Someone wrote a long character analysis of John.
http://precisionfstrike.tumblr.com/post/17415257719/character-analysis-01-john-egbert
CHARACTER ANALYSIS 01: JOHN EGBERT.
Let me warn you guys in advance: This, and most of my character analyses, are going to be all sorts of crazy long. Total stats for this character analysis are eight pages, single-spaced, and 4,279 words. I’m not sorry. This is fun. As you might imagine, a monster of this size is going to be hidden behind a cut. So without any further preamble, away we go:
JOHN EGBERT: THE NAME BREAKDOWN.
John. What a name for a main character. John has always been an incredibly popular name for guys; from 1880 until 1924 it was the most popular name for boys (prior to that, it and William regularly exchanged places dating all the way back to 1550), and even after it lost the #1 rank it still took until 1973 for it to fall out of the top five. It’s a Biblical name, usually referring to either John the Baptist, who baptized Christ in the Jordan River, or the apostle John, who wrote the five books of the New Testament. It’s a name with a lot of history, and a lot of character behind it. You’ve got kings and emperors and conquerors and popes, saints and villains and of course your normal everyman too. It’s a name that sees a lot of use in media because of how traditional a name it is.
Which makes it a fitting name for our main character. Much like his name has quite a history behind it, John’s got a hell of a past as well, from his origin until his deaths. The history of rulers bearing the name also means that it’s pretty fitting for someone who grows into the Heir, wouldn’t you say? He’s got a lot to live up to, and he has a name that carries those same expectations.
Egbert is an Anglo-Saxon name meaning “Bright Edge.” For the most part it doesn’t have so much in the way of significance, especially given that these first few names were fan-generated. However, there’s one pretty remarkable story that relates to John Egbert’s name, and that is the tale of James Dallas Egbert III, which I expect most people already know about. Egbert was a student at Michigan State University who, years ago, was said to have disappeared into the steam tunnels underrunning the campus for “reasons related to the role-playing game” D&D. This was later proven to be false, but it certainly makes for a great story. Perhaps the namesake isn’t entirely fitting (John certainly seems to have a much sunnier outlook on life than Egbert did), but the connection between a D&D player and the character of John Egbert seems to be a pretty neat parallel.
ghostyTrickster & ectoBiologist
All of the pesterchum handles are evocative of the character they represent. John’s are pretty easy to decipher: his initial name, ghostyTrickster, combines two of his interests: Ghostbusters and the study of practical jokes. His second handle, ectoBiologist, is directly lifted from his conversation with Terezi, wherein she tells him he’s a disgrace to the field of ectobiology. This second handle obviously foreshadows his role as the ectobiologist in the kids’ session, even if when he made the name he didn’t know the significance of it.
Interestingly enough, we might also note that John’s initial handle, ghostyTrickster, may have foreshadowed his grandmother’s role as his spiritual guide in Sburb—she is certainly a ghost, given her resurrection via the kernelsprite, and is shown several times to enjoy the prankster’s gambit the same way John does (hoo hoo hoo!).
FIRST IMPRESSIONS.
My first impressions of John as a character were… not stellar. I didn’t outright dislikehim, as he’s far too much of an ingénue character to keep from endearing himself to me in some way, but he was just. Eh. Part of this was because of the silliness of his introduction—retrieve arms, place arms on cake, eject the cake from your sylladex into the toilet… that’s not really my type of humor, and unfortunately that reflected on John as a character, particularly upon statements such as “This definitely makes the CAKE at least 300% more hilarious.” He was there, he was the character that didn’t understand what was going on, he was the one who sat and nodded and went “okay!” while the rest of his friends made all of the decisions and played an active role in their own worlds.
As we progressed through the plot, this was a pretty common theme: while Dave exploited time loops and Rose learned everything she could about the game in order to later break it to hell and back, John was just kind of bumbling around, accidentallying the correct moves. Karkat mentions at one point that John doesn’t even understand how the game works, even after he’s reached god tier. John keeps getting rewarded and progressing further, without the same challenges that a lot of the other characters are being faced with. I definitely didn’t dislike him, but he wasn’t my favorite either, considering how things just kind of fell into his lap.
