Music? Is this generation making shit music, or are people not looking hard enough?

I like today's music for the most part.
Just because some people don't like it doesn't make it shit.
This entire thread can be answered by its own question.
People aren't looking hard enough.

music has become really bad recently because i heard a song on the radio and it wasnt to my death metal tastes
I think the music has turned into the shittiest state yet.
why? as someone who has explored music far and wide i'd be more than able to say that there's more possibilities of things to do in modern day for music. there's a lot more creativity flowing around, too.

Don't bother replying tbh.
If one person isn't interested in discovering new things, there's nothing we can do.
You can find something that fits your needs if you look hard enough. Just because a genre is popular and you don't like it doesn't make this entire generation shit.
Pretty obvious, really. I even found this guy named Parov Stelar or something, never heard of him before but he has some amazing music done and in a pretty creative way. I kind of like his music and listen to it daily, but I also like a few mainstream artists. It's kind of spread around the table.

Who is this Parov Stelar?

An artist who uses very vintage-like jazz samples and then mixes them into a tad more modern way. I think it's an interesting way of combining the present and the past into a working mixture. Here's a sample in case you're interested.

Nice, very interesting textures.

See, I found this just by looking around. It's something completely new so music in itself isn't dying, but popularity and fame of certain genres is. Just because they're not always in the spotlights doesn't mean they're dead.

The best way to find music. Use your instincts.
Mainstream is mainstream for a reason: it's catchy. It doesn't mean that it's excellent by any means. It's what the majority enjoys at that given time.
Chances are, your tastes are different if you don't like 'pop' music. There's plenty of awesome music out there, but it just takes a bit of searching.
I'm a fanboy for Ronald Jenkees, no record label deals, doesn't care if you pirate his music.
He just wants to make music.

It really depends where you look.
FOSTER THE PEOPLE
I have over 250 songs on my ipod most of which were released within the past 10 years. I'm not sure how you can say the music (of any time period for that matter) is bad.
You think everything in the 60s-90s used to be stuff like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, and whatnot? Those were only the very few good bands that survived amongst the otherwise horrible crapload of shit that was being released at that time. People are experimenting with relatively new forms of music today just like how bands were experimenting back then (you think everyone liked rock when it first came out?) It's pretty closed minded to say that the entire music industry sucks in this generation.

You haven't got a clue what you're talking about.
If anything, nowadays we are more aware of good artists (or at least can be). In the old days, you had to rely on the record store, the radio and your friends for your music. If you didn't like what they had, well, tough shit. Now with a little time on Google or Youtube, its not too hard to find music that you like from someone you've probably never even heard of.
Theres still a lot of extremely talented and even genius bands out there, just look at Apocalyptica(seriously, who would have thought that playing metal with cellos in place of guitars would sound that awesome?), Volbeat or Thrice just to name a few.
Even some of the mass radio pop is actually not that bad. I don't know if it's Adam Levine's voice or the fact that the lyrics are not all "BITCHES GOLD FRONTS BITCHES MOE-NAY FUCK Y'ALL HATERS I'M THE GREATEST" but i can listen to this without bleeding to death from my ears: But that's just my opinion, don't know about you guys..

Apocolyptica is awesome. The concept and sound is just really neat to listen to. Though I'm pretty sure they have been around for quite some time.
Americanocentric thread is Americanocentric.
If you plain Americans would widen your horizon just for once,
you would see that Europe in fact still has got
the greatest artists.
What Wagner was in the 19th/20th Century, Rammstein are for Century 21!
Fucking Metal-Opera!
rammstein is far more tolerable than Wagner.
today music is good. the new sounds is best!

But Rammstein is pretty well known over in the US as far as I can tell. Maybe not mainstream, but I hear them on the radio sometimes.
You see, the problem with music now and days is that it feels like the musicians are making music to either please the larger crowd and make personal gains by doing so. It just all feels like it's already been done before and been taken out of it's wrapper and packaged again. There's little originality and feeling in the music that is fed to us by the media today.
Don't get me wrong though, there still is good music out there these days and there are people doing something original in every genre. We're just not looking hard enough. Instead we sit down infront of our computers, go to youtube and look for every Justin Bieber video to slag him off instead of maybe checking out last.fm and finding fresh bands to listen to. I'm not accusing every one of us though of doing that it's just that we have to stop concerning ourselves with the music we don't like.
If we stop concerning ourselves with "Megadeth should've been way more famous than Metallica" or "This blues man here deserves way more credit than Justin Bieber does" it'd all be okay.
There's also the other question of "are we all turning into hipsters" and not liking these artists because they're mainstream. There are so many questions to answer. I'll just leave a few names that I've found to be quite fresh and interesting in todays music:
Red Fang:

Mos Def:

if we're talking about really fresh music then why not give this a go:

Taste in music is subjective so it's impossible for any conclusion to be reached. In my opinion for the most part this generations pop has been utterly dire, but the mainstream isn't the be all and end all and I've found a bunch of new artists I really like who have only come about this decade so I'd say anyone who legitimately thinks there is no good new music at all isn't looking hard enough.

"widen your horizon"
most americans don't want to listen to music with lyrics in a different language. it has nothing to do with horizons, it's about individual cultures.

Hey, look! Another European who thinks he is a badass because he can say all Americans are plain/ignorant/fat/lazy! Good job! You deserve a medal!
On another note, the guy before me said it pretty well. "It has nothing to do with horizons; it's about individual cultures".
my main interest in music is personality/culture. after that it's the feeling and expression, and THEN the sound/composition.
Most people worry so much about the sound it turns the entire enjoyment of music into mathematics.
