z32 and what in the fuck is that.
Remember how I said I could get collectors plates on a Geo Tracker now?
The provincial automobile collectors club is butthurt that they might soon have their Corvettes and Deloreans grouped with the same people who also have mint condition Chevy Astros and the Yugos. They're lobbying the provincial automobile insurance agency that on top of the car being in excellent condition, no non-OEM components and a minimum of 25 years old it also must be of specific makes, meaning you could no longer register your K-Car as a collectors vehicle.
PFft. Fuuuuuck you.

If that falls through, you're obligated to roll up to a "classic car" meetup, pop the hood and sit in a lawnchair next to it.
What about ex cop cars. :v:
If you can find a used explorer interceptor, I would buy it. You dont know comfort until you've driven/ridden in one of those. Fuckn luxury compared to vics.

"What the fuck are you talking about, grandpa? This here is a vintage 1992 Geo Tracker. 1.6l inline four cylinder engine with Throttle Body fuel injection. She's not mint but they damn don't make em' like they used to!"
Why are "classic car guys" a bunch of pricks?
Almost anyone over the age of 35 driving a Corvette is almost assuredly not worth talking to, and anyone over the age of 50 is so deep into their own pretend pit of GM shit made of hopes, dreams, and taxpayer money that they don't even have to open their mouth before you know their going to spew nonsense about "parts matching" and "would never modify perfection" blablabla'
Younger folks buying C6s, C7s, etc, hell even C5s don't seem to be as bad. They buy them as fun sports cars and I've seen a lot mod the piss out of them for moar go fast. But good lord you stick a 60 year old man in his C5 and he thinks it's made out of gold when in all reality it's made with the same technology as a 2000 Grand Prix.
I've had a lot of really pleasant chats with "classic car guys", there are definitely bad apples in the bunch but most of them are happy to give you the tour and tell you everything they know about their ride.

I rode in the back of one of those once. it was pretty nice even from the wrong side of the grate

"classic car guys" got the Oregon collector plate laws set to anything 56 and before, they didn't want the 69' everything sullying their precious collector plates. We have a special interest plates but those are nerfed to shit and for 25 y/o or older.
I drive so much that I can usually tell if a crown vic is a popo just by the headlights, in the dark, behind me.
Can generally tell cop cars by their cleanliness, lack of stickers or vanity plates, tint, absolutely no scratches or dents, etc.
The part that gives cops away around here is that usually one of their lowbeams is brighter than the other, and they never ever ever have yellow headlights. So, white headlights, and one side is brighter? I'd bet good money it's a cop.
hey fellas. I just got a quote on a transmission swap and it's way less than I thought so I'm legitimately considering it now. $315 for the swap, +45 to replace clutch, +65 to machine flywheel, +60 to do rear main seal (including the seal itself—everything else, I supply the part). Miata 5 speeds go for 100-300. I don't really need it but boy would I love my car way more if it shifted smoothly from 4th to 3rd.
also 120k is just around the corner so I've got to do the timing belt & water pump then. I have a nice little coolant leak that I've pretty much deduced is coming from where the coolant piping meets the block (can't actually see it because it's surrounded by pulleys), so I want to address too. Should replace the thermostat as well because it seeps.
lots in store for the miata!
what the fuck I got quoted $1200 for a rear main seal replacement on my silverado who the fuck is your mechanic
[editline]31st May 2016[/editline]
and my grandma was going to do a transmission swap on her lexus like 6 years ago and they wanted $6000 for it
It's a 2011, and it's a civilian model. I wouldn't have minded it if they had told me beforehand instead of telling me "the only reason you're failing the inspection is because your rear tires are a little too bald." That's the dick move.
That's really dickish, honestly. And why would they care if your car looks like a police vehicle? Have they seen 3/4 of the taxis in New York and Chicago? They're all ex-cop cars. Hell, even Botetourt County in VA reuses their decent looking mid-2000s Vics with county workers and taxi services.
Do they have a specific clause in their hiring application that specifies which vehicles can't be used? If not I'd call bullshit and challenge the inspection.

right? I thought it was gonna be insane, my dad is like "it's gonna be 2k min"... for the trans at least they say it's a 4 hour job. I've heard good things about these guys before, they're volvo nuts, and back when I was in university they used to let our auto club hold tech days at their shop.
The previous owner did a goober job when doing the rear main on my truck.