That changed.
THE INGÉNUE PERSONALITY.
So let’s discuss John’s personality. At bare basics, I would describe him as the male equivalent of an ingénue. What is an ingénue? The ingénue is a character that can be found in most plays/shows: they’re the naïve, innocent characters that expect the best when meeting somebody new. They’re young, they’re impetuous, they want everything to work out so that everybody’s happy and look to resolve conflict if it’s at all possible. Most main characters do start out as ingénues—it gives them somewhere to go. Characters like Christine in Phantom of the Opera, Johanna in Sweeney Todd, Giselle in Disney’s Enchanted (hell, most of the Disney princess could be considered these, to an extent), Sandy from Grease, Kairi in the Kingdom Hearts franchise and Yuna in Final Fantasy X… the list goes on and on. They’re always a little bit too naïve for their age, and you wonder how they’ve managed to go so long without learning about some of the darker workings of the world. John may curse (which is something you rarely see an ingénue do), but he’s warm, and open, and wears his heart on his sleeve—we don’t see too much in the way of negatives from him. They’re there, certainly, but he doesn’t let them affect him, instead choosing to remain happy. This is important, here: he choosesto remain optimistic and upbeat, even when he has every reason to fall into depression.
John’s hopefulness is one of his most defining qualities. He chooses to believe in other people. He chooses to believe that there’s a way to escape the Scratch. He believes that no matter what happens in the game, no matter what obstacles are thrown their way, they’ll be able to come out on top in the end. After all, he’s got Rose and Dave and Jade in the medium with him, and all of the trolls are helping too. With so much manpower, how can they not succeed? John doesn’t think about what might happen if they fail—not because failure isn’t an option, but just because it doesn’t really occur to him that theycan fail. They might suffer setbacks, but that’s just another step in the journey. At the end, they’ll emerge victorious. It’s just how life works, to him. Consider this example:
EB: oh, rose, did you know that we are supposed to be creating a universe with this game?
TT: Yes.
EB: i think that’s pretty neat!
TT: It is, in principle.
TT: But it won’t happen.
EB: so you believe the trolls then?
TT: It’s not a matter of believing them.
TT: The writing is on the wall. Literally.
EB: it is?
TT: This session was never meant to bear fruit.
TT: It’s barren, so to speak.
EB: that’s a bit of a bummer!
EB: i am still skeptical about that, though.
Rose is absolutely positive that there’s no way they could have created a new universe through this session. “The writing is on the wall,” she says. It’s not a matter of thinkingthat it is or isn’t barren. She knows, she’s seen it spelled right out. But John still refuses to believe that. After all, if this session is barren that means there’s no way for them to win. And that’s just not possible.
This is also pretty illustrative of how simple John is. After all, it’s easy for us to understand the barren session, and to accept it as fact. Sure, that sucks, but hey, shit happens. This game isn’t meant to be nice to its players. However, for John, it’s pretty tough, because isn’t the main point of the game to win? How could a game be purposely designed to be unwinnable like that? That goes against how games work, so therefore it can’t be true. In a similar vein, there’s also that line I quoted earlier:
JOHN: it’s nice to see rose looks better.
JOHN: last time i saw her, she looked really grim.
JOHN: and also, dark.
When he originally made this statement I responded with a macro of Captain Obvious, but it’s because of that direct simplicity that he’s so endearing to a lot of readers. With John, there aren’t layers and layers of complexities as with other characters (I am looking at you Rose and Dave). He says what he thinks. That’s it. He doesn’t worry about sounding silly, he doesn’t worry about if he’s being witty enough or interesting enough, and he doesn’t feel pressured to behave in any specific way in order to make himself more appealing to his friends. That’s an extremely enviable quality, no matter how old you are, and the fact that John is only 13 and is this at ease with himself is actually quite incredible, and demonstrative of his surprising maturity for his age.
