Opinions, bro.
A car's category isn't really an opinion. It's like calling the Mini a sports car. It's a sporty hatchback, not a sports car, like the BMW is a grunty luxury car, but not a performance car.
Seriously though, have you ever thrown a boat like a 740il around an AutoX? It's amazingly fun. I've had the pleasure of racing with dudes who let me take a few laps in their e38's and e39 M5's and you'd be amazed, even bone stock, just how well they perform. You're saying that's NOT a performance vehicle? Even the lesser 740 outperforms most sports cars:
Don’t Tell It That It’s Not a Sports Car Like all 7-series models, the 740i is surprisingly deft for something so large, a supersized 3-series, a feeling enhanced by its lighter nose. Skidpad stick, at 0.88 g, would embarrass most of the Camaros we’ve tested, and a smoking standstill from 70 mph is just 163 feet away. There’s enough room inside to erect a jungle gym (two, if you go for the long wheelbase), and everything is finished to a standard that didn’t exist in the auto industry even a few years ago. It’s a wonderful car, and there is no noticeable sacrifice for going with the smallest engine. The 740i is a car both the owner and his or her conscience will be happy to live with.
[editline]19th February 2016[/editline]
wow got me there
I want to apologize, that was uncalled for. I think it's safe to say that the 5/7 series are luxury oriented performance vehicles that are highly competent for cars of their class. Fair enough?
I'd love to see you take a E38 through an Autocross track.
I jumped my last one and bent a rim :) [editline]19th February 2016[/editline]
Seriously though, have you ever thrown a boat like a 740il around an AutoX? It's just like a bigger 540i Sport. Different rear diff ratio, higher stall speed TC, steptronic shifter, stiffer shocks/springs, lowered with a little bit of rake. Absolutely love the look and feel.

It may have the looks and comforts of a luxury vehicle, but saying it's not a capable of performing like a sports car, even from factory, is just wrong.
Precisely! It may have the looks and comforts of a luxury vehicle, but saying it's not a capable of performing like a sports car, even from factory, is just wrong.
Nobody ever said it was not capable of good performance.
Nobody ever said it was not capable of good performance.
What you said was, "it's not a performance car", when it is. It's a performance luxury car, that's what it's marketed as, and that's what it's capable of. At this point we're getting down to semantics.

