Sweet hatchback bro.
Guys, I just had the fucking coolest thing happen to me.
I went to the Dodge dealership so I could get my foglights activated on my 2012 Challenger SXT, and I had to wait for about an hour. So I went and looked at other cars that they had in their showroom and I saw this guy waiting in there:

A fucking Hellcat.
One of the people there moved the car to the end of the room so they could do some work on a wall, so it could be out of the way. I asked one of the people there if I could sit in it, and hey told me "sure, that's why it's here!" and I was just blown away by how much dodge put into this car. People were taking pictures of it and whatnot and I asked them if I could have it as my birthday gift, since it is my birthday. They told me no, but they said I could drive it back over to the parking space. I was so moist when I turned it on... the whole fucking room was shaking. The clutch was actually really nice on it. A lot shorter than I thought... overall, it was a fantastic birthday. Probably be the only time I'll ever get to drive one of those things.
Wait, you have to take it to a dealership to activate the foglights? What the shit?
Wait, you have to take it to a dealership to activate the foglights? What the shit?
Same deal with modern Ford's and VW's (In my experience).
But in VW's defense, VCDS is cheap and easy to get compared to other manufacturers software suites, although FoCom is also relatively cheap.
I wonder what kind of performance enhancements you can do to a Smartcar...

That sounds like baby back bullshit to me, what is the advantage of that over just making them work out of the box?
That sounds like baby back bullshit to me, what is the advantage of that over just making them work out of the box?
It is kindof bullshit. It might be because of the different dash icons that pop on when the lights are engaged... I have no idea. My idea, and I'm probably wrong, was because of the whole auto bailout thing that happened. Forcing you to take your vehicle to the dealership probably brings in more money to the company. I was thinking about somehow wiring them directly in the headlight lines, but apparently you could blow a fuse or something. I have no idea.
That sounds like baby back bullshit to me, what is the advantage of that over just making them work out of the box?
It'll throw faults if it's activated, but the lights are not mounted/present.
Still kindof bullshit there isn't a standardized and open standards to enable/disable non-security or non-emissions related equipment (trust me, it'll never happen if emissions or safety were included)
Sounds to me like another way to get you into the dealership so they can tell you your muffler belts are worn and it's time for your mandatory 500 mile technician-approved oil change.
Sounds to me like another way to get you into the dealership so they can tell you your muffler belts are worn and it's time for your mandatory 500 mile technician-approved oil change.
All the places I've been often do it for free or for chump change, but that's because the mechanics there thinks it's bullshit too, especially if the customer did all the rest of the work and only needs a option flipped in the "ecu".
Only ones they apply a substantial fee to, are asshole customers.
guys I'm looking for a mechanic to look over a car I want to buy tomorrow
--
place A: $69, "we'd look over the car like we're buying it for ourselves," road test, no compression test (car's a 97 so he said it would throw a code for low compression)
place B: FREE, "we'd measure the tires, brakes, check for leaks, check/read any codes," no compression test, takes 30 minutes
--
is this true about OBDII knowing about low compression, how much better could A really be than B, and who would you go with (assuming you're like me and not a car genius)?
OBD2a doesn't know shit. Unless it's having a heartattack and something is just about to fail, it's not going to show signs of anything that's mechanical aside from mechanical timing. I suppose if you were extremely familiar with a platform you could check out the o2 output and various other timing information with it but unless you're a tuner who is very familiar with the stock ecu and that platforms characteristics it's not going to mean one damn thing.
Hitting it with a code scanner, doing a compression test and a overall inspection is the best you can do. I'm also a fan of starting the engine while completely cold with the radiator cap off to check for a blown headgasket but I've only bought shitty cars for the most part.

Hellcats are really cool, but they have some inherent flaws that'd make me take a Viper any day.
idk the viper is kinda $20,000 more
I've been doing an apprenticeship type thing at my local mechanic and it's been really cool so far. I've already learned a ton about simple maintenance on cars and I got to drive a 2008 Tesla Roadster today. Pulls pretty hard for a car making 200 lb-ft of torque. It does weigh 2700 pounds though. It was a bitch to get in and out of.
Well the car I was scheduled to look at tomorrow sold today.
IIRC, you guys are fans of gently owned, high-mileage vehicles? Thinking about this one now: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/cto/5544229771.html

Ugh, can't stand this guy. I mean he really doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. Especially the part where he was talking about the intake for the supercharger isn't really a headlight, but a clear lens. Completely false. Look at any picture of a hellcat with the lights turned on, and what do you get? I just can't take him seriously. I much prefer criticism video from Mr. Regular because he's actually pretty knowledgeable and he's actually funny.
Wait what? The supercharger intake is the actual ram scoop. Open the hood, there's hoses running from the shaker to the intake box.