At thirteen years old, I would expect John to be focused more on discovering himself. Boys at that age think they’re badass and are convinced that they’re the only ones who have ever faced their sorts of problems. This is right near puberty (hell, a lot of boys won’t even hit puberty for two or three more years, depending on how quickly or slowly they mature), when a boy is discovering everything about himself. Finding Dad’s Playboy magazines? Playing first-person shooters and teabagging other players on Halo? That wouldn’t surprise me at all. Swearing every other word just because he can? Okay. Claiming to be some badass sort of hacker when in reality all he’s doing is DDoSing the latest target? Seems legit. Add that to the customary jacking off in the bathroom/bedroom/basement stair/balcony/wherever is convenient and abandoned at the time, and that’s what I’d be more likely to expect from a character of this age.
(Disclaimer: Not all thirteen-year-old boys are like this. Having never been one myself, I can only work off of what I’ve seen through siblings. These are gross generalizations.)
At any rate, my point here is that John is remarkably mature for a thirteen-year-old boy. He types without chatspeak and lol all over the place, and is able to communicate what he’s thinking simply and clearly. That section he writes in Rose’s FAQ is actually damn impressive! He’s very smart, but it’s just an inherent part of who he is, not something he tries to flaunt as often as possible. Again: he’s comfortable with himself, and doesn’t feel as though he needs to make sure the world knows how brilliant he is.
Going back to that maturity business, John shows time and time again that he is much more mature than I originally gave him credit for. After all, he seems pretty silly at the get-go; first you’ve got his seemingly-irrational hatred of all things Betty Crocker, and then the mental breakdown to finding that his dad is in fact just a normal businessman. Both of those paint him as being just a kid still! But compare that with how he reacts when he’s got a goal in mind. These four panels here are a pretty good example of how John knows how to get serious when the situation calls for it. He may be dorky the majority of the time, but when it’s time to get down to business he can buckle down and pull some seriously impressive shit out of his hat. Let’s consider also his reaction upon finding his dad and Rose’s mom after Jack’s done with them. That is not the face of somebody who doesn’t understand the severity of what’s been done there. He understands, fully comprehends what Jack’s done, even if not necessarily why, and he’s going to make him pay for it. This is one of those moments where John really discovers how cruel the world can be and, instead of shattering in response to it, he reinforces himself and goes on the offensive. He does not shy away from the challenge.
That’s the thing about John, it’s where he splits off from being an ingénue. Ingénues are traditionally pretty passive characters: perhaps they’re active for a short period of time, but it’s really the characters around them that take all of the action and move the story forward. Cosette (of Les Misérables) becomes Jean Valjean’s ward and falls in love with Marius—she doesn’t do much else. But their relationship is what drives Jean to join the students at the barricade and do so much to keep Marius alive. In contrast, John certainly provides impetus for multiple characters, but when the action really starts falling into place, he doesn’t fade away. He steps up and proves himself to be just as capable as any of the other characters are, strong enough to more than hold his own and, in fact, to surpass the echeladder entirely and hit god tier. The same inner strength that allows him to be confident enough in himself to be so open and simple with other people translates to fighting power, and damn if his powers as a fully realized Heir of Breath aren’t impressive. He’s strong, perhaps stronger than any other character in the entirety of Homestuck is: he’s got a strong heart, a strong sense of self and worth, and that translates into offensive strength as well.
It’s because of all of this that John is a fantastic leader—because he’s so open and confident himself, other people feel as though they can put their trust in him. What we look for in a good leader isn’t somebody who necessarily makes all of the right choices, but someone we feel confident in. A good leader is someone you can put your trust in, someone open. They may have their skeletons in the closet (Karkat’s blood color, for example), but you also know that they don’t have any plots or schemes going on behind everybody’s backs, you know that they’re not using you as a pawn in a game—at least, not without your permission! John doesn’t even see himself as a leader:
TT: That’s why you’re our leader, John.
EB: huh?
TT: Optimism through stalwart skepticism is a defect not everyone is lucky enough to be cursed with.
EB: that’s stupid.
EB: i’m not your leader, i am your FRIEND, there is a BIG difference!
