Hey dudes, was just going over all the stuff I'm bringing to the car show (My first professional gig by myself woop woop) I've got this stuff in my bag, anything else i should bring?: Nikon D70 (17-55mm f/2.8) Fuji X100 Three batteries for the X100 Charger for the D70 Canon AE-1 (50mm f/1.8) 6 Rolls of Fuji Superia, 400 ASA This has to last me three hours at a Car Show. Thoughts?
Fuji X100 Three batteries for the X100
Is the battery life on this really that terrible?
Is the battery life on this really that terrible?
It's not awful but it could be a lot better. Generally one battery lasts me a hiking trip which is around 150 pictures or more. It's just better to be prepared and the batteries take up about as much room as a Zippo, so why not?
Honestly, I wouldn't even bring as much as you're bringing. I can usually get 600-700 shots on one battery with my DSLR, and that would be more than enough. I feel like carrying all that around will just end up being distracting.
Alright, what should I cut out then?
I'd probably just take the Fuji X100.
remember to bring a flash

with trog, you're packing kinda heavy for 3 hours
Someone buy my Sony A7 gear, need the moneys.
im not usually one to vent but im pretty angry so i really need some way to let it out so anyway i had a pretty average day at school or whatever, but then I had english last and my english teacher is the biggest bitch I have ever met, i dont think I hate anyone personally more than her, and she gives us this bullshit assignment to do over the weekend because we couldn't finish it in class due to her shitty planning (besides the fact she hates our class and gives us more homework than the other one), so that got me a bit mad and then on the bus home, its like pouring rain, and the bus driver (different person than normal) is driving down my street and looking at the list and checking every stop to see if people need to get off, and then as shes coming up to my stop I yell (not angrily) "please slow down my stop is here" and she doesnt do anything. as shes passing by my stop "Please, stop" and again right as she blows by "can you please stop the bus now" and then some dude sitting behind me even louder "stop the bus!" and then a girl 3 rows behind the driver "you just passed someones stop" and this deaf bitch keeps driving and finally stops 1/2 a mile down the street, and im forced to walk a 1/2 mile home on an extremely busy road, in the pouring rain, with no sidewalk or room to walk on without being in the road i wish I had said something to her instead of just walking off just to let her know that shes a deaf idiot and shouldn't be a bus driver if she can't hear someone yelling 10 feet behind her, but i just walked off without saying thanks. i hope I have her again soon just so I can let her know she's incompetent at being a bus driver and should quit anyway sorry for lame story [editline]16th May 2014[/editline] also my sister who is clearly capable of driving me home but doesnt passed by me in her car as I was walking down the road and gave me a massive shit eating grin and a wave
builds character
no motivation to continue with university. the only reasons i can see to stay are that it gives me something to do for the next three years, i'll meet people worth keeping in contact with and that i don't want to disappoint my parents who plunged a bit of money just for me to throw it back in their faces.

Why not switch to a class that will compliment your skill set? Graphics design or maybe something like History of Art or Illustration. You know, just something that will be helpful to you as a photographer without making you bored.

I love photography but hate my degree, its just because we're not doing the pinnacle of what we could be doing. Another thing, like bope said, is character building.
i love you rob but yeah, it's what i want to do, but i know i need to start at the bottom on real film sets or in a rental house and work my way up to working as cam ops on stuff or cinematography which is what i'd really like to do.
What are some good photography books to read? I devoured "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson last night and it was really helpful both from a technical and artistic viewpoint. I'm trying to find something else to read - especially something that deals with composition, color, contrast, etc. Any recommendation?
Getting a degree = getting contacts
Getting a degree = getting contacts
thought u meant contacts like contacts vs eyeglasses and was really confused trying to understand the metaphor that didnt exist
i dont know if i mentioned this earlier but i just pulled some serous math skills right out of my ass like, for real, i was going to fail my math class, and instead of worrying or anything i just said "fuck it" and blasted through my tests and homework. I was the first to finish a test 3 tests in a row (which is something ive never done, i absolutely suck at math) and i just wen't to my teach to ask about my grade and if i could still have a chance of passing, and it turns out i aced all of my recent tests!! my final is worth 200 pts and all i need to pass the class is 74!
I swear to god it was a fire alarm during an exam that saved me from failing a computer course that was 100% dry reading.
it's really theraputic to come in from a night with friends, a little drunk and just read all the fp threads i follow and catch up. i love seeing new work and inspiring pics from you guys. gosh keep it up dudes <3
If its a professional gig then don't bring film. I'd just take the D70 and 17-55
Alright, thanks guys.
Pretty much everyone I know who studies a creative subject at uni says they don't think the course is worth the time or money. It goes without saying you'll never actually need the degree itself in that particular creative field, no one will ever ask if you have a degree if your portfolio of work is decent. As Thaard and bopie said the most valuable part of the degree is the contacts and experience you'll get from spending 2-4 years surrounded by people living and breathing the stuff you love doing that being said, it's still a pretty expensive way to do it and plenty of people do fine without it
I plan on getting a degree in photography from a csu (California state university) because the stats say that one most likely won't get a job in what they got a degree in, but they make more money regardless. So basically, I don't expect my college education to get me a photography job, but if what you major is doesn't really matter, I might as well study something I have a passion for.
Just make sure whatever school you plan to join actually can help you grow and has teachers with a good portfolio themselves.
ive heard san francisco state has a great photo department
I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I'm still in community college and I'm thinking about transferring somewhere with a good photo course or something with journalism/photojournalism.
