I don't think it was sympathy exclusively. She seems like a person that really believes in authority, and the fact that it didn't immediately went her way when the police arrived was probably pretty upsetting for her. She's a sick bitch, that's for certain, though.
She teared up when cops arrived, not when they haven't done what she wanted.
jesus, that stepdad is HUGE. towards the end when he's standing next to the cops he has like a full foot on both of them. Also, I lost count of how many times the mom said "you're a child you (aren't ready for information)(can't make decisions)(are a complete moron)" or whatever similar statement, but every time she did I wanted to punch her.
Well, negative reinforcement in a psychological context is the removal of negative stimulus to change behavior. Also while I don't think a parent has any place spanking a child that's 14 years old there is an application for it as a punishment. The issue is that it needs to be approached very carefully by the parent, it's not for them to vent their anger, it's not to put the child through as much pain as possible, it's to have the child associate unacceptable behavior with that negative result. This is for children that are too young to understand the full scope of what they've done and have only thought of themselves before conducting their actions. If the parent approaches it with a level head and self control, it's no different than a time-out. Of course when the child gets old enough to understand why something is wrong spanking is completely unnecessary and degrading though. I'm not telling anyone how to raise their kids though, I don't think I'd even want to spank a kid if I had one. I wasn't even spanked as a child, but I think it's a bit much to say that it's always a negative thing to do.(Also I am in no way agreeing with the mom in the video)
Forcing a child to associate unacceptable behavior with physical pain is the problem here, not just any sort of negative reinforcement. All the evidence seems to indicate that corporal punishment is not a good thing for a child's development. It's completely different from a time-out.
so now you're saying a kid with gay parents won't be well balanced? bullshit
actually im just saying don't leave the child in the hands of a psycho bitch
Forcing a child to associate unacceptable behavior with physical pain is the problem here, not just any sort of negative reinforcement. It's completely different from a time-out.
Again, this isn't negative reinforcement, negative reinforcement involves removing a stimulus that causes discomfort instead of applying one. Also all evidence seems to indicate that using corporal punishment in the home as the primary method of punishment is a bad thing(I'd like to note that studies that have been conducted on this subject generally do not differentiate too well between abusive and non-abusive corporal punishment) and on that subject I completely agree. I think that corporal punishment should be applied only in the most extreme circumstances as it loses effect when used commonly, there is also evidence that this sort of very carefully applied corporal punishment lessens anti-social tendencies in children. So I suppose I was wrong in saying a spanking is the same as a time out as a spanking is a more severe form of punishment, but severe disobedience demands severe punishment. As long as the parent understands how to do it properly and is doing it with the sole intention of helping the child improve, I have no problem with spankings.
After watching this video an reading this thread, I am surprised how many people have terrible parents. I am glad that my parents are together, happy, and kind to me but still able to teach me right from wrong. I am a genuinely lucky person to have such parents.
I had the same thing with my parents. Basically my brothers and I were the pieces on the chessboard and my dad would try to gain custody of us to one up my mom when my dad was a crazy dickhead who had his mind warped by his now wife.
I'd have trouble speaking up about any person like that when they're within earshot looming over you, let alone my own mother, it was really brave of him and I'm glad it turned out alright, I'd hate to have a parent like the mother.
Hitting anyone to establish respect is ridiculous.
It worked on me. Got spanked once as a kid, learned not to be a little shit ever again and I haven't gotten any behavior problems. Nothing like a good ol' "Wait until your father comes home." to put the fear of god in you.
She openly said she was looking for loopholes in the law, shes a very manipulative woman.
Ooh boy, this is so hard to watch. I've been the oldest kid in a semi-messy divorce too, so my blood is on fire right now. I keep having to pause this and go watch something funny to cool off a bit. Forty-five minutes to go...
On the topic of how the police handled this, most cops are like those officers, they are calm and collected, its just the officers who are not that make the news, people love to focus on the bad and not the good.
The step-dad looks like a slimmer version of Peter Griffin.
The step-dad looks like a slimmer version of Peter Griffin.
he looks like a thicker, older, Alex Kraile from Marble Hornets
I'm utterly convinced the women has some form of mental illness
I love how she says he'll edit the video and he uploaded a hour long unedited vid showing everything.
Its been a while since i've seen a video of police being very professional. Im glad the kid got to live with his dad like he wanted.
Because the majority of the time people record the police when they are doing the opposite. Just because you don't see videos of police being professional doesn't mean that they aren't normally.
At about an hour in, when the cop is telling him that she does have the right to get him out, you can see a smirk pop up on her face for a second or so. Ugh.
I can't tell what's worse, divorce or marriage in the first place.

The man in the video is the dad.
I can't tell what's worse, divorce or marriage in the first place.
Marriage is fine, but the divorce rates have skyrocketed since the 70's. It can be a lot of things, idiot kids get married before they're 25 and don't know what they want, both parents are ambitious and neither want to be the stay at home parent, family is not well off financially and the stress of having kids with paying off a new house or car makes one of the parents snap. Marriage can break down easily and I'd rather do what my parents are doing. They aren't married 'officially' but stay together. (Mostly because I'm a bastard child.) I learned not to go for marriage since I saw how my dad had a shitty marriage with his first wife.
i feel bad for that baby my god [editline]16th June 2013[/editline] lol and at like 23 minutes she's like "You really want the road covered in cops? Do you really want the cops?" but they were the ones that called the cops lol
When my parents divorced they asked me (I was 12) who I wanted to live with. This seems like the smartest and most obvious option - why don't more people do that?
My parents split up when I was a baby, and even with my mom having custody of me, I was allowed to stay over at my Dad's place whenever I wanted, even at bad situations, which I actually never had which is good. I really think there was more abuse in-between of what he said and you could tell she was faking, avoiding, and even making up a lot of the stuff. Her crying never really started until the cops showed up, which shows that she was probably trying to show that she was the "better" and "more caring" parent. I'm glad it turned out alright for the Kid.
I love how the stepdad is just standing there "please don't make me put up with this shit, woman"
I'm just 35 minutes into the video and I already have a strong urge to punch the woman in the face. I really feel bad for the kid, but I'm really glad that he did the right thing.
Wow, the mother just lying straight-faced at her son and the camera to try and get him out. That's the worst part to me, that you would demonstrate to your son that the best way to deal with a situation is to lie. Also why would you buy a 14 year old a car? I know that was probably a lie too but I don't know what in her head made it sound plausible.
Kid is brave as shit.
LOL at the 45 minute mark. "This is the biggest day of your life!" "What is?" She (horribly) acts like she's hurt he doesn't know and then sits there in silence like a dumbass trying to make up a story. "We were gonna pull the trans am from out back! Your car is here! We were gonna film it!" Smoooooth...
