What did you use to paint it?
I painted it using some cheap-ish paint gun my dad had, and I used some alkyd paint called bengalakk.
Did you use some thinner or something for spraying? I've got a gun but always figured the paint would be too thick for it.
Yeah, we used about 30% white spirit. Drying time was a fucking bitch though, because the paint is still thick as fuck.

Swear words
I dunno if this is the place to ask, but my older friend has a 97' VW jetta TDI but it's having some issues and I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions or has had a similar issue. The engine will run when idle, but when you accelerate it dies. Also the alarm is now starting to go off when the battery is reconnected, although I suspect that might have to do with connecting the battery without the keys in the ignition or something of the sort, but I'm not sure atm if he tried that. Like I said he's an older man so it's a relatively new car for him.

Read out the error codes regarding the engine and post them, though check the airfilter and the service book for when the fuel filter were last replaced.
My eclipse's radio died :( I guess it cooked to death, probably the same heatwave that shattered the dashboard.

MK3s always do that when you reconnect the battery, or at least every one I've ever worked on.
On the 1.9 TDIs the cat/DPF are prone to clogging and causing the car to buck/die when you try to accelerate. I remember when we did the exhaust on my friend's 98 TDI (which was bucking and not wanting to accelerate) the DPF must have weighed 30lbs it had so much soot in it. 2.5" turbo-back exhaust fixed everything. Still, check with a VAG-COM first to make sure it's not something more simple.
Ladies and gentlemen, my 40 dollar paint job is complete. Would be around 120 if I didn't have the equipment already though.
Seems like the engine handled the loss of oil too.

Why didn't you paint match the bumpers?
Why didn't you paint match the bumpers?
Primering unpainted plastic bumpers is hell IMO, which is why new bumpers are pretty much all sold pre-primered.
And I guess he were going for the sorta two-tone black & white look.

i agree 100%.
You can't go into any store and find good plastic primer. I tried using regular primer, it was worse than no primer at all.
I did some work on my truck, 99% sure it's the water pump leaking.
Started restoring more of the interior, fixed an A/C duct, installed new visors.
Hard part now is replicating the diesel startup decal.
you got a picture of the decal? I might be able to make a vinyl of it or something?

I like VAG.
The computer tells you everything, trust in the computer. Install computer in your computer makes telling your engine/trans to "shut the fuck up with your errors and work properly".
Also TB learning, key learning, and needle sweep is fun too.
Oil leak on NSX confirmed fixed.. jacked it up tonight to check and the allen plug is dry!
Also ordered a bunch of dumb crap,
New battery for the motorcycle, and LED light kit for it.
Bubble shift knob for the Corollabortion and an RGB LED to light it up
Some amber and and white LED strips to light up some little portions of the NSX.
Can't wait!
Faceplates are slightly larger than the DIN standard I think, but your new stereo should come with a plastic ring to make up for that difference.
Ah, I see...is that ring for example part of this stuff that crutchfield wants to package with the receiver for a relatively big amount of $$?
[t]http://puu.sh/ofbg6.png[/t]
I was down with letting crutchfield hold my hand and stop bothering this thread until this showed up. I had thought I basically buy security keys, buy the receiver, re-plug all the wires like you're building a computer, and voila.

No it's not...
You spray it with a light coat of plastic primer, and then paint it like normal. There's nothing special about painting plastic other than the primer you use is specifically for plastic.

The ring is something that comes with the stereo.
To cage mount what you'll do first is load the cage into the hole you leave from removing the old stereo;

The little tabs on there are to bend outwards in about 4 spots to 'lock' the cage in so it doesn't just slide right back out.
Next up you'll have your radio, now in this picture note the trim ring that goes around the main face;

That's the trim ring in question, and is included with whatever stereo you buy. The dimensions of that ring will fit perfectly into the hole left from the old stereo on your VW. Carefully tuck all wiring and etc into the cavity behind the stereo (it's very tight on VWs) and slide the radio into the cage until it clicks and then it's locked in!
Finished product will be along the lines of;

What year Passat is it? And some point they become tricky in the form of not having an ACC 12v wire in the harness anymore, I can let you know if you'll run into that on yours.
Also, is it the Monsoon premium audio in there, or is it the base model audio?
I wish someone would just produce a less blingy radio that looks like it could be oem
I wish someone would just produce a less blingy radio that looks like it could be oem
OEM-style radio with Bluetooth, USB, Aux, and handsfree. Is that too much to ask?
I remember there was a company that made radios specifically like that, but I can't remember the name...
you got a picture of the decal? I might be able to make a vinyl of it or something?
I don't have a picture just yet, I can't find any pictures of it online.
The decal has a decent amount of details. It has a graph, a lot of writing, a font that I can't find.
I thought of actually manually recreating it, but I can't find any fonts that have the exact same characters.
Ideally, it would be vinyl. It was originally some sort of sticky paper with a laminate applied over it.
I tried copying with a scanner - since it didn't fit directly on the glass, it didn't work.
I'll likely try taking a picture with my fiances Canon t3i next.
Its 12:06 AM Tuesday morning and I've already worked 27 hours this week and I'm still at work

The ring should be included with the stereo. Every stereo I've installed has come with every I needed to install it, but since you're stateside you'll have to get wiring for your car.
Who here has instagram? Looking to follow some other car guys!
@brawnham is mine!
So.... I gotta use the Beetle for the next few days no matter how the weather turns out.
The insurance company that I've got my Merc insured in has fucked up the last bill which was supposed to be automatically paid, the ones before this last one was, and now I suddenly don't have insurance on it anymore since it hasn't been paid. I called them and asked and they said "oh it's been some technical problems with the last bill" and shit like that. Now I got a huge bill to pay and no insurance, so for the next few days it would be illegal to drive on the road. They said that when I've paid the bill I can call them and they'll "reevaluate" my ability to have the car insured and if they will give me a new insurance contract on it. I don't see why I'll have to get "reevaluated" for that when it's not my fault that the bill was never paid, it's the automatic system that fucked up.
There you go.

It's a 2001 and yeah it has Monsoon. I think the tradeoff to getting the car in gold back then is that it came with I think every optional additional feature.
So the cage is what the radio is already mounted in?

ikr
the Clarion I'm looking at though seems to be the best budget not-japanese-robot head unit.

it's still pretty Japanese robot, just less glossy