So I went in and did a A+ job and replaced the freeze plugs too for giggles.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd it leaks like a fucking sieve. Guess I should have left it alone.
So Pent is looking for a place to live, cuz housing is unaffordable and he'd rather not pay rent the rest of his life. He's been watching this 1976 Ford Vanguard that's been stored up a ravine for the last 15 years or so.

By no means is it in excellent shape. Some of the fixtures and furniture inside are either removed or too badly damaged to be reused. It looks like they stripped out the bathroom and replaced it with an extra place to put a bed. There's also an ultimate redneck mod where they have cut a hole in the side and fit a window air conditioner. Oddly enough the onboard inverter is rated to handle a small AC and there's a junction box next to the vent in the kitchen. :v:

It looks worse than it really is. A bit of work in a woodshop and I'd have the bathroom repartitioned and the table rebuilt in no time.
Other than what sounds like a REALLY bad mouse problem (we could hear them moving around in the ceiling, so that will probably need to come down to be cleaned and restuffed) all the other major components are still there. Plumbing, furnace, water heater, fridge, inverter, all the wiring and the engine. The frame though it has one spot where the outside sheet metal was punctured by a fallen tree is holding its integrity and does not leak.
My only concerns otherwise are the tires are all dead, the engine has not been cranked in year and most important is it runs on propane. Underneath are two large tanks separate from the tank for the furnace/water heater/fridge which the driver can switch between for double the range. The problem is the tags show it was last certified almost 20 years ago so Transport Canada won't let them be used again so they'll have to be replaced. I have never owned or driven a car that ran on Propane. Do most gas stations still offer that?
I'm trying to figure out what kind of a number I should offer. Factoring in the cost for the refurbishment and the cost to have it towed about 25km back home for the work an no additional costs like insurance or engine work I kinda don't want to offer more than $1000 cash. I just can't see it being worth more than that in its current condition. Do you?

What about your collection, Pentium?
As much as I love old RV's, that is gonna be a full time job to repair.
Title. Title. Title.
Pay 600$
Strip the ENTIRE interior. Foam Insulate. Fill with residential based stuff. Stick solar panels on roof. Best thing you can do.
Do not attempt to run a A/C off a inverter. You will drain those poor batts faster than you will cool down the inside.
I would get people who would PAY me to take those things for scrap and I still wouldn't touch them (scrap yards hard to separate the insulation and shit so they dont like them)
Just because its cheap, available, and has potential, doesn't mean you should get it. Hold out for a better deal, or something for $1500+ because you'll be in the area of $1000 in parts minimum to get that thing 100% (tires are the big spender)
What about your collection, Pentium?
Okay, here's the situation.
My parents are more than willing to let me store my collection in the basement so long as I'm actively working towards a place of my own. The market for uncertified techs here is nonexistant because this is a trades town. Where I need to be is on the coast but the cost of living down there is too prohibitive for an unskilled tech who would be making a little over minimum wage in the beginning. I thought that refurbishing a decent size camper into a home would be adequate as I moved myself into a position where I could afford a place of my own. Trust me. The idea of living in an RV was not high on my hopes and dreams as a child.
Turns out however it's not shameful in Vancouver. There is actually a lot of students and 20somethings who live in RV's and remodelled vans and move about. There's usually a dozen or so down in the River District who commute by bike and bus. Pretty much everyone I know on the coast knows at least one person who lives in an RV full-time. That's promising to the morale.

I've had to fucking pass on so many RV's so far because they want stupid money for them. Not even the obvious shit like Airstreams or Winnebago's form the 80's. I'm not fucking paying $4000 for an '88 Prowler truck camper.
Do not attempt to run a A/C off a inverter. You will drain those poor batts faster than you will cool down the inside.
Well obviously. It looked like it was hardwired to the external service panel anyways. I do have five or so nice 24v solar panels hidden away. I'd totes build a permanent roof frame to mount them on and the thing would be pretty much fully charged every evening.
I really gotta talk to the guy again. Like, if he forgot to mention the trans is locked up, the engine is blown or the frame has serious problems, forget it. The tanks aren't that big of an issue as they'd have to be replaced in ten years anyways.
I wouldn't mind living in an RV at all honestly, I'd go all over the country and never leave home
I wouldn't mind living in an RV at all honestly, I'd go all over the country and never leave home
It's honestly not too bad. Personally to be mobile I would rather do a cab over camper instead. Truck seen the end of its life? Take your home off and stick it on another!
For more.... socially accepting camping I'm slowly building up a 7.5x22ft enclosed trailer making the rear drop gate a outdoor cooking / patio all with hardwood floors, residential appliances and hopefully both residential toilet and walk in shower but having issues with the gray / black tanks as a enclosed trailer is not very high off the ground and does not allow for very much clearence.
My personal camper right now is just a 24' deer lease special. I hate it due to its crappiness and non residential appliances and a wet bathroom. Can't even fucking cook a pizza in this tiny ass oven so corndogs it is!
I love my truck camper, even if 90% of its use is a warm place to sleep after getting blasted drunk somewhere without having to drive home or find a ride.