Big difference, indeed. But at the same time? Not so much. John is their friend, but he is also their leader, even if he doesn’t want to accept that. He is not their friend because he is their leader, he is their leader because he is their friend. John brings people together, and a big part of that is because he can find something to like about everyone. He likes talking with Karkat just as much as he enjoys talking with Jade, or chatting with Vriska as much as with Dave, but in every case it’s for an entirely different reason. I mentioned earlier that he chooses to believe in other people—he chooses to believe in them, and to see the best in them. He doesn’t rush into snap decisions when he comes to people; Vriska is a perfect example of this. She confides in him, tells him how she’s killed people and how she even was responsible for the creation of Bec Noir, but he doesn’t turn away from her. He listens, and takes in what she tells him about her life and how troll society works, and he comes to a conclusion based on that information. He chooses to believe that she is truly repentant for what she’s done, and to imagine that from there on out, she’s going to take the higher road. John’s open-mindness and simplicity make him easy to talk to, easy to confide in, and because of that he’s never at a loss for friends. Remember how easily he befriends WV and even Clubs Deuce. The ease with which he deals with all different types of people is an important quality in a leader, and it’s a big part of why he’s so effective as one.
Now, by this point we’ve built John up to be some paragon of goodliness, the shining example of how to be a perfect human being.
He’s not.
I mentioned way back under my initial impressions that John is a very passive character, and that’s not something that stopped being true throughout the rest of this analysis. John is extremely passive when it comes to his surroundings, and we see this illustrated time and time again. The easiest example of this is after he and grimdark Rose encounter and are killed by Bec Noir atop the castle’s tower. After coming back to life, he kisses her on Vriska’s instructions, and later asks of Karkat:
EB: do you know if rose is ok?
EB: did it work???
CG: SHE’S FINE.
CG: SHE WOKE UP ALIVE ON DERSE.
EB: really??
CG: THAT’S THE RULE, JOHN. YOU KISS A DEAD PLAYER IN TIME, AND THEIR DREAM SELF TAKES OVER, ASSUMING THEY STILL HAVE ONE.
EB: oh, wow.
CG: IT’S INCREDIBLE YOU REACHED GOD TIER STATUS WITHOUT EVEN UNDERSTANDING THE MORE MUNDANE MEANS OF RESURRECTION AVAILABLE.
I’m inclined to agree with Karkat here. How is it that you could progress this far in the game without learning how it works? Now, some of you will disagree with me here—“But PFS!” I can hear the asks already. “John had never been placed in a situation where he would have needed to know that information! You can’t fault him for not having learned something that has had no bearing on his adventure thus far.”
Oh, yes I can.
If you were teleported into some strange new universe where you were expected to fight your way through what had originally started out as a glorified real-life version of The Sims with no idea as to what your ultimate goal was now that the world you’d lived on for the past thirteen years of your life had been destroyed, what would your first course of action be? Moving past the sudden shock and trauma you’d surely undergo (which all of the characters in this comic somehow manage to avoid, but I can’t fault Hussie for that one as it would have been an ordeal to slog through), you’d need to figure out where you now were and what your goals should be. Enter the (hopefully) prototyped kernelsprite! Whose entire purpose is to be infuriatingly vague and not reveal to you all of the specificities of the adventure you’re about to embark on.
I don’t know about you, but the next thing I’d be doing was trying to dig up any and all information about the game mechanics I could. After all, this shit is now real—if I die, there’s no resetting from the last save point. There’s no “try again.” I want to know exactly what I’m supposed to be doing, what the dangers are, and if there are any ways of avoiding death, you had best believe I want to know what they are.
