Here is the full thing where garfield goes apeshit. Taken directly from the official website, from October 23rd to 28th 1989.
This has to be one of the most interesting episodes of the entire series. Not only is it genuinely unsettling to see something as dark as this in a relatively innocent and basic comic, but it's also very interesting to see what Jim Davis thinks of his own character.
There's pictures of Jon Odie and Garfield together in the abandoned house, so could it be that Jon and Odie were in an accident of sorts right around the time the comics became ultra lame, and the rest is just Garfield imagining them?
It would make sense, since they're all productions of Garfield's imagination, it can only make sense that all the characters have the one personality trait Garfield remembers them by (Jon being kind of a social outcast, Odie being stupid, and himself being fat), and never truly develop.
If Jim Davis really did do this on purpose, he's a mastermind.

Well as I said Jim has always hated Garfield. I think he tried for once to give that dumb cat a deeper mentality and came up with that whole episode. It's very interesting when you think about it, and it made perfect sense to a certain extent, up until recently when things have started to move a bit in the comics like Jon actually having a relationship and all.
Always amuses me to see that Davis pretty much took the opportunity of a halloween episode to just spit it out on the character that made him famous. Even if the story is not canon and that Garfield really is just a fat cynical cat with a dumb owner and a dumber dog, it still has a lot of hidden opinions on the series and garfield from Davis himself.
Oh and if this is canon my guess would be that it all started to be a dream when Jon's friend, that one guy with the mustache who originally owned odie, left. In the comics it appears that this guy left and forgot his dog at Jon's place, but given this one comic chances are it's actually everyone who moved out, and Garfield who was abandoned at home as a fat sick cat who could barely move. It would make even more sense that before this point, Garfield had relatively no interactivity with Jon, and it's only after that he started actually talking to him, like Jon could understand him.

Perhaps the elaborate developement of the story like Jon dating that vet is actually a prequel to the accident ?
Perhaps the elaborate developement of the story like Jon dating that vet is actually a prequel to the accident ?
Or maybe it's a new fragment of Garfield's imagination. Nermal was the representation of Garfield's fear of age, and the Vet is the representation of his fear of being forgotten, since Jon pays less and less attention to him and more to the woman he's dating. His own imagination is taking itself apart.
Oh man we are making this whole comic much deeper than it really is.
My take on this is that the whole comic (the abandoned house, garfield being alone) is just a way from Davis to say that he has just completely given up on the comic, and that he is only keeping it up because of publisher pressure and need of money.
That one bunch of following strips where we find out garfield is actually a starving cat in an abandoned house was probably the best part of garfield ever written.
Jim Davis has always hated Garfield. When the comic started it was Jon who was supposed to be the main character and Garfield was just supposed to be his fat cat that helps driving the strips to the punchline. But people liked the cat more than Jon and he became a complete redneck loser. As proven in the Halloween comic where he pretty much just throws Garfield an incredibly shitty situation, Davis would have already ran Garfield to the ground in a more artistic way than just giving him constant bad jokes if he could.
If he hated Garfield and didn't want the comic strip to be about Garfield, he shouldn't have named the comic strip Garfield.
