I actually wasn't talking about my songs, but thanks for the C&C. I rambled a lot about this because the thread is going so fucking well that I don't want to see it as it was a few months back. I hated coming to this thread for advice as almost always I had to move on with my songs as I waited for criticism. I am so proud of this thread now for how useful it is, that I really don't want to see it derailed. Sorry for the long speech again, and thanks for the c&C

I don't know that much about trance but the general formula I've heard before is to automate the cutoff on the lead so it gets all super-saw'y as it builds up, with white noise risers and the like, and then you have the snare roll on every 4, then 2, then 1 beat. It tends to drop with the cutoff more or less open with a slightly different progression on the lead along with a few cymbal crashes here and there

It's definitely useful to have something as guidance but don't just blindly follow it. Make it your own. What's the point in writing tunes that have been written a thousand times already, you know?

Do what is best for the song, cliches are cliche for a reason. You can always add/remove things to the cliche to make it more interesting or unique.

okay well for a start it's really good. Well produced, and mostly interesting. I would probably add more textures and more layers to the second run of your main thing, after the interlude you have. The variations in your guitar/string pluck thing is really good so no changes there or even to the piano. Maybe add a harmony/counterpoint to your backing string layer when the drums come back in, or even add a nice overarching melody to the whole thing.

The bass sounds way too dry, and the drums are way too low in the mix. Kinda boring progression too, but maybe that's part of the style as I dunno much about the genre.

Jazz version of teardrop by massive attack. Using the original vox as a placeholder but I'll record it with my singer at some point soon!

Interesting piece. I think it would be better if you add some variety in the chords. Also the background synth should be a bit louder as it sounds like that is where the melody is.

Even though you are going for a drone piece, you should still use dynamics in it. It got bland very fast as the variety was very limited. If you're only going to use drums and bass you have to keep the listener engaged and dynamics is one way of doing that. Another way is using harmony. There was no harmony in this piece it was just the bass soloing for 4 mins.

This version is better than your past versions. Although I believe I said it before and you're probably aware, but that progression that you are using is used a lot in other songs. But taking that fact away, its a good piece.

It sort of reminds me of something the norweigan band Katzenjammer could make, in fact I think you should get in touch with them, because this shit would rock with them jamming it out with some of their unique vocals.

I think you could make it work with the faster version too, with some minor tweaks on how long each chord is struck and where the melody is played too.

I like this song, although something is missing in it. It feels like the song wants to be happy, but something is keeping it back. I don't have the greatest ear when it comes to hearing the theory sorry I can't elaborate more.

No worries mate, I feel there's something lacking too, I ~think~ it could be that it is pretty much the same through the whole song even with the small sticks in the first part of the song, and without any actual sweeps and buildups. The whole chord progression could probably add in as well, it goes in Dmajor with the progression I, III, VI, V, which I think isn't a particulary happy progression given the overall happy feel of the melody and synths chosen.

I think your song would be really cool with more instruments such as bass and drums, because the solo itself (and the soundscape you've created) is really cool and I think it could be a really sweet track if it was more fleshed out. :)

The outro with acoustic guitar and vocals (is that you?) sounds very eddie vedder, I like it a lot! You should definietly explore that aspect more!

This is pretty damn chill! The bass sounds like it could use more clarity (is it a detuned synth? It sounds a bit atonal), you could push the kick more forward in the mix as well if there is one, I honestly can't tell since it seems to be non-existant.

I really like the guitar tone you have, and the shaker works really well!
Something I would consider is bringing the piano forward a bit, it is the 'voice' of the track after all.
Excellent percussion all around, tightly mixed in :) It is a very dry track right now, I think adding a splash of reverb on drums & piano and some delay on the guitar could add a lot!

I really dig how you've made it so fresh and open even with the extremely heavy bass drum! There's so much stuff going on in the background as well, the synth that lays down the basic rhythm (best heard at the 2 minute mark) is bloody gorgeous! How did you do it?
You could definietly make this one longer, the 2minutemark break really makes me anxious to hear more of the main part!

As mentioned by others, a distorted guitar would push this one into the outer stratosphere, because by god is it a cool bass riff!
Maybe letting the drums come forward a bit more, and with a LOT of dirt on them (compression, even distortion and touch of reverb) could make this one a really nasty track.

Heck, you could probably doubletrack the bass and cut everything below 400hz on that doubletracked one, and add some really dirty distortion to it to function as the 'guitar'.

I think pushing down the bpm on the track by 10-15 bpm could make the vocals fit more, right now it feels a bit stressed.

The overall composition is really beautiful though, very, VERY nice job!
The airy pad that sounds like strings makes it soothing as fuck, and the piano is just. Wow, you could probably make a whole track with just the piano! :)

This one sounds good until you crank it up, then it becomes really harsh ; you should check into cutting some of the 3-5khz on the guitar ; That should bring forth the snare a bit too, and make it enjoyable on louder volumes.

I like that the snare is so ringy too, its a shame it is so much in the background (the kick is actually nice and decent, the overhead should be more forward in the mix though).

Do you have a vocalist to scream his heart out for this track?
I'm thinking a vocalist sounding like Dennis Lyxzén could make this a real headbanger, the guitarplaying is solid as granite!
