The first and only time pics from me have been featured somewhere :(

yay, got my first fotogig next weekend. gonna be shooting footage of my old band(both pix and vid) which I used to play drums in before I moved. I'm thinking 50mm, flash and a stand is all I need?
bring a wider angle too, and a couple of diffusers/gels
50mm is my widest atm since I moved over to full format.. lenses are fucking pricey. drooling on the 35 mm 1.4 sigma though, gonna be the next I'll buy.

Shooting with a flash at a live gig is quite inconsiderate, try using the stage lights to your advantage.
I always get annoyed at flash using photographers at gigs, especially at smaller shows.
Yeah I wouldn't use a flash, it's a bit too distracting for the band. The gig lighting should give you better shots anyway as they will be more dramatic
Yeah, I wasn't intending to use it that much, but they also wanted some backstage band picture-stuff, so I'm taking my precautions.
i had assumed that was what you wanted the flash for, using flash at a live gig just reminds me of cheap inconsiderate photojournalists

using gig lights is so much better too. you can capture the environment so much more effectively than with a solid flash that mutes everything interesting about the photo
Just had my first time losing a batch of important photos. I imported the photos, Lightroom gave me the impression that they had been imported (they were really just displaying on the card apparently even though i clicked import) and formatted the card. The feeling when the pictures just say they are 'missing' is awful. No point feeling bad about it now though since theres nothing i can do. hard lesson to learn but hey. got 2 rolls of 120 film though, so they of course still exist! the wonders of film ay
so, my temp job at the photo lab doing metal prints has been extended to new years, by the end of this i might be able to buy my a7 AND a lens for it!
its been real tough tho, i took today off, but ive been working from 3pm to 2am every day and my body and mind hate me right now. I have about 1 to 2 hours of free time between waking up and going to work
i have never needed caffeine to function, but now i am becoming rapidly caffeine tolerant. a rockstar used to hold me over, and now i need a double shot espresso, one of those huge rockstar hydration/recovery things, and a mountain dew or a cup of coffee.
in the end it will all be worth it...im coming a7!!!

i've lost most if not all of the raw files of my first few photo trips because i didn't know how and where lightroom archived them back then
rip

Didn't know you shoot digital.
Today I again lost one 1/10 of my roll because I forgot the lens cap was on. You may laugh but when you shoot with a rangefinder and the meter doesn't meter through the lens it's pretty easy to forget. Sadly my camera doesn't have a double-exposure feature so I had to advance the film with a heavy heart.
I do the same on occasion

i shoot a lot of digital. shooting more film lately though, none of which i've posted. I'll definitely be posting some 6x7 content in the new year.

Where do you post all your stuff? Or is it ~secret~?
on the flash vs non flash in gig photography topic this is something i made from the same gig
one photographer was using flash and i wasnt.
they have the edge on sharpness i guess but mine has the edge on lighting i guess

Worried about doing the same on my contax, it's very weird not seeing through the lens

Ughhh flash just completely ruins the whole atmosphere that's been set up by the light specialists.
Using flash in an environment where there's plenty of great "natural" light provided by the venue/stage lighting is a big no no, you instantly look very unprofessional and it's distracting to those performing. In some bigger venues using flash is banned completely and will get you blacklisted from taking photos there.
also shots with the stage lighting will nearly always look better, although occasionally you might encounter a venue with absolutely atrocious lighting and you have no choice
the worst are the fools with the big LED panels in their hot shoes.
hey now i can distract you all the time not just when i take a photo!

Yeah seriously.
If these people are wanting to make their video look better they should invest in a steadycam.
club photos and shit need a flash, since there is not really any light about, but at a gig someone is spending fucking ages making thosoe light look good, why shit on it with flat, boring light that just shows every flaw and no atmosphere?
Disagree on the need bit. Yeah there's a bit of a $$ barrier to a low light capable body, but fast primes can be had for cheap, and even entry level bodies are pushing massive ISO's these days. And then for video you're shooting what, 1/30? Shouldn't be too hard here in late 2013. (If you can't afford a newer xxD and a 50 1.8, you probably aren't getting paid for whatever you're doing, and are just being a nuisance with your flash.)
I generally never had to go above 8000 because at that point cellphones and even candles will illuminate the scene enough. I know this is more gear-thread-talk, but the discussion is here.
This was probably the darkest venue (most places i go to are clubs actually, not fully lit gigs) I've been to. Shot at 16000, but my shutter was up at 1/100 at 1.6. Easily could have been 6400 with 1.4 at 1/50. Whole scene lit with a few candles + a dim light bulb or two, and the big glare is someone's iphone.
Just my two cents.
You got the added benefit of shooting with f1.4 primes on a modern FF pro body though.