John? Does none of this. He doesn’t actively try to understand the game, doesn’t really have a plan and scheme of his own. He may have a goal in mind (“I want to find out what happened to my dad,” for instance), but he doesn’t pursue it with everything he has, he allows himself to be distracted pretty easily. John seems to see Sburb as a gamestill, to approach it with the same lightheartedness he would any other video game. I’d even argue that he is actively trying to keep that pretense up, and that he’s thrown up a hasty wall against anything that may tamper with that ideal. Is this him trying to be strong for his friends? Perhaps. But it’s also a dangerous game to play. By trying not to acknowledge the mounting proof of Sburb being a lot more real than he originally thought, John is running a risk of every new reveal being the one that breaks through those mental walls and causes the reality of his situation to sink in. And if you’ve ever had something like that happen before, then you’ll know that the resulting breakdownis not pretty. John has a very strong sense of how the world works, and when something comes along to prove that everything he thought he knew is wrong, he does not react well. When he jumped down into his father’s room and discovered that Dad wasn’t some lackadaisical street-performer but was instead just a normal, boring businessman, he went so far as to wind up rocking back and forth on his father’s bed because he couldn’t handle the inversion of what he’d always thought was true. When something finally breaks through his mental walls and John’s forced to confront the reality that his father is dead, and isn’t the untouchable man he’s always been, he’s going to be a mess.
Fortunately, John’s shown no qualms when it comes to talking about his emotions. So at least when he finally does break down, he’ll have an outlet for it.
Now, this by no means insinuates that John isn’t adaptable. He’s proven himself to be extremely adaptable! But John tries to put the bad stuff out of mind, instead of dealing with it as he comes. This is his biggest flaw, because it keeps him from seeing the entire picture and being able to react with respect to that. He isn’t a fantastic planner, because he can’t fathom failure and so create the necessary contingencies for those circumstances. His simplicity in how he views the world can work against him—people don’t act in accordance with his principles. If John had it his way, the whole world would be full of nice people who understood and respected one another, and everybody got along well without any need for violence or backstabbing or gigantic overarching plots shrouded in secrecy and destruction and self-sacrifice—unfortunately, the worlddoesn’t work that way, and while his simple optimism is incredibly endearing to other people, it also makes it very easy to manipulate and take advantage of him, because he won’t question your motives. John is trusting to a fault and would follow you right to his grave; hell, he even does—twice! He’s not someone you necessarily want at the steering wheel, even if everything he does is well-intentioned.
Throughout the game John is frequently referred to as a hero—Jade tells him that he’s “becoming a famous hero,” while Vriska is constantly pushing him toward becoming and later acting his part as a hero. Initially John steps into this role with little hesitation, but he’s beginning to learn that being a hero is nothing at all like it’s cracked up to be. It’s not glory and fanfare all the time, it’s difficult and it’s painful and it’s having to come to terms with loss and being unable to save everyone he wants to. John begins this game as a sweet, naïve kid who’s excited to play a game with his best friends, but he’ll be ending this game as something much, much more. He’s fighting to retain his innocence now, but already he’s a bit more serious than when the game began (…a bit), and that’s going to be a path he continues down.
It’s going to be very interesting to see if and how John has changed over the three years between walls. He’s already a full-fledged Heir of Breath, but will he have the mentality now? Or will three years of (relative) peace have allowed him to regress to the dork who was waiting at his window for a beta that hadn’t come and using jokes like putting fake arms into a pink-frosted birthday cake?
One thing’s for sure: Once he makes it into the new session, it’s going to be go-time.
REVISED OPINIONS.
Okay, so when I began Homestuck, I didn’t have the highest opinion of John. He was too cutesy, unrealistic, and I wasn’t sure if there was going to be much more to his personality than raging dorkface who will never get laid. Did this change?
You’d better believe it did.
There is a lot more to John than I initially thought, and I’m actually kind of surprised at how much I enjoy his character. John is (pardon the pun) a breath of fresh air, a character archetype that really doesn’t pop up that often. He’s an ingénue, sure, but he goes way beyond that and becomes a realistic character with his origins in a stereotypical model. John is adorable while still having an edge to him, manages to be open and gullible and naïve without being overwhelmingly, annoyingly so.
Having finished catching up to Homestuck, do I like John? The answer is resoundingly yes.
hopefully hussie WILL have him finally break down and wise up to the reality of things, but i'm not holding my breath.
maybe if he meets scratch-dad and realizes that he's not exactly the same person when he's not recognized as his son

therefore realizing that dad as john knew him is gone for good
