this is the first time i've made anything that isn't intentionally lofi. took a lot of inspiration from the beach boys, tame impala, the doors, and qotsa with this.

doing most of this for fun, not really sticking to anything until i can actually mix things properly.
THIS IS GOOD. I LOVE IT.
Now get a singer.

Reminds me a lot of Knife Party's Bonfire. Sounds awesome though.

My 2 biggest inspirations for the track were Bonfire and Nuclear (Hands Up). I have a major fetish for Drumstep plucks for some reason.

You nailed it completely. Also, on your percussion variations, your last track was awesome, I felt it very house-y. You could really try towards that gender.

I need some feedback on this track; It's for a remix competition.

try adding some percussion to it, try to work in some other samples. at the moment it just sounds like you pitch shifted and cut up crescendolls (which you pretty much did lol)

Nice, I like. I'm always a sucker for 'broken' music.
That burst of white noise at the end was kinda piercing to my ears though.
Have you tried recording stuff to actual VHS and sampling it from there? I've hooked up a VCR before to sample some old Winnie the Pooh cartoons and some random other stuff I found laying around in boxes in our attic.
On the same note: in the most recent track I've been working on I've recorded my Virus C to a cassette deck for most of the synths:

That "More fun, with plastic" actually came from a VHS tape. Sadly the super deep Carl Sagan quote at the end comes from a digital source, since I don't have anything of Sagan on VHS :(
Also, the drums are chopped and layered from breaks I've sampled from vinyl.

i started playing this on piano
and i recognize it from some song can somebody tell me where the fuck it's from? i think it's either some rock/pop or from a film soundtrack
edit:
i moved it down a key and it sounds a lot more familar

this shit rocks YO
very boc-esque
Thanks! I do take inspiration from boc yes :)
A friend and I will start a project for school in a few weeks in which we'll try to use as much old/analog equipment as we can. Between the two of us we have two tape decks, two cassette decks, a boatload of vinyl, and we'll be borrowing analog EQ's and compressors from a friend.
It's going to be a concept-album of sorts, but we haven't yet decided on what it'll be. Sound/atmosphere wise it will probably be similar to this.
extra something

This is one of my favourite things in this thread
how do you do this do you record your final master onto the cassette deck or what
the phasing makes it sound a lot like boc haha

Thanks bro , glad you like it! :)
I recorded the individual synthlines onto a cassette deck that I had hooked up to either my Virus C or to my interface. Then I simply plugged the cassette deck's output into the inputs of my interface and recorded it back off of the tape :v:.
Also, keep in mind that the dry results off of the cassette sounded kinda dull, so there's also some eq'ing plus reverb/phasing/flanging going on.
I tried recording the 'master' of an older track I did directly onto tape, but that just sounded bad IMO (extreme distortion etc.).
I want to record it onto my tape deck eventually, but I have to clean that thing up first. It doesn't matter whether I set it to record in mono or stereo at the moment , it'll always record in mono for some reason.
well mono is more useful if you're recording direct into your interface
Awesome, I have a tape deck on my stereo and I've been looking at using it. I'll have to figure this out I think, kinda want to do the VHS thing as well
Yes, go for it!
It's so much fun mangling and destroying sound with analog equipment.
Edit:
Also, if you have a vinyl player, try finding some records that have like a 10/15 sec part of silence and sample that for vinyl crackles.
I've found that looping that and sidechaining it to drums or other stuff can give a pretty cool grainy sound to some elements of your track. (plus vinyl crackles with some reverb is just the best sounding thing ever imo)

Was really inspired by the music in that video so I came up with this:

i do all of my stuff with cassette tape but the thing about cassette tape is that you can get really great recording quality from it as long as you know what you are doing
that said here are two demos i recorded on my cassette recorder a long time ago (that cassette recorder died recently rip):

I did an ambient type piece. Not sure if it's done or not.

That was a very interesting piece. I really like the repetition with the synthesizer for the first half, and how it dies out in a transition for the other half. The only problem I have with the piece is the lack of ambient sounds. I feel like there is one distinct sound and not enough things going on in the background to keep my fully interested in the piece.
Really cool overall though.
I haven't posted music here for a long time, so here's something I wrote last October. It's a one movement string quartet work - 'Expansion'

I'm not looking for any feedback, though you're welcome to give some if you'd like. I just wanted to post some music that's different from the other stuff in this thread. I learn a lot from listening to different, new music every day (including your guys' stuff) so I figured I'd give back.

Wow! This reminds me of Download (check out Furnace). I really dig the 808 weirdness in the last part. Dem rimshots!
So what's the deal with cassettes because I've really wanted to use them for ages but I'm a pleb with no money
now I have a job so I want to get a recorder and some blank tapes. What equipment would i need for this because at the moment I'm using a USB interface and a midi keyboard and i have a feeling these don't interact well with cassette recorders
Someone should write an info thread or something that would be fun, and sampling from vinyl and stuff
depends on what u wants to do m8
if you just want to run it through a cassette deck and back all you need to do really is just output the audio from your computer into your cassette deck, record it, and then record the output of the cassette back into the computer.
if you want to sample a record from vinyl you need to have a preamp first because the record player wont have the same impedance as your interface

i personally use stuff like:

and i dont use the computer to record, i record my shit straight onto that and master it there really, thats what i did those two demos with
