It was a good day. 9 coins from 1700-1800, and a silver hair pin from the 1700s (hairpin found by friend).

I currently have metal detector that does not have a pin pointer built in. It only beeps once when it goes over an area with something. I actually miss my old cheap Radio Shack $20 one that I found so much stuff with, but the sound was annoying with no headphone jack. But I need to get a pin pointer. I will ask the pros. What is the recommended pin pointer to get? I have a little extra money and I would like to get either a good pin pointer or a new metal detector in general.
Besides some fairly large scrap iron pieces I found next to the river (kinda looks like a piece of a pickaxe), I have found enough nails to build a small/medium shed, but no coins or interesting pieces. But I live in rural Pennsylvania USA. With my cheap RS one I used when I was younger, I found tools, coins, jewelry, etc. Nothing really valuable but interesting.

A device used in the reins of horses. Produced anywhere between the year 800-1800, so it might even be from the viking age.
Got an email from the museum today. Here is the translation:
Thanks for contacting us! Where was it found, what are the exact coordinates?
My own estimate for the age of this wheel is around 1500. I cannot judge it any better from just the photograph. An iron buckle of some sort seems to be hanging from it, which will be known more accurately when it is investigated in more detail.
I would like you to send the wheel to the national board of antiquities for a closer look. You can send it to this address for free *address*
Let's get back in touch!

I've just got my first metal detector, a former Soviet minesweeper made in the 80s. Will have batteries for it soon. If it works, any idea what I should expect with regards to its detection ability? Orkel?
Supposedly it can be used underwater???
Any markings on it regarding designation? e.g a serial number or anything, could probably search it online to see what it's capable of.
All I could find is other examples of the unit for sale, model number is W-3P/A.
Oh ok. Honestly I'm not sure how well it'll perform, mines aren't exactly small and not buried particuarly deep, and if thats what it's made to detect, I'm not sure how it'll do with smaller things.
I stayed on a 100+ year old fram for the eclipse and mentioned to the land owner's wife I have a metal detector and she said I should come back in the spring with it :joy:
Found a small silver today

Decided to re-visit the regulations here for going out and detecting, turns out I only need a $25 license (I initial thought it was something much more) that you just buy and your done.
May have to finally invest in a detector next paycheck
Found this today

My aunt had lost her ring, so I went to find it, and I did find the ring. Then she told me that there used to be a horse stable right next to her house behind the ruins of a stone wall, and conveniently they had cleared that area of bushes during the past week.
I jump over the old stone wall, turn on my detector, and walk just 2 steps before it beeps practically right next to the wall. That very first beep was this silver coin, 10 kopeks from 1852.
Any updates on that WW2 paper that OP found inside of a locket? Have you contacted those specialists?

Didn't find much, an öre coin from 1761 and a 2kopeks coin from 1812. This field has been searched over and over for the past couple years so all the best finds are mostly found by us. There's probably a silver coin somewhere still.. there always is.

This 332 year old coin is insanely well preserved.

Here's a Christian cross pendant, from about the same age (1500-1600). Lots of detail still visible

Small silver ring dated to ~1970s. Also some copper coins. I've found 16 or so copper coins the past 2 days from this beach area, all of them dated 1600-1700.

@Orkel would you be interested in selling that cross pendant?
No it's going into the local museum tomorrow!
1 Altyn silver coin, 1718. Worth 3 kopeks at the time.
Also the top of a silver ring, likely 1800s. The ring itself seems to have broken off, just the top remains.

Permission acquired to an old field, this thing made my ears explode with a huge 94 signal on my AT Pro. A very large and heavy 5 kopek coin from 1782. Great preservation.
Right out of the ground:

After carefully removing dirt and dust with a soft toothbrush:

After applying a thin layer of oil by gently tapping (not scrubbing), it gives it a protective layer and also brings out details and patina:

Same but in direct, bright sunlight. The sunlight makes the parts with the patina extremely noticeable:

Lovely find! Forgot about this thread. I really need to get some permissions somewhere, haven't been out in probably nearly a year.
Would you guys be interested in some rockhounding stuff or should I make a separate thread for it?
Email came from museum today, they want to add the cross to their collections and asked if they could. I gave permission for it.
They confirmed it is a cross pendant that was usually carried from birth to the grave, so it's not surprising I found it at a field that is located right next to a 1500s church cemetery.
Likely it was buried with someone's corpse a few hundred years ago, eventually the casket and corpse decomposed and the cross moved around due to farming etc before being found by me.
By sheer chance I finally found a metal detecting group local to me. I happened to be driving past a field they were in, and I have now signed up! Going to my first dig with them tomorrow, I'll post anything interesting I find here!
Went metal detecting today

Didn't find much, just 3 coins. One from the 1800s and two from the 1700s. And a button.
So, the results from yesterday:

Nothing absolutley amazing, and no Roman coins unfortunatley, but someone else in the group found a very nice Roman brooch, and quite a few people found medieval coins. I was told however, that the little round thing between the button and the bullet was a buckle from c.1300! so I'm happy with that. Definitley gonna go out as aften as I can now, very enjoyable day.
Ah, classic UK. I spend 4 years detecting and my oldest find is from 1599, meanwhile you go on a casual trip and find something from the 1300's and the others find Roman and Medieval stuff. It's time to start packing my bags!
