I've been reading around (like I should have fucking done a week ago...) and it seems that not many people have good things to say about that bass kit thing that I'm getting... This disappoints me... The only other option (I'll have to convince mum to switch, which seems possible, seeing as we haven't actually bought the bass yet) was this Yamaha pack, could anyone here tell me if this one is any good?
Well I have a Bass Similar to that one I have a Yamaha RBX260 The only things i have ahd to replace in the 1 1/2 years i had it is the Nut and the Volume Pot I hate the way it looks, but it sounds great. Though i dont have the whole pack.
I developed a sort of dislike of Rosewood fingerboards. Ebony undoubtedly looks much better.
It sounds different too, keep it mind. So it's not just looks.
Yeah they are custom built, and something like 1.5 grand with a 6 month waiting list, the guy builds em all himself and doesnt trust anyone else to do it without fucking up.
I don't blame him. Ebony is probably worth quarter it's weight in gold. If you were to buy an ebony 4 x 4 with a length of maybe 6 feet, it'd probably cost you around $2000+ He seems to be an ebony-happy sort of guy.
v:v:v Oh and i'm thinking about getting into spalting woods, my mates gonna be doing builds and he's making me an 8 string so i'm thinking about spalting a nice big piece of maple for mine and maybe din some more for the rest of his builds if it goes well, should make it cheaper for him and it's something id like to try and maybe make some money from it. And hypno do you think it would be possible to roughen the surface of a piece of maple and then rub it with ash and then coat it? it's just i thought of that as a possible finish last night and i'd like to try it on a small piece of wood.

I think carbon would probably screw up the lacquer, being that it's not a liquid finish, and is never truly solid like a dried stain, because it's still in a powdered form. Also, I wasn't aware that you could spalt maple yourself. It must take a while to do it, though. I gotta try that.
Oh well thanks man, and yeah there's a guide on the net somewhere, all you have to do is introduce the right fungi to the wood not necessarily maple, and then put it in a big ass plastic bag or container and keep it humid, i think about 30% humidity and it usually takes about 6 months. If you want i could try to find that guide?
I'd like that as well if you can still find it. :)
http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/techline/producing-spalted-wood.pdf There ya go guys, and theres woodweb.com aswell which has alot of information on different techniques, even soaking the wood in beer :v:

I thought of a good solution to bypass my shitty, wet, cold winter. I'll just shove it in my compost. Because of decay, compost is always quite warm, it is aerated, so oxygen can get into the dirt, and it's always dark. Should be ideal for fungal growth. It's probably just damp enough for fungus, but not too wet as to waterlog the wood. Should be ideal, so I'm going to drop a small test piece in today and pull it up in a few weeks. Also, you can make poplar way less ugly by spalting it. It was once thought that the only form of making poplar less ugly was painting it solid, but since it's a pale hardwood, spalting works too :woop:
what im thinking of doing is next spring just getting like a really old bin and just putting a few bits in there, gettin shitake mushrooms (white rot fungus :v:) puttin em in, puttin in other garden waste and shit. Locking it and tarping it, checkin every month and at the same time have another bit just lying around in compost to watch both and see what method works best.

You can cut them off afterward. not sure if mushroom will just grow if you put them in the bin. Actually, after further reading, any leaves or crap you throw in will probably have spores in them already. though it would probably help to get decaying vegetation from an area with maple trees.
Ok i have a decision i have to make on friday, I have narrowed down my guitars to a Used Epiphone Flying V Goth with a Floyd Rose in used coniton, Or i can get a les paul studio plus new (or possibly used) Im really going for the flying v right now but i never owned a floyd rose before and it needs a new 3rd fret, but i really like it Or i can take my second choice with a les paul which is heavy but nice The Flying v is 340 The les paul is 400 I dont want a different guitar and i usurally play distorted and sometimes clean. could you guys help me or give me some advice, thanks for your help. Siminov
find out how much it is to fix the fret try both guitars on your amp and see which you prefer
Ugh, flying V's.. I'd say go for the les paul, I'd like to say it's a matter of opinion, but they are just designed much better than flying V's. Above post is probably more sensible, Even though from a construction standpoint, a les paul is a fantastic guitar, it's still a matter of which sound you prefer.

Granted I absolutely love the Explorer, so yeah...
I'd say the V but I'm fairly indifferent to the looks when you're comparing two of my least favourite shapes. As for the rest, Floyd Roses on cheap guitars are often pretty dodgy, you should make sure it's a good one that has nice tuning stability. Of course you should also see which one sounds best... Randy Rhodes V or King V is where it's at :science:
I have a flying V guitar, and I must say that it sucks. You can't play properly when sitting, you have to hold it in a awkward position that starts hurting your left hand(or right if you're a leftie). The strat-like guitars are the best, they feel nice and you can actually play them while sitting.
I'd definiatly go for the les paul, having played one. The floyd rose will turn out remarkably annoying after the novelty wears off.
Flying V's are much more comfortable playing sitting down since you get that same natural angle you would get standing up. Just put one wing between your thighs. Problem solved. I highly prefer them over traitional shapes. Don't let the whole "hard-to-play-sitting-down"-myth prevent you from getting the coolest guitar ever.

Siminov
Flying V's are really hard to play comfortly when you are sitting. You can play like this but when you play the first frets, you shoulder/hand is not relaxed. It's pretty much meant to be a stage-guitar. Oh yea, if you like to switch tunings, don't buy a floyd rose guitar.
but when you play the first frets, you shoulder/hand is not relaxed.
Bull. Why do you think classical guitar players sit like this? To get better reach and to make picking/plucking easier => Less stress on the arms in general.
Thats the only way to reach the higher frets easily. If Classical guitars didn't have the huge body, they would be played like normal electric guitars. Also, look how much higher/further the first frets are on an electric guitar when you hold it like that. Im not saying its impossible or even much harder, but its hard to get used to it if you've played regular guitars before.
i hate v-shape guitars i find them uncomfortable to play sitting down (like most people) and i just generally don't like the design
.
Chad Kroger has one that's an excellent reason to not buy it.
best looking V I think [editline]07:07PM[/editline] also :v:
Mustaine's Vs eh? Yeah, the double neck looks pretty cool. I personally like the Angel Of Deth art the best. Though many seem to say that Dean produce crap guitars. Any truth to this? And the only bands I know of that played Deans are Megadeth and Pantera.
Well trivium used em until the headstock's cleaved off during alive show, and they won't stop whoring out dimebags fucking name.
ESP Japan you've amazed me again... amazingly sexy shape, and a black paintjob with "andromeda" pearlescent bevels. EPIIIIIC [editline]10:55PM[/editline] 'nother pic of the paint
