The drums are nice but I'm not a fan of the main instrument it sounds really random. I think this could be really improved with a nice sub.

I don't really like the second one but the first and third are really nice. I love the atmospheric pads and sounds in the first one but I think the drums need some work they sound way too 'sampley' and don't really fit well with the rest of the sounds IMO. The piano is also great. The bass in the third one is awesome and sounds really good when it first comes in under the plucks, the drums also fit much better than in the first.

Greetings!
I joined this forum specifically to try and get some word about my project. I decided to get off my ass and actually start developing something good for once.
I'm currently working on a small project of mine called 'Lewis goes to Hollywood'. An 80's inspired album experimenting with synths, and a tad bit of rock.
I've worked the first track 'Hollywood Nights' upto a stage I'm happy to show other people, so let me know what you think!
I'd also like to add this is my first produced song ever using FL Studio.
Sorry In advance for Dropbox, I see you all use SoundCloud here!

Thanks!
I think the guitar in the intro is just a little messy like you said, and maybe the bass could stand out a little better. Other than that it's really good though, pretty much everything else about it is mixed nicely, and it doesn't get repetitive either.
This could be either a good thing or a bad thing to you, or you might not even care, but I thought I'd point out that at 2:12 anybody could sample the drums very easily. I wouldn't do that with anyone's music who uses this thread, or generally anybody that's even underground, but there's always people who keep an eye out for drums to sample.
Thanks many. And...Not a problem, as long as no one is stealing the whole song :P Still kinda mad at this part for the robot sounding hi hats.

Hey bud, welcome to the forums first and all! Secondly, you should read the OP (opening post) of the thread as stated by the name of this thread, we have a specific rule here where one is supposed to give feedback on the music of others. It doesn't have to be long, a few words on what you like/dislike about the track and maybe even a few words on how one can improve.
A minute in and now I'm a bit bored as it really hasn't made any effort to keep me interested, I'm actually almost growing tired of it by 1:30. It's good for 30 seconds or a minute but you've gotta keep pushing the song forward instead of letting it wallow in the faded glory of the first 30 seconds. Two minutes and I sincerely want to stop listening. Honestly as a musician I'd have at the very least have attempted to change the drum beat by 1:00 in or do something different. I've probably beaten it over the head a bit much now so hopefully you catch my drift. Cool sound, gets too repetitive too quickly.
Honestly I kind of thought the same thing too, as with most hip hop beats like this it doesn't work well past the first minute or so (unless you have someone rapping over it), but I've always been unsure of it I should keep going or keep them going, because you can get complaints from either side with something like that. Now I know though, so thanks. I'm glad it's at least decent in its concept.

Something about it has me thinking it would be the perfect background music for a part of a movie or game, where the main character is lost in a bad neighborhood and is trying to escape. Anyway, it's real atmospheric and suspenseful, I especially like the percussion for that reason. I don't like the guitar, or whatever it is, after 1:54. It adds to the dark, eerie sound the song has but I feel like it would have been better off in the background, with the pad as the main focus.

Not bad, but the drums are completely invisible. Try doing the Parallel Compression on them (aka. New York compression).
I did some work on the mix. Made the bass more juicy, fixed the quitars, and added a slight wah to the second guitar. Opinions?

To me it sounds like the guitar is completely outside the mix, the drums and bass lie together so perfectly, the rhythmic semi-acoustic guitar just doesn't fit in.
The electric guitar fits in pretty well, you should try and add some reverb to the drums and the bass, make it more roomy the way the guitar is. You can also use delay on the bass if you don't want it to get too muddy (or highpass the reverb send).
The drums are really nicely programmed, well done mate :)

Sausage of dist, you know I would probably dial back on the lead instrument (bass guitar with shitloads of dist?)
Let the track breathe, you can create the same effect if you add some compression on the lead instrument after you let the drums forward a bit.
This track sounds like it could use with the drums being more in the front! A trick I've learned that is pretty damn neat to make things pop out in tracks is to automate the volume on the track so that in parts that you could consider a chorus is at the normal volume (let's call it peak volume), while verse and bridges are lowered just 1 db. This is a subtle bu a very noticeable thing that can make shit pop out really well!

