nikon said to avoid using anything that physically touches the sensor because if it gets scratched then warranty is done. I might head to one of my local camera stores and see if they sell blowers

My most highly recommended accessory ever
apparently you cant lock up mirror for cleaning unless you have a battery that is "100% charged"
aka my battery that reads 40% when its 100%

btw for reference here is the photo that made me realize it was dusty, idk if this is normal

Sensor dust is normal and most "later gen" digital cameras have a sensor vibration to remove the dust, only problem is that it looks worse than just "dust" looks like something got in when you changed lenses.
[QUOTE=Him1411;43359047]getting annoyed at the fact i have so much work that I just can't even seem to make dents into for uni, has really put a dampener on being home for christmas/christmas in general because most of my time has been spent at my dining table on my laptop trying to work whilst ignoring my family.[/QUOTE]

I know man, I've had that idea in the back of my mind constantly. Also this:

pisses me off thought because i need to do this work but i just sit staring at it because I find it so dull, had it all my life. Getting shouted at by my various teachers/mentors, telling me that I just "need to apply myself more" but that's bullshit, recycled teacher talk.
[editline]30th December 2013[/editline]
well I say I find it dull, that's a bit of a bad way to explain it. I don't exactly find what I am currently doing dull but I find the format in which I have to do my work I don't fit well with. In theory it is completely open ended but I feel more constrained than ever with this work.

That's not too bad, I've come back from worse. You should be able to get most of it with a blower, but some might require a wet swab, which is actually incredibly easy to do. I buy pre moistened ones, just take it and brush the sensor. It's the same thing a camera shop would charge you $70 for. The glass covering the sensor isn't that delicate and can stand the wiping easily.
[QUOTE=Pickwickian-;43358760]Shoulda let me know man. I would have travelled into zone 1 to grab a beer with ya.[/QUOTE]
Wouldn't have had time anyway. Sorry dude.

i think ill just use a blower for now and see how that works, I barely shoot stopped down to something where dust is super visible, and if I do im light painting or something where dust probably isnt visible

its not nearly as bad as I imagined, its mainly in the top left 1/4 of the frame and one spec on the right edge
so my mom (dont laugh) is insisting that I get it professionally cleaned for $50 by my local store. do you think its fair if I say the store/wesbite I got the camera from pay for the cleaning/give me a store credit for them or something

Nah I get it, my mom has given me many a weird look when I take Internet advice haha. They'll do a good job at the shop, and it defers liability so that's nice. I think it's fair to request, cameras should be given dust free but it would be hard to prove fault on them entirely.
For the future just change lenses indoors, aim the camera down when changing, and do a dust blow every now and then.

now that I look back at the first pictures I took with it I definitely see the dust spots. i never even went outside with it period. here is a better picture where you can see all the spots. obviously did a bunch of things in PP to make it as obvious as possible

[editline]31st December 2013[/editline]
they just hung up.....
now im angry
[editline]31st December 2013[/editline]
most credit im prob gonna get is $15
yep, $15 credit
they were like "well sir if we give you $50 for the cleaning we are losing profit" and i said "oh no that would be terrible if you lost profit on one camera to make a customer happy, i hope you dont go bankrupt"
if it's a factory fault why not contact Nikon?? or was it a 2nd hand camera?
because nikon is dumb and cleanings arent covered by warranty even if its dirty from the factory