The seatbelt change, seat design, and blackout mode are spectacular. And they have Bluetooth.
I found a completely random dude on Facebook who uses my car as his cover pic:

A bit weird, but also kinda cool I guess
So I've always hated on Chrysler my entire life, for good reason (my family had them).
I've been renting a '15 v6 charger for a month or so, and I think chrysler finally learned how2car. I can't attest to its future reliability, but as a driving experience, they did a pretty good job. Whole car is basically a benz E350. Whole platform is E class and some of the suspension bits are S class.
Pros:
Gigantic, fat barge, but doesn't feel it at all- it's fairly sharp, but understeery.
300hp base engine. It goes fast for 4000+lb (60 in 6.5-7). Faster than most cars in its class (Maxima, Impala
30 mpg on the highway
3.6 VVT motor sounds quite nice, revs out to 7 grand and won't upshift on its own in manual mode.
Engine bay is quite nice looking. It's massive, with a longitudinal v6. Lots of space, looks easy to work on. Radiator coolant storage tank is plastic, with the rad pressure cap on top. Nice that it makes the coolant visible, but eeggghhh 200-300 degree coolant in a plastic resevoir.. nothx.
Manual mode shifts gears a lot faster, feels almost like a DSG.
All of the interior materials are quite nice. Soft rubbers, plastics, and decent pleather. Metal accents are 80% actually metal.
I have the base model, but it has a lot of features (bluetooth, sensors, all power things, touchscreen)
RWDDDDD, great fun in the rain.
Cons:
Because of its weight, doesn't feel very punchy, but it does go fast. 292hp/260lbft.
Speed governor is 119mph. A shame.
ZF 8 speed is nice for economy, but it's a 4 speed with 4 overdrives. Scavenges for low gears on the highway. Dumps it in second at fucking 65 mph. It's pretty slow on downshifting when you hammer it; one time it just flat out didn't know what to do, paused for a good 5 seconds, it tried to rev match, and jerked the whole car violently. I was trying to do a fast overtake and not get rear ended, I had to run back into my lane because of that delay.
Using manual mode is impossible to be quick for fast downshifts, because 8 god damn gears. It's faster to mash the gas in auto and then upshift with manual.
Interior design isn't very appealing. Great infotainment system on the cluster (it has gauges for everything from oil pressure to voltage), and console.
70% of the center console control (hvac, radio) is digital. Do not like.
Driving aids can't be turned off completely unless you get an R/T Scat or Track pack. What the fuck.
Have to pull a fuse if you want to have fun, and even then, the lack of torque doesn't let you spin the tires, and you lose ABS.
For some reason you have to do way too much steering input on the highway under 80 mph. It's tiring and annoying on a car with sub 30k miles. I'm guessing bad toe alignment or too much caster (mercedes have crazy caster and ackermann)
all in all, it's a rather fun cruiser. Sometimes people think you're a cop, which is weird. Also the massive, bright as hell taillight is really useful when backing out at night, or seeing the people behind you in their car at night.
so basically a crown vic with 40 more hp and 4 more gears
Basically. Fuel economy is a bit better. Acceleration MPGs are terrible (5-7 for normal day to day driving), so it averages around 22-24 for me and I drive like I stole it.
I did manage to get around 50 mpg out of it on a flat road going about 45 mph for about half an hour (according to the car, that is). Take that, Prius.
Note to self:
When the lady evaluating you for your class 5 says you were not doing shoulder checks on right turns, it's not entirely recommend you respond with "It's hard to do shoulder checks on right turns when there's a bimbo in the passenger seat."
