Great sounding drums. Might sound even better if you arranged the drums in a more traditional boom bap way.

That was really sexy and chill. I wish your intro was a lot longer. I thought that was the coolest part in its all three seconds of glory.

Also I've been working earlier this week on some background music for a science fiction pen and paper RPG. It's called Eclipse Phase and I have been playing it with my friends for a few months. My GM (Game Master) was talking to me about creating some music for the next session that is coming up. Anyways here is what I've been working on with that.

Nice. those sounds that come in at around 6 min totally remind me of the Aliens soundtrack.

How's this? Added drum complexity in that comes in a little bit into the song (though I'm not sure if it's good), added a better sense of progression to it...I feel like it's better. Not positive, however, that all my changes were for the better, but I'm probably the most satisfied with this song then any of my others (which isn't saying much considering it's one of the few songs I've made so far).
I'm not a fan of the chords you're using in the intro, something more clean and less dissonant (and with a piano overtone) would sound a lot better I think. The almost airy synth that comes in with the drums is beautiful, what's the name of it?
Drums I dig, makes me bob my head along with them. :)
A groovy distorted bass to make the track fuller would be cool, you've definietly got something good going with the drums and the airy synth. The intro synth you're using not so much. I don't know if it is just because of the chords or if the whole sound of it ruins it for me, I would go for some happier chords, maybe an 1-4-7 chord? And piano overtones (as in, layer it all with some good piano vst).
Speaking of piano, I found a really cool chord progression that I can't for the life of me find something to build into beyond that progression, so I decided to make a short little piece:

I really dig this, quite sweet/happy sounding with a kind of wistuful edge, really nice. The melody parts could do with some better volume automation/less roboticness, but it's a great composition! Could see strings working well with it.
I'm working on an instrumental thing for once, and not jazz. It's some weird asiany thing.

Simple progression, but nice little piece. Those chords are this, F# major, A# major, D# minor, and then B major? What you could do to change the progression is go from F# major to A# minor. Another thing that would be a little crazier would be going 2nd inversion B major (F#, B, D#) to 1st inversion E minor (G, B, E) if you really wanted to change the progression. Just a little simple music theory, haha.

I totally agree with your points about automation and less roboticness, I will get to that once I've completed the whole piece since I really don't like how FL handles velocity (or well I do, but it gets really messy since you can so easily mess up with how it is laid out.)
Strings I think would be kickass too, I tried adding some with a vst someone recommended but I can't get them to sound good enough for it to work.:(
Your track I love, goddamn does it sound like something Frank Klepacki would do, like an exact carbon copy. The only thing that would elevate this even more is if you had some really, really crazy metalsolo during the heavy part, the rest? Close to perfection. Make a thread for this track when it is finished and I'd love to buy it too, godfunk this is some good shit!

Very much correct on the chords! I gave it a try and it ended up with adding another progression that just goes B to D#, with the bass doing some alterations to keep it fresh. :)

(Added bonus is now it can loop pretty well!)

I really like this! Though I think you should make it a bit more like the previous version by lowering the higher frequencies on the piano, it makes it sound more soothing IMO.

I actually really like this, the singing isn't bad, I think it fits the song well. I'd make the drums a bit more powerful though in some parts. Nice track, would play again.
Here's something I threw together yesterday, didn't have anything particular in mind so I was surprised it turned out like it did. Have no idea what genre to call it though, it's kind of a mix of hip-hop and dance music I guess? Or maybe it's some kind of ambient?

It's kinda boomy, the bass. Maybe flatten it a bit with an eq. Maybe crank up that organ thing @0.34. Other than that, maybe add some vocal samples around. It always spices things up in my opinion.
I have a song that I think I overcompressed and probably messed up the low end on. Maybe because I am only mixing with a headset now..

