He's right about the Far Cry series in a way. I loved the punishing nature of Far Cry 2, the fact that every decision I made in combat mattered. In Far Cry 3 and 3.5 that feeling has completely vanished, with checkpoints every 2 minutes and AI with the intelligence of a fucking amoeba. (Though even that is pushing it, at least amoebas are able to navigate a maze.)
I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, Far Cry 2 was trying to be punishing, 3 and 4 are just trying to be dumb fun power fantasies and I think they did a pretty good job at it. I would like more singleplayer games like Far Cry 2, but I don't think 3 and 4 were bad for being different to it.
TBH I didn't care for farcry 2 the game was wasn't even that challenging, all the game did was make literally every single thing imaginable beyond tedious as ever, it had a huge amount of things that artificially bloated it, like needing to take medicine or you'll randomly die for no reason, enemies always re spawning in areas meaning you have to do the same thing over and over again, and the weapon rusting system was just asinine. fc2 could have been great but in all honesty, it was boring and repetitive shit
Why do people think games can either be casual or hardcore? Why can't we allow both on those that have reason to appeal to either? Isn't that what difficulty is for? I wish Dark Souls had an Easy Mode so I could just enjoy the game in my own way, admiring the art, and watching the story. I really can't be bothered to learn how to play the game properly, but an Easy Mode wouldn't hurt the games so much would it? "It would hurt the franchise, it would take away the charm" is all flawed argument. People who want to play like it's supposed to, can.
But... it does? :v: It's called summoning phantoms and using the way of blue covenant. you can literally let them play the game for you. Fuck, you could even do a pacifist run this way, nix one boss. The game by design has an easy mode without having a check mark for it.

Like, there are whole areas in Souls games where the primary challenge is that you are 'trespassing' and will be regularly invaded by players who have opted in to 'defending' the area. How in hell would an Easy Mode handle that? Turn off all invasions? Area is now a lifeless husk with absolutely nothing of note in it. Nerf the stats of invaders, or make it so only 'Easy Mode' players can invade other 'Easy Mode' players? You just made it more difficult and frustrating for the 'Easy Mode' players to get the unique loot tied to successfully invading and beating 'trespassers' repeatedly.
Some games just don't make sense with an easy mode. Why should they be broken to support one when it would fundamentally alter the game
I don't get when people say this. I play games to have fun, not to make productive use of my time. Otherwise I most definitely would be doing something else. Learning is just part of the journey, and it's part of the fun (assuming the game is well designed).
That's your thing, but if you enjoy other things besides playing games (reading, sports, .ect), justifying a long gaming session is becomes more difficult. It gets worse once you enter the work force and have a job and have a family to care for. Hard games are great for those willing to throw the time/energy into learning them, but once you end up with deadlines and real world issues, games have sit on the backburner. The rise of more "casual" games has been out of the time constraints of the generation that the industry is targeting. The current adults fresh out of highschool/college grew up with games and are the prime demographic. They want the ones with a disposable income but limited time. Getting little kids and teenagers is just icing on the cake since they don't have disposable income, but they have a lot of time.

There are games that are better suited for short sessions than others, but I don't think learning curve is the factor.
