Just saw this posted on WSG
I saw he posted an album on /r/cars some days ago too.
So, diagnostics time. Just had my power steering and my power braking turn off on me with no warning for no reason while getting off the interstate today. Went and turned onto the ramp, no problem. Went through the S-turn with power steering, no problem. Applied brake pressure to stop at the stop sign: had brake pressure, but brakes didn't apply. Jammed harder and they barely started to stop. Went to turn to avoid hitting the car in the left lane of the road I was turning onto, and the steering wheel wouldn't turn. Tried applying gas to go through into the median, and it wouldn't rev. I finally forced it straight into the lane and onto the median and restarted my car, and everything was fine.
Where do I begin diagnosing, since both the power brakes and the power steering are two separate systems, aren't they?
First thing I'd do is verify the battery terminals are tight. I experienced this in rush hour Los Angeles traffic a few years ago in my Mazda 3, and it turned out that the terminal was loose, so the car momentarily lost power and reset the power steering and brakes.
Shit like that is the reason I'm not too keen on all-electric assist in cars.
Could also be a short somewhere

Also, I was drifting on sand. Doesn't really take much :v:

I'll stop with the updates now until I'm actually decent :v:
Dad bought a NB last Sunday that he spotted for sale at the Miata Day car show (2 Sundays ago) in Brookline, MA at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum.

Came with 2 car covers, 1 pictured here, racing beat dual tip exhaust, cold air intake, strut tower brace, BFGoodrich Sport Comp 2 summer tires (in 16s, 15s are on back order so I can't get em for my car!), some aftermarket rims, Koni coilovers (or they might be the non-adjustable models, haven't had a good look), some slotted/drilled rotors (unsure on pads), custom AUX port, and only 64k on the clock. 2003 model btw.
It grips real nice, but I'm not a fan of the stiff clutch/soft and vague shifter combo. I don't know if the clutch is stock or not actually. But it's tricky, so I have a lot of trouble getting smooth shifts, especially coming from a stop.

Looks like I might be accompanying my best bro tomorrow on a trip up to Bristol, Vermont. He wants to buy this Volvo V70 R. I don't know much of anything in detail for Volvos, so I'll just be mostly company. All I can do is keep an extra eye out for worn shit. Anyway, any advice on these?

I'm no expert, but I've heard the AWD system in those cars can be really expensive, don't remember what to look for though.
Which car is this again?
2008 Dodge Charger SXT AWD.
Physically turning and braking still worked, so I doubt it's a pedal box sensor or anything weird like that, and my engine revs still ran, it just didn't change, which was weird.

I did find some buying guides and shared them with my friend, so hopefully he will be prepared for whatever decision he makes. It sounds like it might catch him off guard though. He has a habit of searching for unusual and "rare" cars, ones that tend to be beat up and later cost him. It sounds eerily similar to to what I discovered when shopping for 10-15year old Audi and BMWs. I may be able to afford to buy the car, maybe even do some repairs, but maintaining it is near unaffordable!
Ultimately it is his decision, it is a cool car, and I'll get yet another road trip to Vermont out of it.

The PCV system and the Timing Belt are the big things to look for. Make sure those have been redone recently.

what the hell is that cavity
don't bother stacking dimes unless you're welding thin aluminum. it makes for a pretty weld, but not a particularly strong one. go for fillets on steel

I stopped there because something fell :v:
Also it's stainless steel, I'm currently fetching some steel to practice on but ran out of argon...
Anyone have anything to say about a first gen mitsubishi Diamante? Might have a line on one for a daily while I'm still working things out with the Saab.
[editline]1st August 2016[/editline]
Specifically a 94. Don't know the options on it yet but it's in crazy good shape.

well it's a front wheel drive automatic, so not an exciting car, but they are pretty comfortable, fairly reliable, and easy to work on.
The quest to get the toronado went about as expected.