I totally agree with you, the piano there is really harsh (partly because of the piano I chose, partly because it has no dynamics at all with it going 100% all the time and partly because of some EQing I did to try and get out those higher parts for easier composition) and I've now done something about it. :)
That intro on your first song is really nice! Gets me into the mood almost immedietaly, as for the lyrics I can't tell what you're singing most of the time but I really like the effect you have on it!
Do you also sing that high or have you been fiddling with octaving it?
As already mentioned the drums are really drowned out right now, that can be solved by fleshing out all the various instruments however.
I would recommend by starting with highpassing every instrument that doesn't work as a bass, there's no magic frequency where you should cut but I would recommend starting at 100hz, then going higher and higher until you notice that the instrument starts to sound bad, dial back a bit then and settle for that.
Another trick you can do is to sidechain the bass to the kick, have it duck down the bass with every kick with just a tiny marginal, enough so that the kick pushes it down but not enough to create a sidechain effect (it'll sound like the bass is playing a backbeat when it is too much).
It also sounds like you have a lot of frequencies fighting for room near 3-5khz, I think deciding whether the voice or the synths should have that spot would help clean up the mix a lot!
The second track has a bit better mix, and the vocals are nice :) The same issues are on this track however, there's a lot of sounds near the vocal range and you could probably let the main synth dial back a bit there and maybe occupy the 500hz-2khz range, and some of the treble?
I like your vocals, they remind me of cruxshadow and eurythmics!

It sounds more dance than those other genres, more weird sounds and small bits of synth playing melodies could really make this one pop! As for the length I think you could probably scale it back a bit if you want to have the groove go on and on, or add more elements to it. Maybe a strong lead synth with a nice melody? :)

Yeah there's definietly some low end missing, dialing back on the compressor and doing something about the bass and you've got a really nice thing going! Maybe have some part(s) where things dial down?
I think 2:24 could be a part where things quiet down, especially the lead synth on the right channel! The vocal sample is slick as shit, nice work!
If this had some dynamics it would be definietly a hit I think, you have some really good sounds going on :)

A high octave guitar doing just single notes during the solo part could be a killer thing to have I think! Maybe add a part after 2 minute mark where shit just breaks down completely, double basskick and shit like that?

It does doesn't it? Never truly reflected over it, but yeah it is definietly about that! I got immensly inspired by a peaceful breakup with my (now) ex girlfriend, and it has that feel about it for sure.
I like the sounds you have, and the kick! That is a REALLY nice kick, is it a homemade sample or?
Only thing I can think of is that hihat, but that is purely because I personally think it has been too used in psytrance without any modifications.
Honestly I really like the track, it stays fresh throughout the whole time (and 10 minutes, dang!)
It has a slight Kavinsky feel to it, which I think is fantastic because Kavinsky is one of my favourite composers.
How did you make that bass? I would love to know. :)

I think something along the lines of what I have going in this song :
https://soundcloud.com/skriket/under-the-sun-instrumental
Starting at 1:03
A groove along those lines could perhaps work? Or have that intro part repeat, and fade out, maybe add some synths á Klepiacki

i really like the way the synths come through on this track. that reese that appears occasionally, i think put a number of effects on it to widen and saturate it a bit. some unison and saturation would do wonders to make it fill the track up. also the the drum loop doesn't really hold the rhythm as well as it could in my opition, those hats that fill the gaps either need to be louder or replaced with some (subtle) amen break of some kind imo, great work on everything else though.

All the sounds I used are coming with the Yamaha MM6, which is a kinda spinoff from their MOTIF-series. It has a lot of good presets which can be modified rather easily. If you want I can send ya the MIDI-data for this specific bass via PM (Kickdrum is just a standard sound, unmodified).
Please do! :)

This is really chill, and cool! You should definietly let the bass come forward more, let it peek through like it does at 0:32 :) You have a good opportunity for it to do something sweet at 0:44, when the drums end for instance.
Personally I think the thing that starts near the minute mark should come quicker, it could probably come even as early as 0:44!
It's really well mixed so there's nothing that can be changed in the frequency spectrum I think! I look forward to hearing more of this for sure. :)

Is that clipping at 0:03 and 0:06? It sounds like it to me and it bothers me, you should check it out and see if the samples or sounds do that.
I'm digging this track, it has a very nice flow to it! The part with only bass is beautiful and builds up perfectly with more and more things coming in, such as the strings and the almost industrial sounds.
Personally I would have the drums come in a bit earlier, maybe have a drop too at 1:50 to really punctuate the introduction of the drums? There's a high frequency on the "scrap metal" sound too that makes it hard for me to crank up the volume, I like the overcompressed sound of most of the things too.

