It really wasn't if you look it up. They didn't have the population to sustain such a massive landmass(only 700 out of 40,000 inhabitants of Alaska were Russian at the time), they were broke and they feared risking it to the British following the Crimean War. So it was basically either sell a relatively worthless piece of land to the U.S. or risk losing it to the British Empire.

If they had known that many of the resources(oil, gold, etc) would later become valuable/accessible as technology progressed, I'm sure they would've done everything in their power to keep it.