The guy my friend bought it from was a pretty cool guy, he had a couple near mint condition all original hudsons, some old international trucks, and a fucking stunning nomad wagon. We couldnt get the bastardy toronado to turn over, the starter was shot. The guy said it turned over a month ago but hasnt been started since '83. My friend got it for $750. I told him to soak the clyinders with marvel mystery oil until he found a starter. Fingers crossed.
On the way back I missed my turn, so after a quick glance at my phone, I found a gravel road that went where I wanted to go. I turned onto it, and a half mile later, I saw a big hill ahead and a "minimum maintenance" sign. Friend #1 suggested turning around. I told him that wasnt an option as I grabbed another gear and started pouring on the coals. 4 steep rutted dirt hills later, I found the highway, but not before some yelling and pants-shitting by friend #1 who was scared for his pretty new whip, and friend #2, who was letting us use his dad's practically brand new trailer. Sketchy as hell, but very fun.
When the bitching gets tough alwase downshift and floor her.

nah, I upshifted to third and pinned it a few hunderd feet before the hill. Had to reach down into second a couple times on the hills, but for the most part I tried to keep it above 35mph so I wouldnt lose momentum up a hill and start spinning. Must have been scary to see that thing barreling down the path between a couple of cornfields.
With my Charger being fucked, I'm debating on what I should get next.
A 1990 Dodge Daytona ES:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/ZYSr5uO.jpg[/t]
Pros:
Cheap, already have tons of parts for it, retarded easy to work on, and super cheap parts and go fast bits.
Cons:
Old, may need more maintenance, harder and harder to find NOS parts, late 80's tech
Or
2003-2006 SRT-4
[t]http://i.imgur.com/4fSYgib.jpg[/t]
Pros:
More power, modern tech, four doors, Neon parts for days
Cons:
Typically cost at least twice as much as a Daytona for the same quality car, not much experience in modern FWD Mopars, slightly harder to work on.
And I'm not sure if I want an auto (3-speed for Daytona, 4 speed for SRT-4) or manual (Both extremely strong 5-speeds) because I have tons of heavy traffic to and from work. I'm talking like 30 mins of stop and go, and that's me slowly moving forward so I don't have to keep stopping. But dick heads will cut into the open spot ahead of you.
Agree for Daytona or Disagree for Neon?
the daytona is cooler but the srt4 is better. do you want cool or good?
the daytona is cooler but the srt4 is better. do you want cool or good?
I ask myself that question a lot looking at the new mustangs. Like having the 8 cylinders would be cool as hell, but the 4 cyl eco would be more of my style because I dont want to do burnouts

???
Well, I really like both. The only issue is that I have no experience with the Neon. I have a GT Cruiser with the same drive train, but I've only owned it for a week or so now.
The Daytona is dirt cheap to own and build, and is more unique.
I guess it will all come down to price and the circumstance.
If a nice Daytona that looks too good to pass up comes around first, I'll probably go for it. There's always an SRT-4 for sale, usually with tons of really nice bolt ons, but they're always $5K+, while a really nice Daytona is usually $2500 or less. I mean, that's at least $2500 of mods and maintenance, which would destroy the SRT-4 in horsepower and speed.
The Neon does look really tempting. It'd be a good compromise between a Daytona and Charger.

Should have phrased it that I don't need eight cylinders to show off my balls. Or to race people. Or to do burnouts in front of crowds.
I'll take my four cylinder economy sports car with good mileage
I need some help with my car not starting. I know its either the battery or starter. When I was getting gas then started it, it cranked slowly once then started on the second crank. Luckily I got home. A few hours later, I tried to start it. Cranked once then clicks. Figured maybe the alt gave out and the battery was almost dead so I charged it up. Put it back in, one crank then clicks. I'm mostly leaning to a bad battery. Opinions?
Hit a big pothole tonight.
County dug a hole through the tar, refilled it with dirt and rocks.
Dirt and rocks washed away. No markers of any sort.
Hit almost hard enough to bottom out.
States DOT page claims that they will pay for steering components, drivetrain, etc. But not wheels and tires.
They also claim that prior knowledge of the pothole is required - is it enough that the state themselves made the hole and improperly filled it?
Haven't done a thorough inspection. Did measurements, A arm seems to not be bent. The steering feels a bit twitchy to me, and loose.
If I was bent on punishing myself with either a '90 Daytona or an early 2000s Neon I'd probably get the Daytona, really.
