I agree that everyone has different taste and likes different music, that's obvious, you learn that when you are a child. I'm saying that music has a criteria that can determine what makes a successful composition, and therefore it can be ranked. It's about the natural law of what humans receive to be good sound and what they do not.
If you ignore natural laws (I don't even know if that's the right way to word it) you may as well throw away the *idea* of attractive people, successful lives and similar things while you're at it
my idea of a successful life is one where I sell hash and write a book that doesn't really sell well but people like it and I live in a shitty apartment. My idea of attractive people is different to other people's as well. All those things are subjective so it's not really a good comparison to make dude

You fundamentally can't compare subjective tastes.
You can compare what you guys consider good and whatnot, but you can't compare whether one is better than the other, because ultimately, you both have different ideas on what is good or not.
old guitar junk? /facepalm
do me a favour, pick your favourite club song, the one that you think will stand up best to what I think it's the best song from the above listed bands. We'll compare, and then see what's better.
Don't do it man.
Thisispain will actually blow your shit out the water.

No it can't.
There are people who would use that definition to declare this as not music.

But they would be wrong, cause music can be defined as any enjoyable sound, and there's people who like harsh noise, drone and fuck I even like the sound of industrial machinery.

That's because you're weird.
But I like listening to water, so I'm weird too.
I think there's some amazing music coming out of the indie, folk and alternative scene right now. It's a shame that club music is clogging our airwaves.
Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra, Right Away Great Captain!, Bad Books), Caleb Followill (Kings of Leon), Marcus Mumford (Mumford and Sons), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) have amazing voices and most of these guys are lyrical geniuses. I'm actually proud of the music that these guys are making today.
Most of them have epic beards too, maybe the magic is in the beard.
I was with you until Kings of Leon and Mumford and Sons

nah man shit's cool
@deaded - maybe so, it seemed like you were throwing down everyone else's musical opinion at first, which obviously turns out not be the case. Like said before we all just get defensive with our musical taste. No one knows everything about music. (Debatable with AK'z)
Ah, well. If it seemed like that, I am sorry.
anyone who thinks something of the such of that is junk really has no respect for music in general.
you may not like it, but it's not junk. i don't like electronic music but i can appreciate effort the better electronic artists put behind the music they make.
nah it's good and i dig it
but i don't like it when it's done over and over again.
guitar rock was something that made sense then, it doesn't make sense anymore.
none of the rebellious youth are picking up guitars and playing macho rock anymore.
that's what i call guitar junk.
(and i just realized i bashed bon iver heheheh)
Anyone who thinks all modern music is shit, had no idea about music whatsoever

pick my favourite club song?
oh my dear you look at this too simplistically. this needs whiskey, 4 hours of conversation, maybe a walk.

Well hurry up, we haven't got all day.
This thread is just one massive shitstorm and whenever a consensus is almost reached another random person comes in and declares all modern music is shit. It's like a cycle. Honestly, music talk should be kept to the music section.

listening to this on big loud speakers is incredible.
The most beautiful music of our generation

Hip-hop is still alive at least. Going to a Tech show soon.
Watch it, and you will know why i enjoy it so much. These guys have so much talent.

My main problem is talent shows and the quest for ratings. people win based on their sob story tricking people into voting for them and buying their debut, then they release more shit that no one cares for, a year on. it all starts again.
music this generation is fine. music in past generations is fine. music being good or bad is purely subjective. justin bieber can be good or bad, whatever the fuck no-ones listening to can be good or bad.
the omniscient orb of infinite wisdom has spoken. peace out.

Music talk can take place anywhere. Having a pissing contest like this invariably ends up with some acknowledging that music has always been as good in objective terms, and other people looking purely subjective terms. The internet is an incredibly powerful tool but if nothing else it has allowed self entitled shitheads to voice their equally worthless opinions without fear of reprisal.
I like music. You like music. We like music. Shut up about it and just enjoy it.
My opinion is that having this specific type of music discussion, that music today is dead/dying or sucks is that your time would be equally well spent pishing into the wind.
No matter what genre you like, I think everyone should see this.
This is an amazing song and film clip to match it.

I just think that the music that is shown on tv or heard in the radio is really generic and uncreative. But when you look the past decades it is the same, famous songs are often pretty generic or a bit uncreative. There is nothing wrong with that, although in our time I think there is a big focus on RnB and some of those "melodic hardcore".
But nowadays there is still plenty of terrific and great music, you just have to dig them out somewhere, sometimes it is hard to find some good stuff.
You're not looking hard enough. Honestly though, you don't even have to look that hard at all.
There are plenty of very talented original acts around.
Rock for instance: Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, The National, etc.
You could probably list dozens of great bands for every type of music.
modest mouse best band of the year all years

Hip-hop is very alive. 2012 is going to be a big year with so many sick ass releases.
2012 is going to be a big year with so many sick ass releases.
Very right, it will be a great year.
So many new things last year I lost count, but this one is a year to keep your eyes pealed.
Movies too.

I can't tell you how many people never even think about this. They complain about music today being about "alcohol, clubs and hoes" when the mainstream rock n roll of yesteryear was "sex drugs and rock n roll". But it's good because dad liked it.
Janelle Monae is planning to release 2 albums this year so 2012 is actually the most exciting year in music, with the year she released The ArchAndroid being the second best
[editline]26th February 2012[/editline]
and dad rock is gross lmao
Monae is definitely a great example of modern RnB being thought provoking and creative.
She's pop, but there's more to what she does. She takes her creativity and puts a persona into it.

also D'Angelo
