I got a little inspiration from that video you posted last year when you where on the Autobahn with your E28 520i, and my brother who has a 525e. So I bought my own 520i for about $800 back in early January. My god the car I bought has been unloved, I'm slowly fixing it to make a daily driver. It's painted the classic Silver colour for the E28's (although faded and mostly gone). It is an early 1983 model with about 370,000 km all black dash board and navy blue interior, and a 5 speed manual!

Second time shooting paint, first time shooting basecoat/clearcoat. The taillights turned out perfect, the bumper has one spot where it ran when I shot the clearcoat, but I still need to get used to setting the gun up properly. Otherwise its a good 5-footer as I only wet sanded with 400 then 1000 grit over the old paint, primer would have gotten rid of the small rock chips but its just a truck anyways.
Also, fuckin' bees just loved to crawl all over it like it was some big flower. Dead center a bee waddled along for about 4 inches but it'll be plastered with their guts soon enough >:)

The paint is too nice, I'll have to polish the rest of the truck haha!
[editline]21st March 2016[/editline]
I might try and paint another tailgate for it tomorrow. After that the truck just needs new wheels and it'd be a pretty decent looking rig!

Ship those to the west coast, I could sell those for 4-5k over here easyyyy.
Having a six cylinder engine is a big plus. But BMW's four cylinder engines are still made by BMW and they know how to make engines be good. And the rest of the car is also still a BMW.

4 cylinder bmws are excruciatingly slow though. fine for an old lady's car but I'm young and reckless

Both are POS
So I am looking to get a decent used car for under 6,000 within the next year, that won't shit out on me. I know it's a vague ask, but what are any of your recommendations?
Any advice in general is very much welcomed.
A 1960's Dodge Dart, and $4,000 worth of whatever engine and drivetrain you want.

Then make a stupid decision like every young people do and and LS1 swap it

Cash for clunkers destroyed the used car market in the US and to a lesser extent Canada.

Exactly what I had a dream about last night. Would put to use my spare 5.3 that I was gonna throw in my truck when my 350 throws a rod or plows a valve into the piston.
Unless you do something to that 350, you'd be waiting a long time.

Cash for Clunkers? Mind explaining?
Take your old car to a dealership and trade it in for usually more than its actually worth, then the government destroys it.
Cash for Clunkers? Mind explaining?
A government program a few years back that was supposed to be to get gas guzzlers off the roads, but really was just a handout to struggling auto makers during the financial crisis.
You'd trade in your old car for a discount on a new vehicle, and then the old car's engine was destroyed. Two ways of doing that were draining the oil and running it until it seized, or pouring sand into the intake until it seized.

It was.
My family and I benefitted from it greatly so lol Got rid of our old ass vehicles for $2k

I had a dream the other night that I was driving for a real long time in a car that I found unrecognizable - something weird. ANyway, it was raining and I wound up at Clutch2's work. He worked in a warehouse stripping cars legally for the cops and selling the parts on ebay. He was also half bear. Not like bear parts, but like literally half his body was that of a bear, including face - think 2face. I pleaded with him to repaint my car and install a stereo but he couldn't because the cops would get him in trouble. No matter how much I asked or how much money I offered him he just wouldn't do it for fear of getting in trouble. It turned out he went to jail for crashing his NSX into a bear exhibit at the zoo, and as punishment the judge turned him into half a bear and he had to strip cars for the State. The police told me to get lost.
So I went to Clutch's house and convinced him he could paint the car in his garage. But he said he couldn't because he had to use a special robot hand and only had that at work.
SO basically I didn't get my car painted, or new stereo installed because Clutch2 was a scaredy cat.
I really did have that dream.
Man, what a wimp lol. :v:
Although aside from me not wanting to take on more work I'd say that dream is a pretty accurate portrayal of reality!
Hey guys, I don't know if this is the appropriate place, but I know it's existed for a while. Was driving home earlier, and half way through, my engine got like, twice as loud. I gave it a few revs when I got home, and it's now much deeper, slightly muffled sounding. I've done a bit of research online, most people think it's going to be the exhaust system, perhaps a hole or something. Maybe you guys would be able to confirm this by the sound.