Where are you at? I'll do it for $50.
So here's how my week went.
On tuesday, i went to the club meeting and all that stuff and talked to the guy i bought the yellow cat from. We're chums and he was doing well, talking about going out to look at even more british cars to buy, all that stuff. Said he was going to the club cruise on saturday and how everything was great.
And on thursday, he died.
So being the new custodian of Hobbes, come saturday i ended up being the center of attention, and decided to run black flags on the car for him

Some people thought it was a little macabre, others thought it was just right, i thought it was the right thing to do.
Also did a little group shot with the car under a cherry(?) tree with the pedals everywhere. It'd be a bit impolite to post the group shot but i got some nice photos of it
[T]https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/t31.0-8/12973199_936249906474053_2958476984287053367_o.jpg[/T]
Not to get all existential in a vroom vroom thread but still. On tuesday he was happy and laughing, eager to expand his car collection again, on thursday he was arbitrarily dead. Although given the choice between that and rotting to death in an old folks home, i'd prefer the former, it's still something that caught me offguard. C'est la vie.
[sp]not really thematically related, but that burgundy jaguar next to mine was the 15th to last XJ ever built, and mine was one of the first year for the series 3. I thought that was kind of cool[/sp]
That's the way they go a lot of times. A couple acquaintances passed away last year in the same manner. One day you get up to walk out the door and you fall over cold from a heart attack, or your car goes over the center line and takes a Cobalt head on. It's weird. Good on ya for doing a little something in his memory. That's all we leave behind, in the end.
In WI here I've been far too busy to have a heart attack or any of those things. The weather hit 80 the last couple days so boom all of a sudden work's busy cuz people are OK with leaving the house now. I've been putting a few miles on the NSX and daaaaaaaaaamn near got backed into at a gas station parking lot. I was waiting for a truck to pull out to take his spot and I turned around and saw backup lights coming straight for me.. I yelled and honked and pulled forward as fast as I could and somehow didn't get hit. Idk how, it looked like the NSX was doomed. Some guy who was standing outside smoking a cigarette saw it and was yelling at the guy and he pulled away.. lol. He said it was really close.
The Audi I'm prepping for paint has turned into a massive job, par for the course I guess. I've got most of the rust removal done.. so the car has a bunch of square holes cut in it, lol. Still need to remove half a rocket panel. I want to take pics but every time I work on it it's after dark and all I have is a dark driveway and an LED portable light which I use until the battery dies, which means it's quitting time. I ordered 2 new fenders.. because they were cheaper than bothering with cutting/welding the 2 rotted ones.
We're going all the way with this one now.. instead of a liquid wrap we decided that after all that metal work we're going to do full paint, jambs and all. Tonight was a teardown night, pulling all the interior A/B/C pillar trim, kick panels, door panels, etc. Since the car has to sit outside I need to leave it "water tight" and things like weather stripping will get pulled right when I jamb it. I'm still deciding if I want to pull door handles.. The way they are they don't present any hard edges if I shoot with them on the car. I pulled one and it wasn't the best time I've ever had.

But I digress, that's a lot of words. The next 2 days I have off, and the next 2 days it's going to rain. Some days I question the decision of buying the NSX instead of a house :v: Hell, even a freakin car tent would be better than nothing at this point. I guess it's more fun this way??? It builds character. When I get my own work space it's going to be like a vacation. Maybe I can at least sneak some pics in daylight.
It'll throw faults if it's activated, but the lights are not mounted/present
That's just complete bullshit. My saab has the wiring for the fog lights, but not the switch or lights, and it's activated. You know how Saab solved it? They didn't put a relay in.

As far as Miatas, if you toss in another grand you can get twice as nice of a car at the least.

Also, there's a 9,350 mile S2000 on Craigslist over here too. AP2 markup is insane but it is basically a brand new car.

My budget does not involve tossing in another grand. That said, the more I look at this Miata, the more I think it's overpriced for what it is. I may still check it out tomorrow since it's super local though.

That's unfortunate, if you can afford to wait I'd really hold out for sure then. I'd say it's over priced but I've seen cars in better shape at 200k miles than a 100k mile car, can't ever hurt to look.
I wonder what kind of performance enhancements you can do to a Smartcar...
People take out the tiny 3-cylinder from the ForTwo/Roadster and replace it with an engine from a Hayabusa. They're called 'Smartukis'.

There was a few in the movie "Knight and Day", that terrible romcom/spy movie.

You cannot forget the Brabus versions of the smart cars either. The most extreme one they did was weld two 3cylinder engines together to make a v6 (with two turbos) and put it in the back of a Roadster.

Before anyone asks, yes I do like these cars unironically.
The fact that they're rear/mid engined and rwd is neat.
That's just complete bullshit. My saab has the wiring for the fog lights, but not the switch or lights, and it's activated. You know how Saab solved it? They didn't put a relay in.
On modern cars it's all transistors or mosfets instead of relays except for few things, those ain't socketed.
So the wiring in your saab is old-fashioned.
In some modern cars, the electrical box can even set the voltage to headlight bulbs independently of the rest of the system, I know the newest Golf can that since I raised the voltage to them for a customer who valued brightness higher than not changing bulbs every month.
The future is here.