So glad we had this conversation on what is and is not a sports/luxury/performance car [editline]19th February 2016[/editline]
Every car is designed with a rear plate in mind, but virtually none are designed with a front plate in mind so it generally looks awful. most fun I've ever had on the autocross was in a 66 catalina wagon with bald tires. second most fun was in a rental elise
Literally giving cops a reason to stop you and being ok with it
True that it's a reason cops can stop me, but the two times I've been confronted about it, it was not the reason I was stopped. I pass cops all day (city where I work has an enormous police presence) but I've come to not really get worried about it. So yes, I'm okay with it.
that's nothing, I don't have any plates and my inspection has been expired since 2011 [editline]19th February 2016[/editline] and my bike doesn't even have a vin plate [editline]19th February 2016[/editline] and my license is suspended since I got busted for street racing
[t]http://i.imgur.com/uSad4DI.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/lNtpu0j.jpg[/t] Got new coils, they make my engine look real pritty I let it run for a half hour or so, but cant find any coolant leaks. I guess im gonna drive it for a while and keep checking I went up to my dads shop to cut and bend up a floorpan and i couldnt pass up drooling over this cool ass plane. [t]http://i.imgur.com/uaMXqbY.jpg[/t]
Cessna Skymaster. I'm currently (slowly) working on my pilot's license because if this big pending deal goes through my dad is going to buy one of these as the company plane and I'll be the pilot. They're pretty awesome because if you lose an engine (or just want to be fairly economical) you can fly with no major torque issues on a single motor, unlike any other twin-engine configuration.
Yeah, id like to get a pilots liscense, if the hours on end of renting a plane for training didnt cost as much as a small house.
Spotted this old girl today. YJ Wrangler in what looked like pretty good condition. Neat. [t]http://i.imgur.com/oDxnzEs.jpg[/t]
Hngggg. Gimme. [t]http://i.imgur.com/gLB7X3G.jpg[/t] You can see the Ford Raptor that replaced it after 44 years of service. Jesus Christ, since that was his only car for 44 years, he's got to have racked up at least 500k miles. It must be nice knowing that you picked a car 40 years ago that's held its value.
Every car is designed with a rear plate in mind, but virtually none are designed with a front plate in mind so it generally looks awful. My state requires front plates but fuck that—write the ticket.
Likewise... my daily gets a plate, but drilling holes in the NSX bumper would be like drilling holes into the skull of your newborn baby. There's an old guy around the area that brings his 00's Mustang to shows and doesn't have a rear plate mounted.. he puts it in the rear window. As the story goes somehow he got the car brand new *without* holes drilled into the rear for mounting a rear plate. How that happened, I don't know. But he's old and we're rural, so when a cop pulls him over he says "officer, where am I supposed to mount the plate? There's no holes to mount it with, and I certainly am not going to drill any in this car." I don't know how old people get away with it just because they're old :v:
Uhhhhh, because it's a BMW and it's meant to be driven like one? You'd be absolutely amazed at how well a manual transmission transforms the feel of the car. I'm talking 3-5 second improvements at the AutoX with a manual over an auto, especially with the slushbox that came in that generation. To me, a BMW is a performance vehicle, not a luxury car, it's an extremely competent machine that should be driven like one. Plus, those 7-series make absolutely drift missiles due to their long wheelbase and tail happy rear end.
Heck, even Jackpody would agree with that. In older Mercedes S-Class sedans (which you can get in a stick), they feel much more agile and responsive when you row your own instead of it shifting for you.
I am totally going to go to autocross with my New Yorker. Will probably need some new tires doubt tech will be very impressed by 40 year old tires.
Didn't someone here autocross a big Chrysler boat?
It snow'd [t]http://puu.sh/nePMO.jpg[/t]
Every car is designed with a rear plate in mind, but virtually none are designed with a front plate in mind so it generally looks awful. As such, they look fine over here but with US plates they look odd. Same with rear plates a lot of the time I think.
Didn't someone here autocross a big Chrysler boat?
I want to but its not road worthy yet .Changing master cylinder and finishing off carb and intake swap today.
Someone else actually did autox theirs though. I just can't remember their name. :v: [editline]20th February 2016[/editline] They did a bunch of suspension work and put big meaty tires on it and it was way cooler than it had any right

Never even been pulled over once for it. The local cops here even had the audacity to say they always pull over front plateless cars because they might be stolen to a buddy of mine after his car was stolen. Only because supposedly the reason they threw the front plate in the trunk was because they didn't want cops to run the front plate.
my bad
that seat is running right on the edge
that seat is running right on the edge
He he was from a lower class participating at the same race. (1 race , multiple classes) I just wanted to simply pass him on the inside. But then I fucked up, it was the first time EVER I raced in the rain (I haven't even practised in the rain before that. To make matters worse I was on slicks :suicide:
Got my carb intake and new distributor on. the air cleaner barely fits on now. Gonna go back out in a few minutes and change my coil and plug wires.
Shit, this carbon fiber hardtop is really turning in to a completely emotion-based purchase and venture....some used side latches and softtop window seals fetched about $200. At the last minute while at the atm, my dad and I decided we should just use the softtop windshield latches that we already have with the car and save $200. Next step is get the damn lexan window installed...hell, might be talked in to making it a DIY job the way my dad and the used dealer I got the car/parts from try and persuade me. I just really don't wanna fuck it up. Installing latches and seals is one thing, installing a window is another. But isn't the biggest cost in window installs the window itself? In researching other people's experiences with similar lexan windows, they had very affordable installs done. One guy even claimed his window guy did it for $40! Also, I'm eyeing these Dunlop Direzza DZ102s since they are on the cheaps, are a performance summer tire, and should in theory produce a noticeable improvement in handling while also making for a great daily driving tire. Am I right in this thinking here? I'm thinking of getting extra rims, especially since I'm pretty sure I can't mount those on the OEM 14"s anyway. I'm aiming for those famed OEM BBS rims, as the Miata dealer guys have a set or two, although at least one set is being [del]repaired[/del] refurbished I should say, so I'm not jumping the gun yet.