Holy shit, that is awesome! Please feel free to share any photos or videos with me :v:, or any 520i-specific questions. And respect for bringing an unloved example back up to speed!
Ah who remembers the picture of me standing on the NSX engine shoulders deep behind the rear of it from last fall? Anyone? Either way I know I remember, because it sucked.
All for a tiny little allen key plug that was leaking out. I tried tightening it, and that didn't fix the oil seepage.
So today I had a free hour or so and went out to the garage to try again. This was the first time I'd pulled the cover off since last November.. oh man I can't wait to drive it again.
It was 100% as horrible to do again this time as last time. Except this time I removed it, cleaned the threads, put sealant on them, threaded it back in, and tightened it. Nowhere near as easy at it sounds. It's high up there on the "This is so fucking fiddly what am I doing with my life?" scale. If this doesn't fix the little oil leak I'm going to off myself or crash it into a cage full of bears.
That Isuzu Vehicross is back on sale. For some reason it's back at the price it started at last time, $12000, rather than the price it disappeared with, $5500.
[sp]I have half a mind to ask for it for 2500, just to get my foot in the door if no one buys it ever :v:[/sp]

Thanks for taking interest. The Beemer as a 'few' issues, a blown clutch master and slave, buggered tyres, front shocks are gone, putting it in gear moving the lever around is about the same when in neutral (bushes) and new vacuum lines are required. Also the whole exhaust system is leaky (gaskets) and the muffler is rusted out, she still runs on leaded fuel.
It hasnt been to hard of a car to work on, im just waiting for major parts, the clutch master for the RHD cars is difficult and expensive to get. The M20 motor starts and runs! but could run better with new vacuum lines, from driving it up and down the street with out a clutch the gearbox shifts very well!
There is one part I'd like to chase up from you and thats a shift lever boot, do you have any spare?

Take a old rag, go to the back of the car and do this
[t]http://i.imgur.com/GdTF1BR.jpg[/t]
If you can hear "shh" noises while doing this, that means the exhaust gases are escaping from a rust hole. But if your car turns off = Your exhaust system isnt leaking
if it's a small leak you can look for black soot around the hole to find it
!!Rambling potential project babbling alert!!
Things are looking up for the business and we haven't sold the Cruiser yet, so I was thinking of asking to spend the money from that on getting a roller chassis and a drivetrain for it.
What kind of feasibility troubles would I run into stuffing a relatively modern midsized some-cylinder engine into a 193x-195x car of some sort? I know it's a vague question. I guess I'm asking how hard would it be to take a 1940ish car of some sort (there's actually a huge selection of reasonably priced rollers around here) and drop a reasonably reliable powerplant in it, maybe only about 200 horsepower so a GM 350 or something in it. As long as the sump clears the frame rails and there's room in the transmission tunnel, it should be doable relatively easily, right?
I mean off the top of the Craigslist in the under $1000 asking range for alleged mostly complete rollers there's a Desoto 4-door, a Hudson Commadore, a Nash Rambler Classic, a Ford Falcon, a 47 Chevy, a '60 Merc 190, a '40 GMC dump truck, a '49 Willis Wagon, a '57 Jeep, a Pontiac Star Chief, a Volvo PV 544, a Stude Pickup, a Packard DeLuxe, and more!
I was even thinking of doing something really out there and putting a Honda or Toyota 4-pot in one. Are there any RWD solutions for those, Hondayota guys? I mean presumably I'd need the whole drivetrain except for possibly the rear end, so what's the cheapest solution for that? We're expecting to get about 3-4 grand out of the Cruiser (yes, really) so a thousand bucks for the roller leaves a modest amount for the drivetrain, since I'd need brakes and probably suspension. I'd budget a thousand bucks for the drivetrain, really. I'm not expecting to make any kind of speed monster, just a semi-driveable uniquity that I can cruise around in.
Can I get some advice on those honda/toyota motors in particular from you guys? Preferably something that's relatively self-contained and can make about 200hp N/A or with a tiny turbo. Other suggestions for power are welcome, except LS's and Chevy V6's (every engine swap project around here has a Chevy V6 in it), but I like the idea of putting a buzzy 4-pot in a big lump of old steel.

I have yet to hear of someone failing to fit a 350 into anything.
Guys, I've fallen in love.

Someone got a Brera sprayed in Ferrari red.
I really want to find a 4WD Brera as a project car now. Drop a 3.7L Busso engine in it and get it looking like that. One day......
