Just try to dig around the signal, never just shove your shovel anywhere..
Yeah, those guys must have fucked it up.
I still don't want to do battlefield detecting though, it's just a risk that I don't want to take. I'd rather continue hunting silver, gold, and coins at fields and parks, it's just more relaxing and rewarding.
I want to get into gold, silver and ancient coins detecting. All I have done is battlefield detecting.
Jeez, I might be able to squeeze in one more metal detecting session. An extremely rare heat wave has struck Finland from the Azores, and we've gotten heavy rain and +5C temperatures for the past couple of days. The snow has almost melted away.
The weather is really weird here too.. We have had like +15c all week.. Normally it should be around 0c..
It's 5am. Getting my gear up, should be at the fields at 6-7am. Gotta go early to squeeze every single hour out of this opportunity.
Sun only goes up at 10, and goes down at 14, so flashlights are gonna be useful
[editline]22nd December 2015[/editline]
And then I forgot to take my flashlight. This is going to be one dank ass session, I can feel it in my bones
And then the bus drives past without stopping. I saw him do a double take "the fuck, someone's here at 6 am?" but by then it was too late for him to stop. The dank adventures continue in 1 hour when the next bus arrives

A drunk piss-smelling homeless guy has appeared and is talking about how he planted potatoes 40 years ago with his friend. This keeps getting better
Checked out the sauna today. There's something under the floor. Seriously. We have no idea what it is yet, but the detector went nuts over that particular spot that just happens to be hollow. We'll open it on Sunday most likely.
Only 200m from the house, there is an old German battleline full of foxholes and stuff. It's going to be a goldmine. The guy at the house had already found an old Spork (spoon/fork combo) with the German eagle and swastika on it, in perfect condition, without using a detector. I had no idea this shit was so close to my city.
So on Sunday we'll both open up the floor (hopefully revealing old German or Russian rifles) and also detect the shit out of the foxholes.
What ever came of this Orkel?
Nothing of interest, oy was probably emptied before us.
Today's session update: found three 1 ör coins from the 1700s so far. Few more hours to go
[editline]22nd December 2015[/editline]
Fourth coin is a newer 1900s Finnish penni, probs 20p
Guess that wasn't the year's last run afterall, buddy just called and told me "yo, I found an untouched field with old barns, ready to go in 15 min?"
I'll report on the finds in 2-3 hours
Always been keen to get into doing metal detecting but im rather limited in australia to finding things dropped into rivers that have dried up or such since the majority of areas that hold anything from post colonization are generally museums(gold mines etc) and there really wasn't much military activity here save for the northern territory.
I didn't find anything this time, we only had 30 minutes before the sun went down.
But my friend did. Just 5 minutes in, he found a fucking silver pocket watch from the late 1800s. The fuck kind of luck is that
We were both pissed at the fact that he dented it with his shovel when digging (dig around it ya cunt). But it's still awesome. Shaky car pictures

that dent is SO annoying
Thinking about getting this next summer

It's a much bigger search coil which gives a big boost to the search depth. I'm very interested, since it would uncover targets that our normal coils haven't got the power to get to.
Looks good to me!

I cleaned the upper left corner coin using electrolysis with a car battery. The results are pretty fucken good

All the details became visible, and even the date is now certain (1719). This thing is 300 years old and it shines like new.
Electrolysis is my new god
Ghetto electrolysis setup, currently working on a 1929 10 markka coin. I'll post the results later.

Looking good so far. 20 minutes in and the black gunk is starting to come off, revealing the copper beneath.

Well I took the metal detector through the property and found 3 Cola bottles I assume are Royal Crown Cola from my research, old Gatorade can, cowbell, some copper piping which should fetch a couple bucks.
And then the thing next to the cowbell that I don't know what is.
What detector are you using?
What detector are you using?
It's called a coinmaster by whites electronics, I don't think its anything special considering I got for like 50 bucks from a pawn shop.
Coinmasters are actually pretty good
$50 for a Coinmaster is a good deal, but it's not a particularly good metal detector. Has problems detecting smaller targets like coins (even though it's called a coinmaster) which is a pretty big downside. I would recommend upgrading to a proper detector ASAP.
I might, but this isn't my main hobby, and around where I live there isn't a lot of history, the oldest coins I've found have been from like 2002.
So turns out the 10 markka 1929 was already in such terrible condition that electrolysis did not make it any more presentable than it already was. The black gunk came off but it looks the same otherwise as before.
I'll try it on a 2 Kopeck coin next. All of these coins are expendable and monetarily worthless so it doesn't really matter if they turn out bad.
I went metal detecting outside my house, and all I found were old toy cars I lost when I was a kid, aha
I went metal detecting outside my house, and all I found were old toy cars I lost when I was a kid, aha
Same happened at my grandma's place, except the toy cars were from my uncle's childhood from the 1970s.

The 2 Kopeck coin didn't fare too well either. Seems the entire top layer was oxidized verdigris instead of copper so most the detail went poof. I have a few other Kopecks laying around so not a big loss.
[editline]25th January 2016[/editline]
This 10 penniä from 1911 fared well.

The coin has this strange glimmer to it, as if the surface was full of microscopic holes (which it probably is from corrosion):

When it's moved around it's as if someone spread glitter all over it
The snow has started melting WAY early this year. 1½ months earlier than last year. Looks like I can get some detecting done within a week!
[t]http://horobox.reager.org/u/orkel_1459787768.jpg[/t]
(found a couple dozen 60s-80s coins around the trees last year)
The farmlands will take longer to melt though, the places with the really old stuff. Probably a couple more weeks, let's hope the warm weather continues, supposed to for at least 10 more days, dunno after that.
One of my friends found this in Germany.

Gold coin from 1409. Holy fucking lucky cunt.
[editline]9th April 2016[/editline]
Also this
[t]http://i.imgur.com/jJgenGt.jpg[/t]
Visited the nearby fields today. Although the snow has melted, the ground unfortunately has not. The top 10-15 cm is soft, but any deeper and it's just a solid block of ice. Impossible to dig any older targets.
I'll have to wait 1-2 more weeks, maybe it'll be easier then.
I want to go detecting some more but I don't really like doing it alone..
HOLY SHIT. I found old silver coins. Two of them. These were my goal for this year, and I got them on my very first day of 2016 at the fields (last one doesn't count since it was frozen to hell).

Left is 1 Zloty (15 Kopecks) from 1838.
Right is 5 Öre from 1693. Really old silver and need to figure out if those black tarnish spots can be cleaned in any way.
[editline]18th April 2016[/editline]
This 5 Kopeck coin was found by my friend about 30 metres from where I found the Zloty. It has pretty stunning detail.

The Zloty is apparently a Polish coin from when it was under Russian domination, and is extremely rare in Finland.
But it's not quite as well preserved as that 5 Kopeck coin for some reason (maybe because it came from Poland all the way to Finland and is older :v: )
Cleaned the 5 Öre with ketchup+vinegar, and it doesn't look like it has the plague anymore.

It's gotten some nicks and bumps from the years in the field, but it's still awesome.
