Speed limits should at least be increased on the Highway and other larger roads. Highways are purely road vehicles capable of at least 80mph. No obstacles and very very loose curves, make them very safe. Opposite directions have some sort of divider either a concrete block or ditch. A car / truck would have a hard time moving that concrete, and cars at 60 can even go out the other side. Very little if any risk increase for much higher gain.

People will not suddenly keep a farther following distance at higher speeds, and so it will drastically be more dangerous.
Tailgating would cease to exist with no speed limits, because if you're on someone's ass just move over to the lane left of you. If you're in the very left most lane and someone's on your ass then let them pass you. Best case scenario would be on a 4-5 lane freeway where the 2 left most lanes would be considered the fast lanes, where you wouldn't have to worry about being tailgated by someone in a Bugatti.
I'm sorry, but no. That's why there's such stiff penalties for tailgating on the autobahn. If the problem magically went away then they would not have increased the penalties in 2006. Humans are dicks. If there's nothing to deter them from fucking with you, then they will fuck with you. Often with glee. Or are you not familiar with the internet?
No you want to hear something Freking unbelevieable? Read this http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38660951/ns/world_news-europe/?GT1=43001
When everyones going at different speeds the chances of getting into a car accident would be extremely high. And alot of people will go at 90 mph just because they can.
Yeah, I honestly do. People aren't idiots they're not going to go fast if they don't feel safe doing it.
Most people get a rush of adrenaline when doing something dangerous. And it escalates further with others in the car around them because they feel they need to "impress" them.
most accidents involve other drivers so what i propose is, in order to get a license, a mandatory but government funded (that doesn't mean it s free) race training and testing course. this way you have much less accidents because of fewer drivers as well as all drivers actually being able to drive.
good idea
It's like nobody bothers reading the thread at all. All my responses have been me repeating myself. I could probably continue this thread with just quotes of my previous posts. If you want to go 50, stay in the right lane, if you want to go 150, stay in the left. By the time the latter saw the former it wouldn't matter at all because you're 2 lanes apart. Which is a shitty example anyways because what kind of highway/freeway do you drive on where the visibility is 100 ft? Most of the time I'm on it I can see at a quarter of a mile in front of me.
How would that fix the problem? There wouldnt just be two speeds people would stick to. You'd have 1 person going 50, another 60, 70, 80, 100, 150 etc etc. How many lanes do your freeway's have??
People speed up regardless of limits, I'm a sterling example of that. The main cause of car accidents is of course, human error and it's relatives, most of them induced by alcohol, inexperience or a both. The problem is always the driver, people simply don't know how and when to drive fast, how to handle a car in the dirt, the wet or even the tarmac for that matter. That wouldn't be a problem if people behaved and knew their limits, but they don't, and on top of that, add a couple of cuba libres. Driving fast is safe as long as you know what you're doing and leave an appropriate margin for error: Nobody who does would charge into a residential lane at a 100 kph, or start dodging traffic at 140. This is the same discussion as with legalizing drugs, guns, gay marriage, etc. I'm massively pro-freedom and deregulation, but i think speed limits should stay. Germany yay Autobahn hurr yay german autobahn durr :woop:
This would be cool, except a lot of revenue is produced from tickets. They would never get rid of speed limits for this reason.
Speed limits are also in place because of stopping distances. Going faster = stopping takes longer, so you want people to go slower so they have more chance of stopping before they get in an accident/hit someone.
Well seeing as I'm not happy going over 80, I'd stick to that in an unrestricted road (mph)
Just remove speed limits and the problems with idiots will solve itself.
