• Music? Is this generation making shit music, or are people not looking hard enough?
I think music is more about a profit these days and thats why its so shitty.
Music has always been driven by profits. Dating back to the old classical composers even.
The main problem is people not sharing good music.
Is the reason for this is that people are embaressed or?
People are not looking hard enough at all, and the people that do are usually called hipsters and hated for it. Look at stuff like St. Vincent, she's been doing amazing stuff and is surfacing around here, at least with the music crowd. The Dutch and Belgians here probably know Spinvis too, he has amazing lyrics and is actually a composer. The problem is that people have become lazy, you've got to hand them the music on a silver platter or else they aren't even going to listen to it, sometimes you even have to persuade them to actually give something new a listen.
It's a generation thing, for the most part. Same thing goes for TV shows. We grow up to a certain standard of music and TV, and the next generation to another. We don't like theirs because we don't feel familiar too it. A majority of parents don't like the music us 16-year olds listen to because it's not what they listened to, and same goes for TV shows. Another thing is that there have always been bad musicians. These generations aren't any different.
Technicality vs Emotion We can look at how we enjoy music in different ways. Sometimes we can enjoy the music based on technicality higher than actual musicianship. For example, Steely Dan have made some records with some of the best production I've ever heard. Each sound that they record, is polished to perfection in its delivery for the final cut. Therefore when I put on a Steely Dan record, I enjoy the sound more than the emotion. However... If I'm listening to a Nick Drake record, fidelity doesn't come to me, it's his personality.
Over time, I think it's mostly become easier and easier to churn out simple songs that don't have a whole lot to them other than a catchy melody and generic harmony that everybody can identify with because their brain doesn't have to work to decipher it [editline]17th January 2012[/editline] On the other end of the scale though, there are people who are pushing harmonic boundaries (eg. Scott Walker) and creating entirely fresh and original styles of music
12-bar blues says hi.
There were a lot of artists that would merely use the 12-bar blues as a launchpad, or a mere framework into creating far more intricate progressions, or as a basis for expressive and soulful solos
i dont hear grindcore or screamo on the radio ever and those are the only genres of music comprised completely of utter shit so no i think we're ok
The main problem is people not sharing good music.
This is very true. The weird thing about music is that people get weirdly hostile over it. Music genres have expanded in number enough to create more distance between each of them. It's to a point now where it's difficult to share music without a vast number of people disliking the music and calling each other names, so a lot of people would rather just keep it to themselves rather than reach out to others and risk being insulted over it. That said, my opinion is that yeah, music has taken quite a dive, but mostly in the mainstream, especially the stuff you hear on the radio, if any of it is actually new anymore (seriously, if I hear Smells Like Teen Spirit one more damn time ...). A lot of the good stuff I find, is the stuff you aren't going to hear on the radio anymore, which is why more people need to stop worrying so much about the name calling and just try to share what they do find. That goes for the people complaining that all music sucks now, too. Honestly, I had that mindset quite a few years back myself, and I'll happily admit I was wrong. While I still don't have any favorite bands to speak of, there's plenty of songs that are quite good in my opinion.

It seems clear you hate anything noisy, so why not move on and stop moaning. [editline]17th January 2012[/editline]
This is very true. It's so blatantly obvious that they're prejudice, but denial will only make you more so. I'm not saying I'm without prejudice, I have a few.. but at least I'll own up to them without shame.

I really think genres are starting to have less and less meaning in the terms of applying one to a band. Take In Flames, most people class them as melodic death metal, yet they currently record albums with a huge alternative feel to them.
It's to a point now where it's difficult to share music without a vast number of people disliking the music and calling each other names.
I think it should be a rule in the music section to not make fun of other people's tastes. A ban-able offense it should be.

The music section isnt that bad though there are a few regulars who do it frequently. Back to topic / The guy is right I think post 270 ish about metal/core/ heavier than lets say mastodon not being played on the radio. Hell I have to wait till like 12 at night on a friday if im to get any harsh metal music played on the local FM one just happens to be Kerrang which is mediocre at best.
I'd say that musical quality has deteriorated overall because there is far more advanced technology for vocal and instrumental adjustment, meaning that anyone that wail in tune can sound like Susan Boyle. therefore meaning that music has now become, to most people, a means to an end(Money) whereas originally it was just about the art and the enjoyment from it.

Never has there been a period in time where the majority of music is made for the money.

How many different users in this thread compared to the number of people in the music thread. There's a clear vibe that people are being driven away by some kind of intimidation. :(

This is more the overall picture of music quality.
It still is about the art and enjoyment from it.
Music section is usually discussion about bands themselves. This is more the overall picture of music quality.
Nah, you're misunderstanding my point. It's clear people are interested, but haven't the confidence to be open due to the few who will put them down.
Nah, you're misunderstanding my point.
Nah, you're misunderstanding my point. It's clear people are interested, but haven't the confidence to be open due to the few who will put them down.
I am one of them. I want to post in the music section sometimes, but darn.. When you guys compared your music taste to my taste it was so awfully low it's insane. Whenever I look at the thread, you guy listen to completely different music that I listen to and if I posted my music album grid or something people would probably rate me dumb and tell me that I listen to shit music. To me there is no shit music, it's all about your opinion. Some will find it shit, some will love it.
I am ashamed to point you towards pop music, Seriously, It's all about the bucks even if the stars don't realize that the records are playing them for the bux
Oh sure, they get used as corporate tools (justin bieber lol) but a lot of those artists make the music because they like it. Take Gaga or Adele or Kanye West. It just so happens to be the music they enjoy making is what the mainstream part of society enjoys as well and big companies have taken advantage of it and commercialised it. Imagine if metal was pop and pop was metal. Everyone would complain metal was a commercialised bunch of bullshit.
I am ashamed to point you towards pop music, Seriously, It's all about the bucks even if the stars don't realize that the records are playing them for the bux
The majority of music. I guarantee you that there are a shitload more regular nonprofit bands out there than the popular cash cow ones. Whether or not they have exposure is irrelevant, they still exist.

My taste used to by abysmally low with most people there too. It's super or very high and its more expansive now because of most people there. You just have to realise what you're interested in right now and try get recommendations off people to try it.
I am one of them. I want to post in the music section sometimes, but darn.. It's the regulars who are supposed to help others feel welcome. Why should someone have to force their way in.
I apologize on their behalf. People should welcome all tastes and characters. It's the regulars who are supposed to help others feel welcome. Why should someone have to force their way in.
Spreadin' the message. What ever happened to your "listen to more soul" tirades?
Right, stick around, you ask people to recommend you stuff.
What if someone wants to talk? [editline]17th January 2012[/editline]
Spreadin' the message. What ever happened to your "listen to more soul" tirades?
I'll start it again once people stop talking about me in the gold members forum.
What if someone wants to talk?
Oh just chat? That too. But I always felt the overlying point of that section was to expand your tastes. Because that's what happened to me and I feel happy that I have lots of different music.
Meh, expanding tastes is too vague. I don't really care for that much any more. But that's me personally, if people want to discover different sounds then I'm all for it. It's mostly about personality for me, at the moment.
