hanging with friends
[editline]30th April 2014[/editline]
and it is law
I'm in London on Monday for an unknown amount of time, going solo though since all I want to do is walk around and take photos. Got an air mattress strapped to my pack in case I need to find someone's floor to sleep on but I wouldn't bother you guys. I'll come back.
London sounds like a core
I got my flickr photo books today! Overall the quality is decent, their printing methods did a little bit of noise reduction and increased contrast which sucks, but for $10 they look pretty nice and I'm sure most people would not notice (for $35 though I would not be happy). The covers though are incredibly high quality and look absolutely top notch. Overall it's nice to have, and for the deal I am happy with what I have received. They will make a good memento of my earlier photography work.

mechanical engineering, yo
[editline]30th April 2014[/editline]
unless i failed this exam, in which case it will be called "engineering studies" v:v:v
im getting concerned because my grades are turning to shit the closer I get to the end of the year and none of my 4 core subjects are good
ugh fuck this school year I cant wait until its over
i never really make a big deal over doing bad on something school wise and cant tell if thats good because it stops me from getting stressed over everything or bad because then it feels like im just getting whatever I get and not trying to improve
the only classes I do good in are spanish (because the teacher makes the class easy and actually teaches) and creative thinking based electives that i take (film and industrial design aka designing and building shit)
i mean im in that alternative learning type thing next year and senior year for ~creative thinkers~ like me but I hate a majority of the kids in it since they all are like weird hipster fucks that wear harry potter glasses and drink chia seed water
now that I think of it I should have taken up my moms offer to do boarding school but I couldnt see leaving all my friends

I went to St. John a really long time ago and it was honestly really nice and well developed etc.
You'll be upset if you don't bring it.
I went when I was like 12 or 13, I walked around with my head buried in my DS the whole time.
It's really tame.
From what I remember it was basically a big harbor for cruise ships, though I'm sure if you can dig past the tourist traps it has it's own identity.
i just feel like walking around with a $1500 camera screams "hey im sorta rich yo, come take my shit"
not to mention im pretty skinny and just an easy target for anyone that wants to make a quick buck.
maybe im just overthinking it all, i can't decide whats worse.
leaving my camera home
or having it stolen.
wear it in sling formation and carry a knife
when i go through real sketchy areas, i put it in a backpack or something.
Without a camera you'll just end up seeing a bunch of missed shots.
It's really not that bad. It's probably safer than most small towns in the continental US, to be honest.
You've spent all that money on your equipment, why let it sit idle at home?
this advice makes me feel alot better
steve, marley and i were in the absolute most sketchy area of LA ever at night with our cameras and no one even batted an eye
keep it on a shoulder strap and behind you, don't make a deal of it and people won't pay much attention

quick city tips (from ~crime famous~ Chicago)
don't feel like you're guaranteed to get mugged. Once you've been out and about for a short while, you'll start to understand that pretty much everyone outside has something to do or somewhere to go. It's rare to find an experienced thief looking for goods, and rarer to come across a hapless idiot who thinks he might make a buck. STILL, follow these recommendations:
• don't dangle it around your neck like an old person. I sling it over one shoulder, down and under the opposite arm. Helps to have a hefty old camera strap instead of the spaghetti strap you get with your kit. looks (and is) harder to yank loose/break. Resting your arm on top of it or having your hand on it like you're ready to draw at a moment makes it even more secure looking and feeling.
• take bare essentials, camera bags are obvious. Most street photos I end up taking are spur of the moment shots and I wouldn't have time to fiddle with lenses anyways, but I tend to take a second if it fits in a pocket somewhere in case I have the time or feel like changing my view for a certain area
• use a small fixed lens if possible, to make the camera harder to notice. Even if it is noticeable, it looks less like a big ol' expensive SLR and more like a cheap film camera. thieves know to go for good electronics and won't bother if they're knowledgeable about what kind of camera stuff to look for.
• don't gawk; people staring straight up with their cameras out the whole time stick out like a sore thumb. Keep the camera down, look like you're going somewhere, snag a shot if you spot it. You'll know if you're in a comfortable spot to set yourself down for a few minutes and frame stuff up
the chances of anything ever happening to you are rare as is, but making sure you avoid the faux pas of looking like an inept tourist will put you in a much better position to ward off anyone who might be out looking to snag something

adding; looking at st thomas's crime stats, I'm gonna say make sure not to leave anything of value sitting out in a car. break-in theft is a common one, along with domestic/child abuse. (also drugs and murder)
the website states:
[quote]It is a good idea to function as you would back home in an unfamiliar area, with care and caution and with your eyes open. If things do not seem quite right then leave. Keep to well lit areas, even at your hotel. Keep an eye, when driving home at night, on whether any cars seem to be following you. Don't carry a lot of money, passports, multiple credit cards or expensive jewelry. Travel in groups. Visit the Virgin Islands Police Department website for statistical information.[/quote]
After this I'm going to say invest in a mid-range point and click to use when you're not entirely comfortable bringing out the big camera.
Doom and gloom sounding, yes, but from the stats I've found I wouldn't be exceedingly worried if you're not going too far off the beaten path
well i'm there for 8 days and staying in probably the cheapest hotel there is in st thomas (trying to save money) so i would feel alot more comfortable taking the camera with me everywhere. the hotel isn't rated the best and apparently not the safest location.
i'm going with just one other person so being at the beach swimming I would have to leave my camera inside a bag or something.
not gonna be leaving anything in a car, taking a taxi everywhere.
gonna be visiting alot of different places there, won't be hanging out around anywhere but the hotel after 9pm though.
also, when im out taking photos, and i dont want to sling it over my shoulder over and over, i kind of pull it to my side and rest my hand on it, kinda like when one walks through a crowd with a bag resting on one sholder and doesn't want to hit people with it
i literally could not imagine going on a holiday and not bringing my camera

Go to your local drugstore and buy a few disposable camera's, problem solved.
i wish i had the performance of my 6D in a package like a lumix gf2 format that i could literally put in my jacket pocket and take on nights out. whilst not actually physically possible, it's a good thought. so many shots i could have got last night that would have been good even just for my friends to enjoy.
