Louis Riel - Canada
He led various Metis resistance movements, the "Red River Rebellion" and "The North-West Rebellion". Rights were not being given to Aboriginals and Metis (European-Aboriginal mixed people) so he fought back.
During the North-West Rebellion he teamed up with Aboriginals (including other badasses such as Big Bear and Poundmaker) to fight off Mounties and volunteers. Most of the time they were heavily outnumbered (6,000 and a gatling gun to 500), but managed to hold off the Canadians for 2 months before being forced to retreat. Louis Riel was sentenced to hanging for treason and Canadians considered him a criminal. His actions later formed the province of Manitoba, and he is today considered a hero for fighting against injustice. He's also my great, great, great, great, great uncle.

As an Australian i'd say he was pretty badass for all the stuff with animals he did but also he kinda deserved what happened to him. Should have a been a crocodile though... make it more ironic but yeah.
