Try some odd-timing songs, like Vicarious by Tool. Those kind of songs develop your rhythm skills much more than normal songs.
Enter sandman was one of the first songs I learned, still haven't learned the solo though :sigh:
why would you?
its a terrible solo
Learn the riff to Plug in Baby by Muse. Ok to learn, and once you've got it everyone will think you're amazing.
Try Paranoid by Black Sabbath or Hooker with a penis by Tool.
I'd have to say Hyperdrive or Awake! by Devin Townsend.

I would rather be a better playing at songs than being a better blues-scale wanker.

Yes, its like the new stairway to heaven. Must be played when trying out new guitars too.
Note: NO METALLICA. Way over-rated, way overdone, way cliche.
Every cliche Metallica song is bad to learn. Stuff like The Four Horsemen, Motorbreath, Whiplash, Ride The Lightning, Trapped Under Ice, Fight Fire With Fire is all good cause they aren't always talked about when someone refers to Metallica.
Plus Kill 'Em All is awesome, so learn some stuff from that, it's epic.

Who cares if you want to learn well known songs. People should learn whatever they want. Why should anyone be caught up on the premise "is this a cliche song to learn?".

And other people would rather be better improvising. It's just what you'd rather do.
That doesn't make any sense.
That's why you're probably a shitty guitar player.
That's why you're probably a shitty guitar player.
On the contrary, through learning a song you can pick up techniques, through learning via sheet music you could learn about eventually attempting to create your own music, and if neither of those, it's always fun to be able to play your favourite song.

Who rated this dumb

It's a silly comment. In order to agree/disagree one must define exactly what makes a good guitar player. And either way, I do not think learning songs will make you a worse guitar player in any way.
