Music? Is this generation making shit music, or are people not looking hard enough?

because tastes of the popular amount are changing from what ours are. It's not bad music cause technically no music is bad. If someone made it its cause someone likes it.
It's just that bad music is SO much more visible because of YouTube and other sites.
People also tend to overreact to bad music. Think of how many songs you hate, and compare that number with how many you like. Odds are, there's probably less songs you hate that you know about, unless you go out LOOKING for them.
So overall... Yes, there is more bad music. But only because more music in general is being made.
Plus, the newest trends are completely against the older tastes in music.
I wouldn't say that popular music is shit, it's just too generic and simplistic in comparison to underground songs.
That's what popular music has always been. A catchy, simple song that won't get out of your head.

Or because of money. It's called selling out.

Changing your style drastically to make money is selling out.
Making music TO make money is not.
No, this generation isn't making shit music. You're thinking of pop music, which has never been good independant of the generation it was produced in.

ahem, beatles
ahem, beatles
I don't even like the beatles that much, but there will always be exceptions to the rules.
ahem, beatles
Weren't they more rock?
Weren't they more rock?
the beatles wrote the book on modern pop music.
Define "bad music."
Also, the question itself is unfair and biased against mainstream artists. One's popularity is based on the number of listeners it can gather, which is reflected by the album sales. Then, the album sales dictate which artists are to appear at the top of the list. Radio stations then broadcast these songs because that's what the majority are seemingly asking for them to play. So what does that say about us; that we have shitty taste? Not quite. It gives us a general picture of what we like to hear via this cycle.
Music preference can't be shitty, only more or less compatible with our own. The matter is subjective.
Akayz is ruling this thread.
My father, who is nearly 60 years old, firmly believes that we are currently in a musical golden age. Look at stuff like BadBadNotGood, Death Grips, Professor Kliq, OFWGKTA, they would never have gotten anywhere without the internet advent. There are literally countless good bands out there, all totally accessible by anyone, when in the past it was up to record companies to provide exposure. Music has only gotten exponentially better. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.
Plus, the newest trends are completely against the older tastes in music.
I wouldn't say that. Today's pop music have very very much in common with the pop music of the 80's (and 90's for that matter). Everything is synthesized, the more effects the better, a good beat is what's most important in the song, etc.
There are literally countless good bands out there
Exactly. The thing is that you can take any style of any era there ever was, and you will find at least 10 good bands playing that kind of music today.
Today's pop music have very very much in common with the pop music of the 80's.
Very disagree.
Give me an example of a modern Tears for Fears or aha.
Fair enough a lot of things today use synthesizers but the production style back then used a lot of reverberation.
In my opinion the 1980s were actually worse in terms of pop music.
I find that some movie or TV show soundtracks are properly amazing these days.
I dont think it counts as something you'd broadcast somewhere or sell records of, but there is some brilliant stuff out there.

Even though the production and sound is different the principle is similar. A lot of it is very overproduced and uses synthesizers, drum machines and such.

Alright, maybe not the best examples of pop bands, but still, like eric95 said, the whole synthesizer/drum machine/electronic is very prominent in the pop music today.

What about the culture?
What do you mean, like fashion?
What do you mean, like fashion?
Yes. That's an aspect of culture.
Back then there wasn't so much of a stereotypical attitude with music. You could like a pop song and not be weird.
And now you can't?
Well not really, because as I just mentioned there wasn't so much of a stereotypical attitude toward music back then.
Also if I'm not wrong, back then individual records used to sell a heck of a lot more than they would now.
And now you can't?
Justin Beiber for life.
Looking though videos on Youtube and hearing what people say on this forum, I've been seeing a lot of this:
"Hello im 15 years oldi would like to apologise for what my generation has done to music.that is* all."
My question is;
Is this correct and our generation is creating garbage music, or are people not looking hard enough for good current bands and have that, "I hate my generation" Mentality that exists in 90's cartoon fanatics?
Smart kid most people listen to bullshit. Smart Kid though. Anyway, I would recommend Listening to Queen(RIP Freddie Mecury), Public Enemy, Tupac(RIP), Biggie Smalls(RIP), Nate Dogg(RIP), ACDC, Kiss, John Lennon(RIP), Run DmC, Suga Hill Gang, Grand Master Flash, Ray Charles(RIP), B.B. King, The Chi Lites, Pete Rock, Heavy D (RIP). Man I can go on with the list man. Great Music Generation of the Past.
This thread hurts my insides.
"For example. The majority of people disliking his music does not affect his profit from the number of people that enjoy his music."
I think we can all agree that Justin Beiber is a given, definition of shit music. We don't need to see this here, it's a compliment to define shit music.
It's not Bieber you hate, it's teen pop.
I think art in general takes a lot of dedication and skill for one to be good at it and produce quality content.
Maybe the thing with today's music isn't that its shittier in general its that because of how quickly and easily people can produce and share their creations there is a lot more bad content rising to the surface because of how now anyone can create it? Perhaps people remember the past with better music because it took a lot of time and practice to be a successful musician, it took a lot of effort and not everyone got to show their artistic talents?
So maybe the easier it is to create, the worse the content becomes, unless they are truly talented?
That or we just aren't used to the new wave of music...
tl;dr :words:

Except it's not shittier in general because anyone can make it which most importantly means that the record companies don't have a considerable impact on the artistic product. Even moreso, any band can get exposure through the internet and its not down to the handful of superstar bands to dictate the future of music anymore.
