in this episode is quite simply, outstanding. - The direction in this episode is superb. I can honestly say that I would buy an 82-inch TV just to watch it. Saul Metzsein has settled into Doctor Who well and he has produced an epic. - I must praise Matt Smith, who once again delved into a much darker side of the character than we are used to. - This episode is pretty much everything you could want out of a western movie, packed into a 45 minute episode Episode Rating: 9/10