I really dig the groove on the track, it sounds like the lead instruments could probably have a highpass filter on them (you accomplish this effect by cutting all the bass on the track, anywhere 100-200hz is recommended, just give it a try and try and push it as high as possible on the frequency until the track sounds thin, then go back and find a spot where the bass is cut but it doesn't affect the sound so that it sounds hollow).
As for your singing, I don't know, it sounds like you don't have full breath support and as if you're singing from your throat and not your stomach. When you sang this track, how did it feel?
I started with the idea of making some drum&bass, I didn't want to use a sample for the drums so I started fiddling with some of my own, it turned out to become something more funk/jazzy.

Skeeter, first of all, thanks for the excellent advice.
I really dig the groove on the track, it sounds like the lead instruments could probably have a highpass filter on them
I actually do have a high pass filter on them, but I haven't experimented pushing them up much yet. You're probably hearing the stock boobass vst I'm using; it's not great and hits 100-200hz pretty hard. I didn't get around to swapping that one out yet.
As for your singing, I don't know, it sounds like you don't have full breath support and as if you're singing from your throat and not your stomach. When you sang this track, how did it feel?
You're probably right. I know what you're referring to and I tried to remedy it by sitting upright and breathing, but I was also distracted trying to get the levels right and articulating properly. I took several recordings for about an hour and it's hard to keep all these things in mind while singing! I'm going to keep working at it.
Could I get some more feedback?
I like the chord progression in the beginning, some tweaking of the velocity to match the way it builds up (maybe have it be strong in the beginning, calm down when the alternating notes come in, then build up again?)
I think that's the thing that I think of the most, how static the piano is. It would be really cool if you worked on those dynamics, the piano is a marvelous instrument for that!
I'm also a huge sucker for filters, maybe having a filter that lowpasses (or highpass? Experiment with either) it for quite some time until the pseudo-strings leave? :)
The cello sounds good, what vst do you use for it?
The track is pretty long without too much happening, things get added and I would say that going the opposite direction, stripping it down somewhere after half of it has passed could do a lot to make an already nice track even better! Do you have any plans for adding a strong melody on top on all this? I could see a few 3xoscs being used (one for low-end action, maybe let it follow the high-end melody?) for such a thing.

What do you mean in the way of filters? (very new to this)
I use orchestral essentials for that I think... not sure.
tbh this track the way it was was simply testing all of the individual parts I have for it already, I might add some vocals... idk.

A filter is a way of attenuating(decreasing) a certain range of frequencies in a mix. It's essentially a specialised EQ. Typically an instrument will have a high pass filter to remove frequencies below a certain frequency which interfere with other instruments you have in the song. Example - if you have a bass in the song and a high piano melody generally you would put a high pass filter on the piano, because piano notes typically bleed low frequencies everywhere which would interfere with your bass
[editline]21st September 2014[/editline]
Most programs have filters built in, or you could just put in a low cut on your EQ as opposed to a high pass filter
[editline]21st September 2014[/editline]
\in terms of your song, the high strings part that comes in at 1:29 could use a high pass filter
I would like some feedback on that song I posted too

I think it's a bit goofy with how much the lead and background parts contrast, while it's never a bad idea to try new things, my ears tell me that the lead parts are far too energetic and staccato to fit with the backgrounds soft swelling chords. I think it'd be a more cohesive piece if they were perhaps not only a dB or two quieter but also just less punchy in the mix, and I don't mean mix wise, but just less staccato and ...'hard' in general. As is the lead feels like it would fit better in something much more energetic, and vise versa for the chord parts.
It's a shame too, because the glitchy bits are very cool and I'd like to see them used somehow, some real unique effects in there.