Some small parts sound like they're out of tune somehow, but it's generally a good piece IMO. Unfortunately I don't know why the off-tune sounds happen. Maybe you should improve on the scales a bit or adjust the sound. Overall, it's quite nice, reminds me of some Daft Punk song if it was covered in piano.
Anyway, I just released recently a single, pretty short one though. The first song IMO was thought to be redone in some different way, but your opinion is up to all of you. The second one, honestly, is quite better than its original, given that it is a remix of my "me vs mashup alias" song.
Coincidentially, the second one samples a Rick and Morty episode, on behalf to the original, where it plays the source of the sampled acapella. You'll know what it is.
Plus, if you want to download it free, go ahead. If you like it, you're still able to donate me a bit if you want to with the download and stuff.

Glad this thread is still going strong, I've been mostly absent due to school and all that jazz, not to mention that I've gotten no inspiration to write a piece of awhile. That being said, I'd like to mention that I am going to be taking courses over the winter and summer to become a Pro Tools certified instructor. I'll take two courses over the winter break and two more over the summer break.
I cannot wait for this experience and I'm so excited for my musical career to begin taking off in a new direction. Hopefully I can start checking this thread out more often, but if I can't then best wishes to all of you guys!

Ya some notes are definietly sour, I need to learn to stop working on tunes from time to time to get some fresh ears so I can pick that up instead of thinking "yeah this sounds ok". :)
I like the first track until the vocal sample comes in, I can only think of where it is originally used and always expect to hear the beat that is on that track. The distorted sound is pretty sweet, you should make a track where that one's used as a tight heavy lead! The kick is pretty damn good too, nice work!
Second track? Love it! Really good combination and a nice beat to go with it :) Is that Xzibit that comes in later? Nice combination there too, and interesting volume automation too! I've only listened to the tracks on my headphones, it sounds really good (both of the tracks) mix-wise.
Can't say I like the turn of events in the second track, it would be really awesome if you had gone back to sampling rick&morty in my opinion!

I just finished a hell of an experiment of noise

I just realized how late I am with the response. Sorry.
This is amazing. How do you get such large textures? How many different tracks are playing over each other? How did you even conceptualize this? I can't think of music even remotely like this.
I can't say that in the second track it's Xzibit, though I don't know who it is, the acapella used was obviously from DMX ("X Gon' Give it to ya"), and that acapella's song was used in that Rick & Morty episode (the one with the Devil's cursed object store, I mean the ending song where [sp]Rick and Summer get ripped as hell and beat the Devil to a pulp, later to some douches like the Westboro guy and the skinhead[/sp]), along with the intro sample. The original was more based on Freddy got Fingered (the ending credits music, "The Real Slim Shady", I think, from Eminem), that's why it's called "sausagecore".
Mostly I pretend to maximize the pumping of the kick drum, so it sounds heavier on headphones. I mostly listen through headphones a lot, and I like a lot the sound of heavy kick drums, specially those that have that "boooooom" effect.
Other samples I used in the second one are Rammstein's "Pussy", in the remix, I also used sound effects from Doom and TF2, and the obvious airhorn, just for the lulz.
There's not a real volume automation there though, all of it is due to a bunch of tweaks in mastering.
I hope this informs you a lot. I'm looking forward to produce similar tracks.

I decided to use a completely different chord progression, this one has a main part with the chords E C G B. :)
I don't really have anything bad to say about this, it's so good.
