Damn dubstep. It's really amazing to see how graphics progressed even though character animation, hair and face rendering and physics leaves much to be desired.

I mean hell, look at Half Life 2, the facial animations are fucking top notch, even for today, and if you want a more modern example take a look at the faces in Dead Space 3. imho they're really damn nice and the detail in all of the facial movements is fantastic
I loved the transitions between the mgs games.
Look, problem is, we don't have computers yet able to run unbiased light simulations in real time, and we won't for the next 10 years. That much I'm willing to bet. So yeah no games won't look like that on PC. And also that's a horribly oversaturated picture at the top.
I don't even give a fuck how "Stupid" my post sounded. What does real time light have to anything? We already have some really DECENT real time simulations, it sounds pretty stupidly pessimistic to say "Oh they'll never improve", ESPECIALLY when you see what we had 10 years ago. its going to look like that, regardless of how "Real time" its light and water is. And horribly oversaturated? Wow, that sounds OFFLY familiar to many many games anyways, and so what? I was trying to basically say it'll pretty much look like real life because right about now it pretty much does. Once you already achieve realism with a small box, the only way is bigger, with even more realism in a bigger area, It doesn't have to be any of this "real time" shit, I never said that, it just has to look good.
Is it bad that I can't really tell the difference between ps3 and ps4 graphics? The xbone is even worse. If you told me what they were showing was running on a 360 I wouldn't think twice.
How good a game looks depends of course on several things, but I'm sure this plays a part in making the change of graphics appear much slower :

Would you look at all those dead franchises ?

The transition between MGS games, and that TINY little MGS game over sting as the video finished.
Because uncanny valley, shading, animation and physics.
if you also look back at "The best we could do" many years ago... then compare it to now, you'll see that even if we hit a slow down, it obviously can only improve

I can't wait until the PS4 is late into its life and the graphics are as noticeable as the PS2 going to late PS3
the thing is even though the new consoles will be able to handle much better graphics, all that we have right now is what we regard as "current-gen" graphics. It'll be a few years before developers really start to push the limits of what the PS4 and XBone can do and develop new game engines, so right now all the devs can really do is up the resolution and add some fancy shaders and lighting effects.
Exactly. Early games from this current generation compared to later titles are an two completely different levels of graphical fidelity.
Can't wait for Deadly Premonition 2.

The polygons don't seem to have proper edge flow at all and the model isn't animated. That 60k model should be significantly more detailed than that.

Except on xbox with halo 1 and gamecube with mario sunshine, i was stunned by the graphic back in 2001
What game is that between spiderman and prototype 2? The guy has no shirt on and some hospital style pants and it looks like he has some kind of powers?
What game is that between spiderman and prototype 2? The guy has no shirt on and some hospital style pants and it looks like he has some kind of powers?
Second Sight, created by the Timesplitters devs. It's a third-person action game on the PS2, a mix of shooting with stealth and puzzle-solving filled with psychic powers and an.. Odd, storyline.
Call of Duty 2 on 360 didn't look that ground breaking when it came out, I remember people saying the same things at the 360 launch that people do now.
I think one of the biggest improvements will be anti-aliasing. That's one thing i really notice between PC and PS3. As mentioned above, Killzone for PS4 already matches any top end PC shooter out at the moment. Imagine the future!

Here's a good video explanation
Because videogames even to this day do a LOT of "cheating" to get around reality's complexity. Here's a good video explanation
I don't care how many short cuts they take, so long as it looks realistic, and even if it feels like current game... and yes, we need the hardware to run it. Well its a good thing that they're going to MAKE the hardware to run it and I guess I AM exaggerating but just let me be hopeful :v: at the same time, they'll just develope better ways to make games photorealistic, shortcut or not. though, it'll probably slow down until they just have super cheap and easy methods of creating many shortcuts. that being said, artstyle shits on realism, but for games like, assassins creed, farcry, realism is much more fitting, despite the unrealism
Let's not forget of course that with good designers, some of the best looking games of this gen could come out within the first 1-2 years. Anyone remember Valkyria Chronicles? Came out not even two years after the PS3 and graphics wise it's aged pretty damn well with the exception of a few spots where it has worse aliasing issues than GTA4. Then of course there was Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2, which looked pretty damn god-tier and were only about two years after the PS3 came out. Hell, I wasn't even paying attention as I was flipping through TV channels and stumbled upon Spike showing footage of a cutscene from Uncharted 2, and at my distance from the TV I could have sworn they were talking about an upcoming movie, not a PS3 game.
I don't think anyone can really imagine how mid-late gen PS4 games will look like. At least personally, every gen convinces me that it's gonna be hard to top that level of realism, and well, a generation later, I am baffled by how I would've thought that. Right now we only have late-gen PS3 games to compare to early-gen PS4, so I am really excited how far visuals and gameplay will push itself this gen with the new hardware.
Games will also become smoother for the new generation since framerate should be higher now
I don't think so. At first yeah but just like this gen people will decide to make the trade between graphics and framerate and will usually go graphics.
