Am I the only one disappointed that Kickass wasn't nominated for anything?
I thought it was a fucking excellent movie and should have at least had 1 nomination :saddowns:
No, you're not the only one

Chloe MOretz deserved some recognition for Hit Girl, she was awesome.
I'm streaming 6/10 of the nominations for best picture today.

Dragon needs some love. Its been getting shafted by Toy Story 3 the entire award season. Its a genuinely awesome movie, and, at the very least, deserves best original score because of its fantastic soundtrack.

The soundtrack yeah, but it's worth it just for Derezzed (which I feel could hold its own in the "original song" category).
I hope it could, but you see electronic music still has a stigma attached to it.
Umm...
The Social Network's music was all electronic, at least in part.
Umm...

Watching it right now and there's piano, violins, and other instruments.
It's not all electronic.

Listen closer. Every song at least has some sort of drone or electronic drums.
Anyway, a good half of the songs are mostly electronic.
For me, it all boils down to either Black Swan, Social Network, or True Grit. If any of those three films win the Oscar, I'll be satisfied.
Best Motion Picture of the Year
Black Swan or The Kings Speech.
The academy LOVE period films so the Kings Speech fits highly in their usual choice bracket, I haven't seen Black Swan but from the sounds of things it's a gripping film and would also probably stand the highest chance of winning.
(I don't really enjoy those films I would prefer 127 hours to win)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
James Franco in 127 hours. You cannot make a 2 hour film with practically a 1 man cast watchable and not recieve this award. His performance was fantastic, felt real and intense and I truly believe he deserves this award.
Also, wouldn't it be great for Daniel Desario from Freaks and Geeks to be an academy award winning actor? :)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Natalie Portman for Black Swan (2010)
Again, I haven't seen this film,, but from the other actress' in this catagory I would back Portman, purely off some of her older performances and what I've heard about her in this film, she had the dedication to learn Ballet and perform all her own moves in this film which deserves credit and reward.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale for The Fighter (2010)
He is an amazing actor when given the right role, and THIS is a choice role for him. I recently watched American Psycho for the first time and was stunned by his acting abilities, he deserves this nomination more so than the rest on that list and his performance in The Fighter should easily seal the deal.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Hailee Steinfeld for True Grit
She is in this catagory purely out of strategy. She isn't the calibre to contend with some of the more experienced actress' but in supporting actress she carries the torch above the other women. Her performance, considering her age, was magnificent.
Best Achievement in Directing
The Coen Brothers
They really hit the mark on the feel for this film, they got the flavour of the old west nailed into the backbone of their production and you can appreciate the effort put in, this was a magnificent achievement in directing and I hope they are, once again, rewarded for it.
Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen
Inception (2010): Christopher Nolan
The most inventive original story I have seen in such a long time, He is the only contender truly deserving of this award this year.
Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published
True Grit
This retelling of a classic film more than pays tribute to the great story, but adds a fresh feeling to it and I feel, surpasses the original.
Best Animated Feature Film of the Year
Toy Story 3 (2010): Lee Unkrich
If you disagree you have been paying NO ATTENTION to the awards since this catagory was introduced.
Best Achievement in Cinematography
Inception (2010): Wally Pfister - This film oozes great cinematography, each scene was made with care and attention to detail, a great use of effects and camera work to give a truly gripping experience.
Or
True Grit - It's the Coen Brothers. Good cinematography is their thing..
Best Achievement in Editing
127 Hours - It's a film about 1 man not moving. This film is built on a foundation of incredible editing to keep the pace perfect throughout the feature.
Best Achievement in Art Direction
Inception
Best Achievement in Costume Design
The King's Speech (2010): Jenny Beavan
Best Achievement in Makeup
The Wolfman (2010): Rick Baker, Dave Elsey

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score
Inception (2010): Hans Zimmer
Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song
Toy Story 3 (2010): Randy Newman("We Belong Together")
Best Achievement in Sound Mixing
Inception (2010)
Best Achievement in Sound Editing
TRON: Legacy or Inception (2010)

Best Achievement in Visual Effects
Inception
I've left out the catagories I haven't seen.
I'm sorry to disappoint those of you who were really rooting for The Social Network, but it just wasn't a good film. Not good enough for Academy awards. Though the way the awards are going, I wouldn't be surprised if someone tried to award them something.
Actually, I cannot believe Inception or Tron didn't get nominated for best score. Those were the two best soundtracks of the year, despite Tron being shite.

Eh, it was good as a soundtrack but I was expecting it to be more "Daft Punk" than anything... If it weren't for Derezzed or the song that plays while the credits roll, or the fact that I'm a huge fan... I wouldn't of even known it was made by them.

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score
127 Hours (2010): A.R. Rahman
How to Train Your Dragon (2010): John Powell
Inception (2010): Hans Zimmer
The King's Speech (2010): Alexandre Desplat
The Social Network (2010): Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross
i remember nothing about inception's score.
Not even the BWWWOOOOOOM of the french horns? Everyone remembers those!
i thought of those as more of a sound effect, like an orchestral hit when something jumps out of a closet
[editline]12th February 2011[/editline]
i guess that counts as a score but a single good element doesn't really make the entire score great
OP were the years next to the nominated movies and actors necessary?
So, I saw Black Swan today.
How is it not nominated for sound editing?!
Anyway, I'm torn between Black Swan and Inception for best directing.

What the fuck does that have to do with Tron?
Tron's score is by Daft Punk, which means EVERY song in the score is purely electronic, not just support elements. There is a strong toffee nosed stigma still directed to that type of music, even though it's just as hard as any other genre to create a good piece of music.
It's sad that people think it's just a matter of pressing random buttons.

Lots of Daft Punk's music was composed with classical instruments. In fact, most of the soundtrack wasn't electronic. Maybe they used synths to make the string noises, but it sounds like an orchestra to me. Hell, I'd say Daft Punk's soundtrack is more traditionally orchestrated than Reznor's.
I don't think The Social Network deserves these nominations other than best screenplay from material previously...etc.
