Going to Eindhoven in a few minutes, I'll see if I can PP a few of my favourite shots on the tain back home.
Long exposure, time lapse (PMed people whose images I used for both of these topics), portraiture (believe it or not I used to be really into studio photography and did some classes on it) and editing. Been upping my editing game very recently. Hopefully I'll be able to get some new shots once I have a camera again.
went on a ~23 mile bike ride with some pals today, was so nice to get out of the city for once. Trying to take photos with a manual focus lens doing 30mph on a bike going downhill is scary scary shit. To get the focus and frame the shot requires taking your concentration off the road and on the subjects and both hands to get the focus and take the shot. I pussied out of taking any shots at that speed. [editline]13th November 2013[/editline] also i hate every photo i take these days, confidence through the floor :(
I feel like I'm taking good photos, but I only likes them. I've been doing photography for 5 years. Why do I feel like I'm not improving?
I feel like I'm taking good photos, but I only likes them.
Don't we all?? xD
I've been doing photography for 5 years. I've been doing all those things :( Most of my pictures are film, its what I shoot with, because my best glass in on my minolta. I think I need to take some editing classes, I'm putting my .nef files into lightroom, messing with the contrast, and the tone curve, lens corrections, and none of it makes the photos look any better to me. There has got to be some sort of formula that is unknown to me
my friend's brother's band posted this yesterday, just thought i'd post it here as the video is pretty fucking cool imho
i cant find the post now but basically it said that if at any point in ur photog career you start seeing your own photos as the pinnacle of amazingness then you're doing something wrong
There's a difference between liking your photo's and thinking your photo's are the pinnacle of amazingness though
Its not that i like my photos so much, thats a bad way of putting it. I think my photos are staying at the same caliber and quality, but what others think of my photos is very unpredictable. One photo people may love, and i post another pic that i think is just as good and no one likes it. I need more structure to how I do photography. I am looking forward to my first college level photo class in the spring.
just keep practicing and learning from the photos that people do like, there's a reason they're responding to those ones. the other ones you like might not be bad, just not as interesting it's pretty darn common for any artist to be confused like that, just get out there and aim to perfect what you like to do, and what others like to see from you. [editline]14th November 2013[/editline] it's hard to know what photos other people might enjoy. they weren't there with you to take that photo, they didn't get to soak in the environment and stuff like that, but it's vivid to you. the only context they have is that photo
I kind of get what you mean in the sense that recently I've started to feel more and more like the photos I've taken have managed to capture and contain the feeling or idea that I wanted them to. Not to say I think they're absolutely mindblowing or something, but I find that they satisfy some part of me, which was not satisfied before. I don't object to that too much, since my primary reason for doing photography is for me; the fact that other people like some of them is a bonus, I guess. Don't expect other people to enjoy everything that you do, as well. I mean, depending on how you do it, photography can give you a means to convey some sort of idea without using words, in a similar way to music. Words are probably the best way we have of conveying something with the least amount of ambiguity (short of using mathematics); what you feel when you look at your own photos isn't only based on the information in the photos themselves, but on your collection of knowledge and your own, past personal experiences, all of which will of course be different for everyone. But obviously that doesn't mean you should ignore criticism from others, it just means you need to be able to work out why exactly you're attached to a particular item--is it something that just pleases you, or is it actually of good quality and will appeal to a certain audience? And as well, there's a distinct difference between being attached to some of your own work for personal reasons, and having an inability to partake in self-criticism. [editline]14th November 2013[/editline] Getting a bit rambly there, I guess what I'm trying to say is that as long as you're still aware of any faults in your own work despite liking it, it's alright. [editline]14th November 2013[/editline] That and, there will never be an exact answer in terms of what do other people like; it depends on the group of people you're trying to target.
i forgot if someone mentioned this earlier, but the photo people need a hang out spot other than here. Here is cool, don't get me wrong, but we need a vid chat room or something.
would be cool but to be honest, due to time differences/comitments it would be quite empty most of the time i guess

I wish I could let a good photography critic look through my photos and give me advice. Hell I would even pay for that. It's not that I dont take advice on the internet seriously it's just that it's rarely more than "I like this photo, I don't like this photo"

We could probably even start a thread dedicated to critiquing
That's not a bad idea actually. I could see it working if you could only post one image at a time or a set based upon a common theme, that way people can concentrate their crit more.
critting images is fun, im game
ugh i dont know how to edit my photos and its killing me...

It's a journey of ~self discovery~. Think about what purpose you are producing your work for, look at photographers that seek similar purpose, review your photos constantly.
it is rare to take a photo with a nikon that i agree with, but i feel i have a higher batting average with my minolta. Why?
it is rare to take a photo with a nikon that i agree with, but i feel i have a higher batting average with my minolta. Why?
You prefer film
The shots have better exposure, focus, color, all that jazz. And I don't try that hard with film. But I take 100 pictures with my digital and I don't think any of them are usable.

It's not that I dont take advice on the internet seriously it's just that it's rarely more than "I like this photo, I don't like this photo"
Why should you take one person's (or a group of peoples') opinion as fact? If you did, you'd just be a manifestation of what they personally think is right. A magazine is going to want journalistic integrity, an internet forum is going to want 'cool tricks'. You need to learn how to recognize which criticism you should take to heart, and more importantly figure out what you want do with photography (your art), and why. This takes years and years - one guy telling you "eh you should do X technique less" is not going to help you, no matter how successful they are. Nobody can tell you what is right for you, do what makes you happy. Listen to the people that are doing something close to what you want to be, but don't treat it as gospel. Begging them to give away their secrets will not work, even for cash. You are competition. Learn to observe. [editline]15th November 2013[/editline] If critics aren't upset by what you're doing, you're going unnoticed.
