Oh I see, so the ideal political system we should have should justify censoring opposing views. Bioshock is a cool game with a great story, but it just seems like a shoddy political argument to me.
...maybe you could build it all above, on land. Then lower it down?
well, imagine the pressure, if you ever saw sphere, they did a depressurizing process which took a couple hours. in that time, you can destroy any stationary object you want
which is a bad thing
Fuck underwater let's have space stations to live on... wait.... Whoops...
the greatest natural barrier/defense EVER?
Might as well have a city on a mountain/cliff.
There's an on land rapture already in existence. [sp]It's called Somalia.[/sp]
...maybe you could build it all above, on land. Then lower it down?
Yeah, if you want it to explode from the pressures. Once it reaches a certain point the hull will rupture and the entire thing will roll up into a ball.
The resources needed to sustain a sizeable population would be inordinate.
I get that it's an argument against Objectivism and all but they did a shitty job of it. Rapture fell apart because ADAM fucked everyone up in the head. I don't get where unrestricted capitalism and whatnot came in and fucked it up. Perhaps I should actually finish the game. I just realized I never actually beat it.
ADAM was more like the spark that lit the powder keg. There had to be some conditions that existed before then for the shit to hit the fan. Andrew Ryan made Rapture because he felt people should be able to make their own decisions with out being hampered by governments. His system attracts all the brightest people, but they need a lower to do the menial tasks for them. The system in Rapture ends up causing one where there is a large class divide. There is no public education or social guarantees to help these people, and it keeps them in a perpetual state of servitude. This brews discontent among this class of people. Fontaine's plasmid business becomes powerful and human ambition sets in between Ryan and Fontaine. Both want power. Ryan has to choose whether or not he can truly choose to follow his ideals if it can also result in himself being defeated- after all, according to Objectivism, Fontaine overtaking Ryan is fair. By this point Fontaine and Ryan are going after one another and Ryan begins to become more oppressive in his techniques. Fontaine begins to use ADAM as a way to overthrow Ryan, but he needs an army to do so. Fontaine is able to exploit the class differences that this system generated and uses the anger of the poor to his advantage by exploiting promises of a workers/socialist revolution, using religion to get the masses riled up, and ultimately building the army he needs. This allows him to spark the New Years riots which end up destroying the city. Even with out ADAM though, there still would have been this problem of the gap between rich and poor. Historically, and this is obvious to anyone, the moment that gap gets too large it gets more and more probable that there will be widespread discontent and the likelihood of revolution increases. To me this sort of system will inevitably have to have a class of laborers to serve the thinkers, professionals, and industrialists, and problems with greed will set in and cause the same problems they thought they were escaping. Had these vast class differences not existed, it wouldn't have been possible for Fontaine to start this mess in the first place. There would have not been a lower class to exploit. It's not necessarily a slam against Capitalism in its entirety, it's more of one against the laissez-faire capitalism that Ayn Rand's Objectivism entitled. I don't think Bioshock's goal was necessarily that though, the setting was meant to make the game's atmosphere stand out (oh look, stylish art and moral ambiguity! A thinking man's game!), not so much to send a message. Rapture is a utopia that is focused on complete liberty , but the word to keep in mind here is 'utopia', and a popular theme in culture is how a utopia can degenerate into a dystopia. These ideas sound good on paper, but human nature will always get in the way and screw things up inevitability. This is how I see it though. The developers didn't really take too much time to flesh out the background too well, imo. It seems half-way through the game they said "fuck it" and went on with the game play.
*Poast Toast*
Well written, concise and accurate discussion. I commend thee sir.
The city started breaking down because of parasites, human parasites. Toss in a bit of plasmids and adam and you got yourself a struggle for power. Then again, even if there were no plasmids and adam to fight over, humans will ultimately fail in making a flawless city because, well, face it; they're only humans.

Nope.
It would be cold as fuck let me tell you that.
Stand in a tunnel and fuck with whales till they crash into rapture and destroy the entire city.
Half the people that have post have missed the point of the thread.
Half the people that have post have missed the point of the thread.
Considering the OP missed the entire point of Bioshock, i'd say that's fair.
As MercZ said, a full out libertarian society such as Rapture, would result in too wide a gap between rich and poor, which would then result in dismay amongst the lower classes, and later on, revolt. Also, just in case anyone hadn't noticed yet, Andrew Ryan = Ayn Rand.
I was thinking about a city, based off military standard; it sounds like a stupid idea, but if you think about it, it sounds efficient to me. Everyone has their own barracks in different areas and they choose what job they want to go into. Different people in the society would take different roles and everyone would eat at the same time at their closest eating hall or such. Work that the people need to have done will be done during the hours between breakfast and dinner. I didn't explain that very well, but the point of the society i was thinking was, that it was to be 100% efficient and no one "slacking off" or anything of the type. The major flaw in it may be stress, everyones gonna build up stress and that will cause people to work less efficiently. It's just part of how i like to live, i like when everything is working at it's full potential.
ITT people discuss whether an idea from a film and a game would work in real life
the greatest natural barrier/defense EVER?
Yeah and im sure the waves wont beat the crap out of the city, no not at all.
ITT people discuss whether an idea from a film and a game would work in real life
Totally didn't understand until now, thanks.
It would get all the dumb people who think an underwater city would work in one place so they can be conveniently killed off.
Nothing underwater works very well (Spongebob).

When I think about it (building something like rapute) outerspace would be a far better option
Nothing underwater works very well (Spongebob).
take that back, you sick FUCK!
Well it'd have a nice police force. Would you kindly pickup that can.
the greatest natural barrier/defense EVER?
Volcanoes and Earthquakes? Since these things do somewhat occur under the ocean...
