• Music? Is this generation making shit music, or are people not looking hard enough?
I can't tell you how many people never even think about this. They complain about music today being about "alcohol, clubs and hoes" when the mainstream rock n roll of yesteryear was "sex drugs and rock n roll". But it's good because dad liked it.
I really agree with you on that matter. Often when you are young things appear more awesome or because someone you really liked appreciated that song.
however the older you get, the more likely you are to change how you enjoy things. I remember always memorising a "beat/tune" as a kid. Now it's more about what I'm thinking as I enjoy it.
OP could of been a lot better. Anyways, with every generation, there is always music that will be mainstream. Because of this, if your genre is not the mainstream, you won't see it much. People are influenced by popular music and as a generation starts getting into [insert genre], more and more bands will pop up from [insert genre]. Thus, it will appear like all music is just [insert genre]. Of course, there are many bands that are not well known that make all kinds of music. Dubstep and Pop are both extremely popular as of late, Dubstep has not completely hit the mainstream and Pop is still high and mighty, with artists like Adele being highly accoladed. You can always find music that you like. Hard Rock / Metal isn't main-stream anymore. Rock used to be extremely bit in the 60s and 70s with large events like Woodstock drawing in thousands of people. But I still found a band from Norway (Called Lordi) that still makes excellent music and they even happen to sing in English (Not Rammstein English, Proper English). They won Eurovision 2006, and opened for Eurovision 2007. You may know "Epic Sax Guy", he was in one of the acts that played in Eurovision 2007 (I believe the band was named Moldova). IIRC, Moldova also won. It shows that everyone has varying tastes and just because one genre is mainstream doesn't mean you can't find other music.
how on earth is metal not mainstream, have you gone mad?
Hard Rock / Metal isn't main-stream anymore.
You do know that Metal is still incredibly popular? Especially the really heavy core stuff.
But I still found a band from Norway (Called Lordi) that still makes excellent music and they even happen to sing in English (Not Rammstein English, Proper English).
Lordi is Finnish.
I'd put metal in the top 5 most popular styles of music at the moment. That's not a joke, there are entire countries liking the stuff.
I have happened to see Lordi live, they are good and I once listened to them a lot. In my own tastes thought they didn't fit too well. They are a great band, but they are definetly a band based off of GWAR. Plus at their concert they use too much fireworks...
See the thing is , anyone can make music now . Anybody with a computer can make music . Now, though it's a great thing that music is now accessible to anyone , it also means that quasi-musicians/artists who learn techniques and use DAW's (Digital audio workstations - FL Stuido - Logic etc) can make music . And if you think that all we had is Lady Gaga etc then you are talking about MAINSTREAM MUSIC and not MUSIC AS A WHOLE. you are being retarded and basing your musical opinions off of what radio stations and music channels play. [editline]27th February 2012[/editline] and judging music based on the kind of person the artist is is fucking RETARDED
music has always been shit, and pop music especially, because it's basically engineered to be trash. it's quick and easy and it turns a profit before people get fucking sick of it. and we dont remember the bad bands that played with led zeppelin and nirvana and because of it think that they were the averages in their time periods instead of the outstanding examples in an overwhelming sea of trash and because the internet is a thing, the overwhelming sea of trash is a lot more audible and people are sharing the music they listen to more than ever. people who listen to really shitty dubstep/deathcore/whatever you don't like are an audible portion instead of just the weird kids in the corner of the lunchroom that you will never encounter elsewhere [editline]27th February 2012[/editline] also you can judge the objective quality of music pretty easily if the fans of a band listen to the band because they are more interested in the band's image or what other people think of the listener, then they are a bad band. any number of bands that you (yes you!) hate are bad because their success as a band has nothing to do with the music they produce and because of it they just produce horrible trash.
quasi-musicians
no such thing. if you make music you're a musician simple as that

You know there was a time when the mainstream was giving light to some of the most talented groups that changed the way we would think about music ? I know I would want the mainstream to be good again, who wouldn't ? CBS used to have a classical branch of their record label in the late sixties that barely made enough money to record but they still funded them because they believed in them and thought they were really something . That's fucking cool . I know an "underground" (and I use that term very loosely) exists but nothing has really struck me . I enjoy some modern bands but I really don't think there has been anything too worthwhile for quite some time . and don't kid yourself with the whole "judging" thing . Everyone judges each other, it's called being a human .

I however cannot stand screaming so I don't go near that shit :V I don't even really listen to radio or watch music television so I don't care what is mainstream. Yeah, I definitely don't bother with modern underground (meaning today's underground) at all . But it's not that I don't have faith that something good is out there, it's because I have always preferred music from the 60's and early 70's . Though I like a lot of music from most decades I mostly listen to 60's . I'm satisfied with what I know at the moment. If there is something out there , it will come to me . I too have people who are always trying to show me new music I haven't heard yet.

It never hasn't been trendy. There is no such thing as unpure music, music is music, even noise can be turned into music. The core of your argument is that current music is being flooded with what you call trash. Your problem is right there, this trash is considered good by other people, AND THERE IS NOTHING FUCKING WRONG WITH THAT. So people have different opinions that you and that there is more of the music that you don't like being produced. What's wrong with it? It's musical expansion, we always need new ways to create music, we need new types of music. If that doesn't happen, music will become stale and shit. JUST BECAUSE THE NEW STUFF THAT IS BEING CREATED DOESN'T FIT TO YOUR FUCKING TASTES DOES. NOT. MEAN. IT. IS. TRASH. Grow the fuck up, accept other people's music tastes and realise you are a fucking idiot for thinking you're superior because you listen to music that isn't 'trash'.

There are plenty of quality mainstream musicians out there that shouldn't require any effort to hear. Radiohead, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Gorillaz, Kanye West, Beastie Boys, all of them are obscenely popular and totally embedded in modern society, and they still produce quality listening. The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc. also fall into the latter category.
Are you talking about judging the artists' personality base on the music he plays? You look at it from different angles, personal feelings and experiences and make your call. Exact same thing with an artist's work. But in music, more people are prejudiced against certain styles/personalities. It happens less in people for movies for some reason.
